I don't see Federer as a grass court specialist at all. Sure he is a great player. Note I didn't say on any particular surface. In his prime he was great on virtually every surface he was just not quite good enough on Clay to win the French. Now he is past his prime and on a decline. The fact that he really only has a chance to win the USO out of the majors says that he is not a grass court specialist. For this clown of an OP that seems to want to point to score lines from matches to attempt to validate his points, score lines really mean nothing other than a win or loss. There are too many variables in a given match to have the specific scores mean anything else. Also Mr. Maestro you were getting beat up in another forum by people that didn't agree with you and made you look a fool so now you decided to start a whole thread that will be dedicated to making you look a fool. Wow, some people are just gluttin for punishment.

"Yeah, but not quite up there with Sampras "

This would seem to the logical choice, largely due to the "up there" factor would be competition; in Sampras' era, more true grass competition (amongst a few flukes like Courier) existed, as opposed to the kind of players Federer faced while dominating.

Yes but that "all courts" are pretty much same, more or less. Look at top 4 players. They are all doing generally well on all courts.

This poll is hard to choose, mainly because Sampras' name is there. The grass Sampras played is very diffrent from the grass Federer/Nadal dominate right now.

In away, the real "grass" court specialty has died around 2001-2003 when Wimbledon hardened the ground underneath the grass layer.

Yes, I agree that all the top 4 are similar in style. Since the surfaces have slowed down especially AO open and Wimbldon, and now all surfaces are not that different from each other, a player who can win at AO open can also win at Wimbldon. I think the slower grass has helped Federer but I think he would have won multiple Wimbledon titles even if the grass remained unchanged since 2001. The reason for that is Federer has a pretty good Serve and he used to volley well under Roche in 2003. Since they changed the grass, Federer had to change his game as well. The only guy who could have troubled Federer might have been Roddick.

Nah. Fed is more like a fast court specialist. Besides he won all of his Wimbledons on the slower grass of the post 2001 era.... After 2001 grass became slower than it was before..... Nothing like it was in the 1990s....

no
he is much better on hard court
however he plays well on all the surfaces so its stupid to call him a "surface specialist"
