Federer to play Estoril Open

This is abit shocking. I didn't expect Federer to add any clay court tournaments in his schedule..

So now he will play Estoril Open --> Monte Carlo ----> Rome ---> Hamburg ----> Roland Garros. I hope this will help and he will finally win his 1st French Open.

I looked it up myself:

april 14: Estoril
april 21: Monte Carlo
april 28: -
may 5: Rome
may 12: Hamburg
may 19: -
May 26: Roland Garros

Looks like a pretty decent schedule. When he has played Estoril and Monte Carlo he can evaluate how his game holds up till that moment. After that one week to have some rest. Then Rome and if he feels up to it Hamburg or vice versa (he probably won't drop Hamburg). I actually think that playing all of them would be a better preparation than 3 tournaments. Three tournaments seems to me like it's just enough but not more.

Also I always wonder what the use is in playing Hamburg, that tournament is completely different from the other graveltournaments in terms of play.

Not having many points to defend is a plus, I doubt he'll skip Rome. I think he'll see how things go, like he has done for the last couple of years, and Hamburg will be the most likely to go if he does well in MC and Rome.

I like the fact that Federer is putting more efforts into winning the Roland Garros. I hope it pays off. If Federer gets even fitter than this year, he can definitely win it. And also, now he plays 1 extra tournament, he can get used to the clay and improve his movement on the court surface, certainly a plus.

Yeah I think it's really bothered him that he's missed out on the title three years running now. Especially the last two, losing in the final when a victory would have meant he would have won a calendar year Grand Slam.
