Federer to play with On-Running tennis shoes?

ouch - that was disappointing.... i was genuinely expecting something more "lively" than the all white/tiny gold letterings..... (that elegance look can only "last" a certain time... but hey, and from what i have read so far, i agree, the $400 price tag is a joke/insult.....
even at half price, i'd have to think long and hard about it... (not dissing the technology/craftsmanship... this is purely on its appearance.. lol)

I'm just wondering how much better the 'Swiss Engineering' is than any other shoe company. For them to put that actually on the shoe itself, must mean something . . . .

Are people salty because it’s not an on-court tennis shoe? It’s a “series 0” limited edition shoe. Limited to 1,000 pairs. Federer said there were other shoes in the pipeline. My guess is they’re not all going to be limited edition.

Pretty clean and classy shoe. I like what they did with the "ON" logo on this one (was afraid it was going to be too big), but I don't like "The Roger". The perforated dot details and stitching add a nice touch on the side and toe box. I like the indents in the sole to break up the all flat sole look. To me, it doesn't look cheap but need to touch and feel it by hand to verify. Overall, it looks like a good everyday shoe that Fed can wear off-court/after matches with his uniqlo attire and during photoshoots, instead of wearing his other plain white "common projects" shoes. Old school looking shoe with new school tech (light, comfortable). They do have the ability to make a great on-court tennis shoe for sure and was hoping for one, but may need more time and more testing which now would be the perfect time to do it.

Like I said in my first post. RF will finish his playing days with Nike tennis shoes.
This is what Fed told Complex magazine:

"One day I am sure I will play in an On tennis shoe," he says. "The issue about a tennis on-court sneaker is it just takes a long time to build, to be honest. If you want it absolutely perfect, I would need more time for it."

nah, just with so much "anticipation"... it came out a R.ON.... hope the next effort will be more on-court performance focused, as the man said.

yes - maybe when he retires.... that should give him/them enough time to perfect his retirement tennis on-court sneaker for his senior/exhibition matches 8-B

Alas it’s not a tennis shoe. But it really does open up a solid foundation and future for ON. The shoe still has its cloud tech but the outside is covered (kind of how Yeezys use the boost tech but the covering is different) this opens up a world of possibilities for the company and this could potentially solve the dragging problem when they make a tennis shoe. You let us down Roger and ON, but good for you.

If Fed’s vapor are custom made, then they are not really vapors anymore , and any brand shoe designer/engineer could replicate the custom outsole, insole etc...
I’ll be truly intrigued to see him wear a new pair of shoes in maybe his last season on tour
Last season, lol.

Right, when he is retired and playing exos.

This sounds like codewords for: “Nike has me under contract till I retire”

I remember it took Andy a while with UA when he switched to design a shoe he liked. Maybe Roger is also comfortable with the nike model. He has worn them his whole career. To be fair, I haven't seen anything with the RF logo on it so you could be right about the Nike theory.

Individually numbered, first production run... Maybe made in Switzerland too? I'll be entering the raffle, I think it'll turn into an item for collectors and potentially resellable down the line. In any case, It's a beautiful sneaker. Exactly how Roger is, I wouldn't mind it as an off court shoe or something.

If he wearing Nike shoes for free, than he really playing himself tbh
RF has no deal with nike, and in a way got shafted by the Uniqlo deal because of this. He will continue to wear Nike during his professional playing days and wear ON off court.

Megamind, you right. The GOAT or one of wearing something for free is crazy but $300MM lol.

Looks like a good quality product, but also looks like a standard Common Projects type silhouette that a designer added stuff to until it looked “sporty”

The heel cap, midsole and air holes make it look a bit over designed and confused.
Been on the shoe industry for more than 10y and those shoes are fugly. You nailed it, they look over designed, yet trying to achieve a clean “no bs” style. Confusion is the word, and all the gold printed logos make them look cheap. They don’t even look comfortable

Just curious, what are your fave tennis shoes?

Look on the bright side; unlike the situation with his Uniqlo clothing, wannabes can now actually buy something at retail that will presumably be close to what he's actually wearing. #iwearroger'suniqlobecauseit'ssuchgoodvalueformoney(icanaffordroger's400dollarplimsoles)

I listened to a podcast with Fed today. He didn’t say for sure he’d never play on the ATP tour with On tennis shoes. He said maybe. If he plays beyond next year then I think there is a chance. If he retires some time next year then no.

Since I came back to tennis 2y ago I’ve only been using Yonex eclipsion. I started with the v2, loved them, and now I also have the v1 that is quite impressive. In fact I’ve only played once with them (covid and twisted ankle) but I like the fact the heel is better locked on those (I wear orthopedic insoles).
I haven’t tried a lot of shoes since it was love at first sight with the Yonex. Previously I owned some lunar ballistec which didn’t last long. Prior to that I really loved my zoom breathe cage OG, fit and cushioning were perfect

Article is not correct. He has no shoe contract. He said himself. Just go to YouTube and watch Wimbledon 2018 round 1 press conference. No shoe contract. None.
Thats what I thought. Funny how Nike still goes to the effort of matching his Uniqlo colour ways at times, though last year he largely wore retail generic colors.

Yeah. Interesting point you make. From what I know, at first they did, and most internally were not happy. That is why all last year they only provide retail versions. I was surprised for AO this year they made him one to match the kit. I suspect it won't last and he will wear whatever generic retail version to match. Could be wrong though.

Got to love the self proclaimed sneaker heads that for years displayed and admitted irrationality on the subject suddenly becoming sober when it comes to a $400 dollar lifestyle shoe, just because it is from a company Federer switched to. Add to that that they haven't even touched the shoe, let alone wear it, and it becomes pretty apparent what the backstory is.

BTW, which is the most comfortable shoe in that style?

I think it looks very boring. And it costs €240,-
Looks like a basic Zara trainer yet it will cost 20x the price.
$400 is an insult.
Ugly shoes.

Well that was a disappointing shoe launch.
Agree with the above.

The shoe looks like a bit of a tribute-to-a-tribute, cannibalizing the old Fubu, K-Swiss and Reebok urban fashion lines that were popular in the mid 2000s and were inspired by heritage tennis fashion.

In 2020, there are so many designers taking the original tennis shoe silhouette and subverting it to make really interesting and cool looking shoes. For "On" to stand out, they needed to do a better job than this.

Roger did look quite fit and healthy and appropriately dressed, but even the product launch itself was also kind of weird and low-key. It seemed very ad-hoc and slapped together right down to the community theatre style packing crates backdrop and tennis court optical stripes stenciled onto the set.

No. How many people wear lifestyle shoes? Lots. How many people wear tennis shoes? Less than lots. How many people have several pairs of lifestyle shoes? Quite a lot. How many people have more than one pair of tennis shoes? Not a lot. If you were going to make and market a shoe would you go for a large market or a niche market?
Im talking about specifically for a Roger branded shoe
Agree with you for nonRoger branded shoes
