Federer to play with On-Running tennis shoes?

I'm skeptical that they are announcing a tennis shoe already. Likely some version of the Cloud X/Hi with the RF logo on it. But I'd love to be surprised since their shoes are mostly great.

I wouldn’t be surprised. The sooner he leaves Nike the better. Maybe these shoes will have his RF logo?

Nah. It's prob going to be a signature running and/or leisure shoe, as he has invested in the company.

On makes nice shoes, but they're all built over the same mold, so to speak. A competitive tennis shoe can't make use of those tubular holes in the soles imo. Add to that, I can't see Fed straying too far away from the vapor mold, and I don't think Nike would see kindly to a reverse engineered On tennis shoe, that looks eerily similar to the Vapor :)

I bought a pair of ONs when Fed bought shares in it because I thought they looked cool. After about 2 months in them; WOW! I love them. If they are making tennis shoes I’m all in.
You just give the reason why Uniqlo throws the UPS outfit and the dental collar on RF in recent years. You just purchase something just by who is endorsing and then.... Boom is good. I don't know if they can make a really good vapor update like asics did with ND

The silhouette in the advert does look tennis shoe, does look vaporish.
Sort of, but it also resembles the Cloud Hi, which is their weird pseudo boot. All the talking points also mention the “urban exploration” stuff they’ve been pushing for a few years aka this is likely a leisure/lifestyle shoe. As someone mentioned above, their tech and last just won’t translate well to a tennis model in their current form and I’m not certain if a tennis shoe makes much economic sense for them in the current market.

I am in no way going to deny I bought my ON shoes or uniqlo stuff because they endorse Fed. However, I love my ON shoes and my Uniqlo stuff. Both are brands I probably never would have tried without Fed, so I guess people like me are the reason they do that. And well, it worked, that’s simply effective marketing. Getting exposure for a good product.

He finally leaves Nike and switches to On-Running?
My money is on yes.

They've had plenty of time to think about a tennis shoe... it's not like sending a man to Mars; they make great shoes, and their engineers are bad-ass so they can look at what Nike and other brands do for tennis and take the best ideas and make a shoe.

And they've had plenty of time to talk to Roger about it.

The guy just had knee surgery and then a knee procedure, you think he is going to mess with his sneakers this late in his career...I go with ZERO chance! It is going to be a running or leisure shoe.
They literally make athletic shoes for people who’s knees and back are getting bad.

Like - that’s what their “engineers” have been doing for years.

I got my $200-250 pair of cloud runners years ago at an orthopedic shoe store where they scanned my feet/ posture/ movement with machines and all that crap - and the ON running shoes literally saved my knees and got me running fast again on hard surfaces.

So I think it’s at least quite possible they’ve been working w Fed for a while on tennis shoes.

And why would it be so impossible for smart designers who make high tech athletic shoes for serious issues? It’s not like Nike shoes have some secret design that can’t be examined completely and replicated to the T if they wanted.

Dude, I truly respect the opinion above...that said, ZERO chance. The sneaker and the racket are the 2 most important things. Fed's vapor, from shank, to vent, to outsole is highly custom. I agree ON can get close, but they aren't making the VAPOR.

And it is announce on Swiss media publications the reason for July 6th is because it is the exact date 17 years ago he won 2003 Wimbledon and it will NOT be a tennis shoe. It will be an all white sneaker running/casual! There ya go.

I actually believe this could be a serious tennis shoe he wears. ON shoes are known for being well cushioned shoes. If Fed’s knee is feeling weak, he should use a shoe that will have less wear and tear on his knee than the Vapor X, which has very little padding. I think the cushioning level will be around that of maybe a gel res 8 or zoom zero.

good for you.
I bought as well On Shoes, before Roger started to endorse them, but I can't run in them, as getting knee pain for anything longer than 10km, and they are not even that comfortable for me for daily usage.
I have seen a spike in On Shoes at running events a few years ago, but in 2019 there were visibly less On shoes, and visibly more Asics.

That explains a lot about the author of that statement (or the one who agrees with it).

The statement that comfort and style are mutually exclusive is well renowned; in fact it is a universal truism. I must confess that I myself am both unfamiliar with the author, and unsure of the veracity.

I mean I am not sure why this is even being debated. Fed will not wear ON sneakers on court for a tennis match, plain and simple. NO CHANCE.
It’s actually more like 100% chance he will wear ON sneakers on court; it’s just when... it’s not like it’s a casual sponsorship deal, he a partial owner of the company. It’s in his best interest to wear them on court he just won’t force the issue until it’s right.

Like Murray with UA, if the sole purpose was to have him wearing ON they would hijack another silhouette and put the logo on it but in interviews he’s said the goal was to make tennis shoes. He will take this year off and tune them practicing and I’d be willing to put money that in 2021 AO he’s wearing ON shoes.

You are probably the first person who I have come across that isn't happy with their ON shoes. Which ones do you have? I have the Cloud X and Cloudfoam and I have put a lot of miles on them without any discomfort whatsoever. I had a meniscus tear arthroscopy procedure done on my knee last Sep too so comfort is a key for me these days.

I still use my Hokas for longer runs as they feel very different and I'm used to them, but ON are fantastic quality and so comfortable for me even for casual runs or every day wear.

You are right in that I haven't seen a lot of ON in the running community generally (and I know that just my observation alone is a very small cross section of the target demographic I'm sure) but I think that it is mostly because of the boutique nature of the shoe. The fact that they have to compete with running specific powerhouses like Hoka, Brooks etc doesn't really help either.

My daughter saved up her allowance & purchased ON Cloudstratus last fall. She is into long distance running & is also captain of her high school varsity team.Their team is full of kids who wear Saucony, Brooks,Hokas & Mizunos etc very running specific shoes. She is the only one who wears ON and is extremely happy with them. She did her fastest 5K time wearing these and trains for much longer distances in those too.Quality & perfomance wise these are on par with the best in the industry.I might get myself a pair of plain Clouds just to get a feel out.

It’s actually negative zero chance lol. I can guarantee you it’s not a tennis shoe. Let’s just wait till July 6th and circle back.

Unless one subscribes under certain "truisms" there is no point of mentioning them, so I must admit that I thought that you are trying to make a point. Apparently you didn't.

If Fed’s vapor are custom made, then they are not really vapors anymore , and any brand shoe designer/engineer could replicate the custom outsole, insole etc...
I’ll be truly intrigued to see him wear a new pair of shoes in maybe his last season on tour

no, not only me. My partner was running with On shoes in the past, but since she tried Mizuno, there is no way she will run in On again.
And as I said, I did see plenty of On shoes at running events a few years ago, but apparently they were losing market share. Though, can't say what happens on a worldwide level.

As for my shoe, I think I went for Cloudace, as they should provide more support from the On range.
