Federer showed some mental toughness in his first rounder.

IMO, Fed had probably the toughest first round match any top 10 player could have. He was playing a tricky and dangerous opponent, who, although streaky, could do some serious damage.

Even though the scorline wasnt showing a beatdown, i felt that Federer showed some great mental toughness in this match.

For example:

He was up in the first set, then somehow loses it. Instead of being frustrated, he works harder, changes his strategy around, and wins the second.

I think that Federer knew that, depsite the shots Igor was pulling off with his forehand, Andreev would get tired. Federer didnt get to angry at himself, even though his game was off.

In the third, Fed goes down a break, breaks back, goes up a break, gets broken, saves 3 SP's and then wins the set 7-2 in a breaker.

The saving 3 set points really makes the cake for me in this match.

He bagels andreev in the 4th.

I feel that, in all honesty, despite blowing leads in the third and first sets, Fed had a good match. His backhand was a bit off, but he showed some grit and determination, and pulled out a tricky first rounder.

I think he'll get to the semi's without a doubt, its a question of whether his game is on to bring down Djokovic.

Note: I know that blowing leads is not considered mentally tough, but look at it from the persepective of playing bad tennis, and managing to win.

To be honset there was some major choking by Andreev as well, but yeah Fed showed mental toughness and clearly had the toughest 1st round of the top players.

Mental toughness yes, but also quite a few 'brainfarts', handing back a few clear leads in all of the sets. And if Andreev wouldn't have had that massive choke at the end of the 3rd set... brrrr!
I do agree that he had by far the toughest opponent in his 1st round, not just the highest non-seeded player, but also one that gave him quite a few tough matches in the past. Well hopefully it gave him a proper wake-up call.

I have a feeling there's more trouble on the way for fed

his majors wont get any easier.

but dont get your hopes up for him losing in the early rounds.

the quarters is seriously the only threatening match i see for him until he reaches the semi's.

Isn't that what we said at the US open against hewitt, look what happened he dropped the first set. What about FO last year 2 sets down against Haas. Also dropping sets to acusaso and PHM.

I'm starting to feel his time is running short. He was dodging bullets right and left in 09. What's left for this year? Hoping he proves me wrong.

Well to be fair to Federer he has been ranked 1 or 2 EVERY week since the end of 2003, he cant stay on top forever, I honestly think he could stay in the top 3 up until the olympics, I really do.

I do think his motivation will drop a lot after that.

But as long as he is playing I will always watch.

Let's give credit where it is due.

Yes, Federer definitely showed some mental toughness against Andreev. Sometimes, you have to, as we say in the US, give your opponent "just enough rope to hang himself with". That's what he did, in my opinion. He picked his spots nicely on a day when he was not playing at or near his VERY BEST. He was also a little fortunate, because if he went down 2 sets to 1, anything was possible, because Andreev would have seen the finish line, and a 5 set win would have been quite difficult for RF. Anyway, the match may serve him well later in the Tourney, but we'll see it play out. It should be fascinating. It's pretty wide open, as Murray, Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal all look to be in good if not GREAT form. Meanwhile, Del Potro lurks, and if he can fight through his wrist pain, he could be VERY dangerous, as usual these days.

Yes, Federer showed mental toughness here. I'm surprised none of the doubters have jumped in with the standard and ridiculous, "he just got lucky and his opponent out-choked him" line.

Well as is most usual, both sides of the fence have some good points. Feds indeed showed some toughness, but there's no possible denial that Andreev did quite a bit of choking as well.

Well, you don't win 15 Grand Slams and make 22 consecutive semifinals without weathering a few difficult situations here and there no matter how talented you are.
So anyone who doubts his mental toughness is honestly talking out of his rear end...

True, but Federer also didn't capitalize on a few chances to put the third set away.

It isn't like Andreev didn't get lucky a few times as well.

That will happen throughout a match.
