Federer the Iron Man of Tennis...

The durability of Fed is just incredible.

I don't think it is a good idea for players to do this, but I think all of us can think of at least 5-6 matches we've seen Roger play out, where he probably should have retired. But he kept going, maybe because he wanted to do it for the crowd, or respect to the opponent, a point of pride, or a mixture of all those things. I'm not sure how or why but it's fascinating that he's been able to keep that streak going.
I think he mentioned in 2013 that he played when he shouldn't have and made his year worse. Of course, if he knows beforehand then he can just not show. But for some reason, he had been very hesitant to do that. Seemed like 2016 was like that too?

Even the no-shows / pullouts are quite rare in Fed's case. The highest profile one for me is when he had to withdraw from the WTF title match.

Have you read any interviews where he has specifically mentioned wanting to retire from a match, but continuing regardless? I think part of his process in never retiring would be to not talk about specific examples, but maybe he has.

Nalbandian 2005 WTF (ankle)
The thought crossed his mind, but Federer kept going before ultimately losing in the 5th. Once had a heatstroke vs Davydenko. Kept going and won the match. Felt better afterwards. He was never truly close to retiring in either though.

I want fed to go out like iron man in the avengers:
Novak: I am inevitable!
Roger : And I....am Roger Federer! #closes out his last slam win with an ace on championship point and retires#

He had his chance to do it...

He had his chance to do it...

But the odds of him retiring if he'd converted that one.... No way will that be the way Fed ends it. I can't see him retiring if he can still win slams. It's not like he's Sampras, who was losing to literal nobodies consistently in the last couple of years and only finding his form once in a while.
