Federer Revelations

I'm not a fan of federer. to me, he's shown dislikable traits. he is a great champion, of the greatest displaying some of the best tennis the world has seen, all the while maintaining a cool composure. while it's admirable in modern tennis to display a stoic control of one's demeanor, an homage to past greats, federer has been guilty of being too composed, to the point where he at times seemed detached or docile. however, there was a fire in federer last night.

despite murray showing he was the better, more prepared player, federer showed the fight, looking like an underdog who many believed would lose forcing himself not to get discouraged, forcing himself to believe, instead of realizing he's fallen short and not making a push as he's done before. if there was a part of his game that failed him last night, and there were multiple parts, it wasn't the mental aspect. murray was in the f1, while federer was in the f2, but federer forced himself to believe he was still the better driver.

his game looks different now than it did 5 years ago. it looks different now than it did last year. while the semi-final showed how much slower federer actually is, and how much his game has degenerated, it's great to see that his passion for the sport, and for winning, is alive and well once again and will seemingly be the last thing to leave him.

Everybody is going to get old, you know? Even Murray and Djokovic who are both heading for 26. It'll be interesting to see what they can offer when they lose that little bit of speed and reflexes like all players do.
And also, Murray still is 16 Slams away from catching Federer and also 302 weeks from surpassing Federer at #1.

You mean that 1/2 step that Federer is slower than he was? He just played a 5 setter the match before and the commentators even said how he looked a little more sluggish after the Tsonga match than the matches leading up to it.

Also, the more important thing is, if you weren't watching, was Murray's ability to play a much more offensive game than he used to play...the commentators also mentioned this as well. Murray was hitting harder and dictating more than I've ever seen him do against Fed. Murray was serving out of his mind and he was able to keep the ball to Fed's BH. This was his game plan and it worked.

yep Murray had his best performance. Now he needs to elevate it even more for the next match...if that's possible since we know that Djokovic isn't going to be slicing back weak 2nd serves.

yep murray was relentless in his approach last night. served big all match. apart from federer, he was the biggest reason why federer couldn't string games together. i think murray found his reset button. he doesnt fart mentally anymore. i found the roll reversal odd especially in the beginning.

having said this, federer showed a sense of urgency and a desire to win we dont normally see from him.

their declines would probably be steeper than federer's that's for sure.
