Federer Shanghai Uniqlo 2019

Feel meh about this red one. All I care for is that Cinci kit. Loved it. So far that and Nishi's FO kit top my favorite list. I have Nishikori's full set, was fortunate enough to get everything in time (and in the right size). But anyway, hope we can see some sort of a comeback for the Cinci 2019 kit. It was fantastic I think.

It’s interesting how different the designs are from Novak to Roger. Obviously Christophe Lemaire was not doing Novak’s so that explains it. But ND was much sportier and RF’s are often like wardrobe essentials/basics spun as tennis gear.

I thought you couldn't go wrong with a red Shanghai outfit.
I was wrong.

It's just so boring. Uniqlo did so much better for Djokovic over the years in Shanghai.

Compare it to this:

It's no contest. Uniqlo needs Djokovic's designer back, and they need better marketing.

And Djokovic’s body that was a perfect fit for their outfit

I bought one of Federer outfits and the fit is totally different from Novaks (slim and perfect close to body fit)
Probably just that roger prefers that looser fit. I’m sure Uniqlo have no issue with getting their tape measures out on the guy they’re spending 300million on.

Agree that in the Djokovic era Uniqlo's clothes were tailored to emphasise Djoker's whippet like physique, and the designs, although, as others have pointed out, often somewhat resembled Nike designs, were nonetheless far superior to the plastic press studded 'pyjamas' Fed is now sporting. The fact that Nishikori's gear remains consistently better than Fed's is also intriguing; it suggests Uniqlo could do better with Fed's gear if they wanted to.

One thing I don't see mentioned often is that the design choices might be heavily influenced by Fed so the reason the outfits don't look more like Novak could be because of how Roger himself prefers them to look.

Yes and Federer himself has referenced having more input to the designs / keeping them far more simple in various press conferences

joker busy making butt ugly crock stuff these days. at much less than 30. mil a year i’m told

Funnily enough, I agree that Lacoste is putting their best designs on someone else from their sponsored athletes and not on Djokovic. I think that their last excellent effort with Djokovic was this:

Other than that someone else is wearing their best designs like for example Meddy here (that polo shirt is even better looking in person):

I saw a teenager wore this jacket at a USTA tournament last saturday and I asked him where he bought it. He said he doesn't know. His father got it for him. I've been trying to buy one but no luck so far :(. I would buy this Uniqlo jacket over Nike any days

I think i know his son because his father is my good friend. Someone printed that logo professionally. You have to ask his father or want me to give you the professional printer’s contact detail.

It’s heat transfer material but now it can be permanently inked since there is new material which is called heat transfer ink.

I saw that kid again this past Saturday with his father at the tournament and I asked his father where he got the jacket because I would like to get one for my son. The father is a very nice guy and he gave my son the same jacket that his son wears but different color with the RF logo on the sleeve. It is a beautiful jacket. He gave the jacket to my son for FREE. I tried to give his kid $200 but his kid didn't accept it.

@kimguroo ... do you know how to print the logo?

Give Uniqlo the break, it was alway said that Federer's outfits are done according to his wishes. The guy obviously have an idea what he wants to wear. All those horrible collars were already quite prominent in his Nike outfits. The guy has no taste, in the end Swiss have no fashion sense whatsoever.

Can you point me at three examples of retro done right in recent iterations the way Uniqlo did it with Fed's RG outfit?

Thanks.

My point is that one shouldn't blame Uniqlo for giving Fedr exactly what he wants from them. Ugly collars and ridiculous pyjamas he's wearing are his own fault, but again it was exactly like that during his Nike days. And he knows better because he's friend with Anna Wintour, you know.

I got your point the first time. What I am hinting at is that Federer's outfits while not the best out there, are far from bad, and some are exceptionally good. That is why I asked you to point at some "modern retro" outfits done right according to you, as I am interested in what you consider successful.

I despise the AW connection as much as the next guy, and I also know that Federer is not exactly a style behemoth, as seen by his atrocious suits and dress shoes, but the conservative part of his taste is nothing to be ashamed of, and that one shines through most of his current outfits (whether he is instrumental in designing them I don't know, but I really doubt it. The most I envisage him doing is picking colours (which for the most part are very successful in his Uniqlo lines) or being asked which detail he likes more. I don't see him being involved in "designing" his outfits).

this was Fed’s best red kit by far

world-no1-roger-federer-of-switzerland-competes-against-nikolay-davydenko-of-russia-during-a-match-of-the-tennis-masters-cup-shanghai-2007-in-shangha-W9HCDE.jpg

No, that was Nike's best red kit by far (as, the best platform for putting the swoosh as the most visible part of the outfit). On the face of it, it is just two plain items with nothing special in them ( a criticism that is widely spread towards his Uniqlo kits nowadays, despite of them being more than just a plain colour with a logo).

Australian Alpina always have very nice, decent archive collections, Ellesse retro styles look good although horrible quality wise lately, and Joma makes good retro polos.

I looked briefly on the websites of all three. There was exactly one item that was semi-decent, and, IMO, it was nowhere near what Uniqlo did with their RG effort.

