Federer v Djokovic statistic

Federer is 1.85m tall and Djokovic 1.88m. So the average height of the Wimbledon finalists in 2014 is 1.865m.

Here are the heights of some previous years:

2004 Federer (1.85) v Roddick (1.88). Average 1.865
1994 Sampras (1.85) v Ivanisevic (1.93). Average 1.89
1984 McEnroe (1.80) v Connors (1.77). Average 1.785
1974 Connors (1.77) v Rosewall (1.70). Average 1.735
1964 Emerson (1.83) v Stolle (1.90). Average 1.865

The height of the finalists is the same as it was 50 years ago, and not as high as 20 years ago.

So the next time anyone says that tennis has moved into an era where taller players dominate, remember to treat that statement with a whole load of scepticism.

And remember that the tall, big serving Raonic is out, whereas the perfect height Federer is still in (even at an advanced age for a tennis player).

There are 50 years in 5 decades yet you only came up with 5 finals to prove your point. LOL !!

The fact is from the 90s to now, there's no undersized player dominated the sport. The last player who was Rosewall's height(5'6") won a slam was in 1989 FO. Most of the slam winners are at least 6' and above. All evidences point to players at optimum height is around 6' to 6'3".

Actually I only chose arbirtrary 10 year gaps. If I had decided to choose finals to prove my point I might have chosen

1971 Newcombe (1.83m) v Smith (1.93m). Average 1.88. Taller than the 2014 finalists.

Or given the example of Anthony Wilding, champion 1910-1913, height 1.87m. Taller than Federer, Nadal, Sampras. Or Tilden, champion 1920/1921/1930. Height 1.88m.

'Undersized' players have only rarely dominated the sport. That is what you would expect with a distribution. Similarly 'supertall' players have rarely dominated. Again that is what you would expect.

You are right about the optimum height. It is 1.85m (6'1"), and has been for decades.

The tallest Wimbledon final was probably 1991 Stich (1.93m) v Becker (1.90m). Nearly a quarter of a century ago...

Maybe 20 some years ago the NBA was more popular/appealing/exciting thus drawing the majority of taller athletes towards basketball. Everybody wanted to "be like Mike". Just a thought.

Just for fun I have checked the current ATP rankings for players under 21

http://live-tennis.eu/rankings_under_21

the players are (age in brackets)

1 Dominic Thiem (20)
2 Nick Kyrgios (19)
3 Jiri Vesely (20)
4 Jack Sock (21)
5 Diego Sebastian Schwartzman (21)
6 Facundo Arguello (21)
7 Denis Kudla (21)
8 Bernard Tomic (21)
9 Marco Cecchinato (21)
10 Luke Saville (20)

and their heights

Thiem 1.82m
Kyrgios 1.93m
Vesely 1.98m
Sock 1.85m
Schwartzman 1.70m
Arguello 1.78m
Kudla 1.80m
Tomic 1.95m
Cecchinato 1.85m
Saville 1.87m

The average....1.85m :)

Astonishing how it simply doesn't change. And if I were a betting man, I would bet on Sock, Kudla, Cachinato and Savile to be the most successful, and for Schwartzman and Arguello to be more likely to have longer careers than Vesely and Tomic.
