Federer should retire when he wishes. Some players like to retire when they lose the top at a not so old age like Borg or some like to keep hanging around even when they are struggling to remain in the top 50 and their body can't cope with the intensity anymore.

I'm not saying he should but some players retire when they still have some good years left and some hang on forever.

They hang on because get more money, fame and fun than you do. They're not just videogame characters you write about on this board.

Reconsider you perspective of life, friend.

Making the choice to retire is obviously hard after playing on the tour so many years, it's your entire life and then to leave is very hard, look at Agassi and everyone else. But there is a point where you cannot compete anymore without hurting yourself and have to accept that and retire.

Some player dropped their ranking because of injuries but come rolling back after they get their health back.... just look at Justine Henin, Serena, Venus, Lindsay, Hingis, Agassi and Sampras.

Fed is healthy even when he's ranking dropped - it really up for him to decide and not speculate on behalf of him. You cannot underestimate the character of a champion- they have that drive the takes them to the top.

Yeah man, playing tennis and "hurting yourself" is almost as hard as someone working in a factory for a few bucks who doesn't know when to retire because he can't compete with younger workers.

Poor Agassi.

yes federer should retire because he just lost the semis to djoko, if he can't win every single match he should retire, if he can't be perfect why bother playing right, come on people give me a break.....

No, no, I think they're actually (and involuntarily) funny.

You know:

-Federer is an arrogant gay b**ch who should retire.
-Nadal is an unsportive and drug-addict OCD patient.
-Roddick is a pathetic handiccaped ball-throwing machine.
-Nalbandian is an ugly fat buffalo-eater.
-Moya? Ok, kind of kewl but, did he win a challenger or what?
-Ljubicic... who?
-Sharapova is an alien monster who will destroy the planet shrieking.
-Ana Ivanovic, ok, she's kinda cute, but she's cheating making noise with her feet and celebrates opponent's errors with strange and scaring gipsy Serbian curses.
-Henin-Ardenne, she's not hot so you know, who cares if she can play?
-Serena, whooah man, she's huge, I mean huuuge.
-Ah, and Safin is God and get more and more goddish as he wins less and less tournaments.

And:

-If you lose a match, you should retire.
-If you lose two matches, you are embarrassing the whole human kind.
-If you lose three matches, you are responsible for hunger in Africa.
-If you beat Federer, you are better than Fed who was better than Sampras who was better than McEnroe who was better than Borg who was better than Laver and if you follow that line, you are actually better than Jesus.
-But if you beat Safin that proves nothing because he didn't sleep because spent the night with five brunette French and Italian and Spanish girls and twenty blonde Russian girls in a jacuzzi and, man, a match is just a match, not that important after all.

Hey, you can't say this board has not its load of entertainment! I really have fun reading it.

LMAO,best post I've read since I joined this forum.Bravo!

the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Fedalovic will retire in exactly 5 years from now with totals of 21, 22 and 19 slams respectively for fed nadal and djokovic

The premise of this thread is interesting though. I think a lot of it depends on how strong the top 5 players are. Assuming Djokovic or Nadal are still top 5 the next 3 years I don't think them as aging guys as well would really scare Fed. They aren't going to be dominating anything. The real question is if someone emerges and really looks like the next big thing like Tsitsipas or whoever and takes the sport over. If it's just so so guys and some hanger arounds like Djokovic he's still a threat to win majors even if he were to drop to 30 IMO. Pre big 3 era players out of of the top 15 won fairly often. Ivanisevic won Wimbledon as a wildcard ranked in the 100's so we know Fed will be a threat there until he is probably 40 something if he really wanted to play it.

I really wish people wouldn't resurrect threads that are years old. Started reading this thread and it took me a while to notice that the posts I was reading were posted 11 years ago! Just start a new thread for god sake.