I suppose tastes are different. I like Nishi's Uniqlo outfits and have couple of items, but I would never buy anything from RF's Uniqlo collection.

Got the outfit for a friend. Haven't bought uniqlo RF since '18 Wimbledon, but I've noticed that Shanghai shorts are looser than older ND/NK models where I could go with both S and M. Can't comment on fit of the polo, but I like how the piping is also this brownish colour of the shorts. Shame they didn't go with darker shade of red though (like the pipings from RG).

more fashion tips from the fashion police. somehow the kits are selling and blow away what he would have been wearing had he stayed with nike. back to your 70’s bell bottoms and mac gear

Uniqlo signing Federer was probably just a vanity purchase for the owner. If I had billions of dollars and a massive clothing company I would sign him too, just because I'm a huge fan.

From Federer's point of view, he probably misses all the cool sneakers and gear that he had as a Nike athlete (yes I know he still wears Nike shoes but it's just not the same), but it's hard to say no to $300mill. In his heart of hearts he probably thinks Uniqlo is a bit naff compared to Nike but he'll live with it to become the worlds first billionaire tennis player.

Uniqlo is a disgrace to Federerer’s unblemished legacy.

A dark stain. The immortal Nike kit pics that have been posted in defiance secure the claim.

Killing off the Nike RF legacy was beyond fail.

Uniqlo will never attain Epic Tennis Style Immortality status of the Borg Fila kits, the McEnroe Sergio Tacchini kits or the Nike RF kits.

I don't think that it was. He is actively promoting Uniqlo gear, and that goes against the laissez-faire type of attitude typical for such extravagant whims (and no, no one who thought about satisfying his ego in such a way, would start thinking about how to offset such costs. Not someone who can spent 300 mil dollars on such a whim).

From what I have seen Federer now wears sports shoes other than Nikes off the court, so he must not be missing the "cool sneakers" as he is in no official relationship with the company the products of which he wears (ON), so he can pick and choose whatever he wants, yet he wears something else. I appreciate the effort to speak about what is within Federer's "heart", but I will take that statement with a grain of salt, seeing that it is coming from a shoe collector to whom Nike is probably the best company (for his personal satisfaction too) as far as image is concerned. Playing the "money takes care of all" card as an explanation is a bit rich to throw in the allegiances arena. Federer didn't become Nike athlete because he thought highly of their products, but because they offered him the most money. It is the same deal with Uniqlo, so how in one case allegiances are "the heart of hearts" matter and in the other simply a matter of money is quite the curious leap of logic.

And yet he continues to wear them on court despite not being sponsored by them. Isn't this the biggest, most convincing endorsement an elite athlete can ever make? He actually chooses to wear Nike shoes without a deal! That means so much more than wearing a brand because they give you 300 million dollars to do so. Nike must be loving this.

Please, provide proof of the bolded in the first sentence , and in general that he doesn't have a shoe contract for on court shoes with Nike.

If you can't that means that you are speculating for the purpose of picturing Nike in one particular light.

Not remotely getting into this echo chamber of a conversation, but to be fair, Federer was definitely quoted about being happy to wear nike at Halle when he was out of contract pre-Wimbledon/Uniqlo. Something along the lines of being supportive throughout his career, so no problem wearing out of contract etc

I don't mind a reasonable conversation either: as far as I understand, at the time there were negotiations going on, so showing a good will between negotiating partners is usually what happens when both sides have an interest in reaching some sort of agreement and especially after being together for so long. However, it needs to be stated that there is no information that he "was out of contract". He was obviously trying to negotiate a new long term contract. That doesn't mean that he didn't have a contract that covers the then current situation (even if it was on a tournament to tournament basis). That would be very odd practice in the today's business world. Obviously, my personal opinion is that it is unthinkable for a player of such a profile to do any sort of free advertising as the suggestion that he plays without a contract (and by extension payment) speculates.

My (totally unfounded) theory on why Nishi's gear has been superior is thay have been working with him for quite a bit longer, so they know the cuts and blocking patterns that work for him. And there may be a much freer and qualitative work flow with less micro management of the design process when working with team Nishi that results in more dynamic designs.

Definitely true. The GOAT deserves his Nike RF line which is on a level with Borg Bj and the Mac red/white/blue. Anything else is just................laundry.

From a marketing perspective, i think the play that Uniqlo is running is, of all the fans that watch Federer, very few, are really likely to play tennis (certainly not seriously). But, they can't help but take notice of the logo on the clothes

If they go and check out that logo at all, but visiting the website, they will find great clothes at a reasonable price.

Also, Fed actually wears Uniqlo when he is in the press conferences as well as when he is doing anything for publicity. And it is regular Uniqlo clothes when he is out and about. So, in fact, if Uniqlo can get fans to buy regular Uniqlo clothes (which are all mostly logo less) then they won big time. And, if Fed is willing to wear it out and about, then it lifts the brand (even if they know he is being paid).

Anyway, my two cents.
