Federer throwing tennis ball [video]

Skip to 1:10. This is the first time I've seen Roger throw a ball.

Elbow up and sticks out to the left.
@TimeToPlaySets Do you see how similar his serve motion and his throwing motion are? Does this video convince you that serving and throwing are identical and that serving is nothing but throwing the racquet to the ball?

^^^ dead on. And he's even throwing it up into the sky.

Nice find, thanks for posting.

He goes through a similar motion to stretch muscles. With the upward throw like the Pat Dougherty video, I wonder if he uses it to practice the serve?

Very similar throwing actions but not identical. Throwing a racket (at a ball), throwing an ax, throwing a tomahawk, etc will be a bit different from throwing a ball. Even if we throw those things upward at the same steep angle. I throw balls easily with my right arm but not with my left. However, my lefty serve is significantly superior to my righty serve. Now, while lefty ball throwing feels very awkward for me, throwing a racket left-handed is much better. I have seen the same issue with some students and other players.

If the actions were identical, then I should have no problem throwing a ball left-handed. But this is not the case.

Not bad but could be better.
He doesn't look at the ball.
Too little knee bend.
Opens hand too early, extends the wrist too much.
Minimal upper body rotation.
Not committed to the shot, too casual.
But nice motion, I wouldn't change much. Better than 97% of posters here.
