Federer/Roddick most-viewed men's final in 10 years

NEW YORK (AP)—Roger Federer and Andy Roddick’s epic Wimbledon final last Sunday was the most-viewed men’s final at the All England Club in 10 years.

NBC said Thursday that an average of 5.71 million people tuned in to watch Federer win his record-setting 15th Grand Slam title. The number was the highest since Pete Sampras beat Andre Agassi in the 1999 final, attracting 5.85 million viewers.

The 3.8 rating and 10 share was the best for a men’s final since Sampras defeated Patrick Rafter in 2000, and surpassed last year’s classic between Federer and Rafael Nadal by 9 percent.

Federer beat Roddick 5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), 3-6, 16-14 in a match that lasted 4 hours, 16 minutes. The fifth set was the longest in major final history.

It's nice to see that we're not the only people who watch tennis.

So the FO final is the most watched FO final in years and now this?

Well, I think you can put any claims Federer isn't attracting viewers to rest now.

Nah people were hoping Soderling and Roddick would stop him equaling and breaking Pete Sampras' record. :)

+1

Although I'm sure Roddick in the final wooed a lot of Americans, so it wasn't entirely due to Roger.

In the UK, the final had an average of 7.5 million viewers... Is it not really surprising the UK had more viewers than the USA? I mean... the population difference is massive, is it not?

last year was federer vs nadal and there was only about 75% as many viewers

in europe roddick is huge, not murray huge but well liked especially in england
The crowd was on Roddick's side during the final, and they gave him tremendous appreciation after it ended.

Last year's finals numbers were certainly impacted by the rain delays. Casual fans couldn't possibly be expected to keep watching. I recorded it and went to play some tennis during one of the rain delays, and I caught up to the live broadcast during another rain delay.

It was to see Roger beat the record. I highly doubt it was to see a Fed-Roddick match itself since we already know the outcome beforehand with these two

it was all about roddick's run. so it was either people wanting to see history, or people believing roddick was legit. turns out both groups were correct, hence the ratings

yaa everyone knew fed would win in 3 easy sets?

Fed won as always..

Whats the h2h? 55000-2? LOL

Most of their meetings are the same.. Roddick may make a big a run in the mach but we know he wouldnt convert when he needed to. Thats what usually happens when Roddick plays Fed. IT happened at the USO a few years ago, happened at Wimbeldon a few years ago.. Happened again this year at Wimbeldon

Not really. Federer cruised to a fourth set victory. It wasn't 16-14 in the fifth set.

Its proof that people were just tuned in to see Fed break the record. Thats all. Fed and Roddick matches never drew THAT BIG in all the times they played against each other in the slams.

Who cares to see Roddick the one slam wonder go up against his master?

i know many people who thoroughly enjoyed this final more so than last years, who aren't fans of federer.

I dont have the stats but im sure last years had far more & longer rallies. Mcenroe and a few other pro's said it was the best game they had ever seen. I havent heard any players saying the same about this years final.

People have their own opinions though; they shouldn't just agree blindly with McEnroe etc.

Last years final, I think was the better match. However, I certainly felt happier after this year's match, as I'm a Fed fan. I still appreciate the quality of tennis last year though (but Fed had a HUGE amount of errors which are always left out in the highlight reels).

Hell they got into better ralleys then Roger and Roddick and both Goran and Pete were better serve-volleying

sure buddy. keep telling yourself that. i especially loved those two shot rallies - serve & volley.

freaking hilarious that a player who is supposed to be so formidable on grass - goran gets bageled. incredible competition for pete sampras!!!!!!

I seem to remember Goran blowing A-Fraud off the court at Wimbeldon..

Goran was more competition on grass, than Roddick ever was.

Goran is the superior grass courter to Roddick.. Anyone who says otherwise is full of it

lol, you never fail to amuse me with your posts of roddick hatred

roddick is awesome on grass and great on HCs, kinda blows on clay but so did pete. why do you hate someone so much?

you act like roddicks draw at wimbledon this year was a total joke, he beat out GOOD players fair and square

I have to say last years final probably has a lot to do with this. Last yrs final got a lot of peoples attention and so they made sure to tune in this year in case it was another classic, which it kind of was

If everyone already knew the outcome, nobody would have watched.

How many people watched the Sampras vs. Pioline final?

Anyone who considers this years final to be better than last years as a spectacle worships at the church of fed.
According to the ATP Tour website (and who visits the ATP Tour website other than diehard tennis fans, as casual fans sure don't), almost TWICE as many people thought this year's Federer-Roddick final was BETTER than last year's Nadal-Federer final.

http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Player-Landing.aspx

Let's face it, a lot of people can't stand watching Nadal play.

And why do longer rallies make for a better final?

I like to see winners and there were 181 winners between Federer and Roddick in this year's final. :)

I am wondering what that 5.71 mill represents. A lot of people on this board were watching livestreams giving me the impression that the WO (and FO final) were not telecast in the US live.

There would definitely have been a few million watching in India alone.
Is it the number of TV sets on, or have they assumed some number of people per TV set ?

Not sure.... but im sure the ammount of people on livestreams were probably at the most 10 000.... not enought to chance the 5.71... also in places like Canada, we have NBC broadcasting it, as well as out sports channel TSN, using a NBC feed, not sure how that works
