And VamosRafa thinks that Roddick is going to beat Federer. Sorry, I just don't see that happening. Blake was absoultely hammering the ball. He doesn't even have half the court coverage as Blake does. If Roddick gets to the final he is mince meat.

You are crazy...Blake I believe was the best chance to take out Fed, and he couldnt. If you think Roddick or Youzhny could do any better, you need to take some pills:mrgreen: or maybe Davydenko will take him out??? LMAO

Way to go Blake, that was a great fight. I'm glad he's the american #1.
exactly. blake looked like he was gonna fold like a wimp . . . but he came back and showed some real fight. VERY cool. he's still a bit erratic. and he has to stop standing around admiring his shots when he thinks he's hit a winner (cos fed was running everything down like a greyhound) . . . but he did well.

fed can't be thrilled with how he played the break points, the big points . . . he served for the first, the third, the match . . . . and he's lucky blake is so up and down/hit or miss. but he made it through, and i guess that's all that counts.

Choked a bit too much for his own good... But he still came away with it.
The crowd played a part in that, they were screaming out during the serves and some of Fed's groundstrokes.

He better keep it together or this one isn't going his way...

I dont feel that Roger has been strong going into this U.S Open, he hasnt played great yet.If he gets to the final and faces Roddick, he will get beaten, the guy has played alot of hours!!!

Blake put up a good fight at the end. Fed certainly let him loose, so he made such a mistake.

If you watch the patterns of his game, he tends to do well after a tough game.
but after an easy game, he tends to not play well. Remember that just before Nalbadian beat him last Dec, he beat Gaudio with two 6:0s. 6:0 is not a good sign, because it makes you lazy.

LOL how true!
I mean I don't like the fact that Federer is winning everything. So tonight I thought maybe James could have taken him out but it seems now that Roger is gonna win the entire damn thing. I don't see Roddick or Mikhail stopping him.

Yeah, that crowd was giving it to him during crucial points all night. If he faces Roddick, it's gonna be hell. But then again, Roddick isn't as much a threat as Blake was. I said it before, Blake was the toughest obstacle for Fed.

Finally.

A match with Federer where there was drama! :)
The first set was fantastic matchplay, IMO.
I love it when Fed has setpoints against him, and then takes the set :)

The second set was a bit of a bore...

The third and fourth were good play, except for the fact that Fed choked big time in both. Where's Fed's mental toughness? If he's winning and then some obstacle (like opponent not giving up in what can be the final game) comes up, he gets totally lost nowadays....

Anyway, I'd say that it will only get easier from now on for Fed...

I also think at this moment Blake is better than Roddick.
but we'll see.

I agree. Fed is like your immune system, if nothing's challenging and stressing it once in a while, it'll become too complacent and sluggish.

What are you people thinking. Could Fed have put it away earlier? Sure. But Blake was playing some great great tennis, and was smashing every ball.

How the hell is it that Federer "gets lost" whenever someone challenges him? He won. That's really all that matters.

It's really a laugh that people think Roddick has such a great chance of beating Federer. I think Roddick's playing the best he's ever played, but it still isn't as good as Blake was playing, and it still isn't good enough to beat Federer on his typical Slam level of play. And if Federer plays top of his game, it's a wipeout.

Ace, it might be better if you went easy on the multiple exclamation marks and gave the match a little thought. Federer played against Blake and perhaps about 15000 vociferous fans. Toward the end, Blake's missile-like returns on the second serve finally started going in. He went for broke, knowing that it was the only thing he could do. The crowd was cheering on first serve faults from Federer. Some idiot even whistled loudly during his service motion. In that pressure cooker situation, something's got to give. Luckily for Federer, his chokes were answered by chokes from Blake. A choke from Federer is ok once in a while, considering that he was a certified choker in his younger days. He may still not win the title, but to call him a headcase, when you saw some human frailty, is just ridiculous. It is a wonder how you oscillate so dramatically.

I like Federer a lot, and I hated it when he lost serve in the third set. Still, I got a smile out of the fact that one of justineheninhoogenbandfan/federerhoogenbandfan/davey25's predictions went out of the window. I want Federer to win the USO, but I find his penchant for making predictions at every single opportunity very irritating.

Well, if Federer beats Davydenko and Roddick beats Youzhny, he better be prepared!!!U have to be ready for that, u have to block it out!!!!!

Just watch and see, i am a big Fed fan but his play has left alot to be desire. The guy gets very lazy.

wow, how'd he get very lazy? He got tight and missed 2 easy forehands sure but he always ran down shots as much as he could.

anyway, did u all see the ppl who left the game, 3rd set, Fed serving at 5-3? They wanted to beat the traffic? LOL they missed out on a lot!

Federer seemed a bit confused during the on-court interview. He must have been wondering why the heck was he still standing in Ashe stadium at this hour.

blake should have played the big points like nadal: take a lot of time to try to get the first serve in. He played the big points too fast !

Great match!

That one, plus the first two Agassi matches, I think, were the best US Open 96 matches. And it's always the night matches that are more spectacular... they should make a 3 or 4-week Grand Slam Tournament only with night matches.

Of course the match-up between the players matters, but aside from that is there anyone who preferes the day more than the night session?

A tough match was a good thing. Roger seemed a bit affected the crowd, especially since he hasn't played a night match at ashe all tournament. Now that he's struggled through a match against a hostile crowd, i think it'll bode well for him. How many times have we seen a player breeze through an easy draw only to lose against a player who's match tough? He'll be ready be ready for a fight now especially if he has to face roddick and the pro-american crowd on sunday

Huh, maybe that's because they choose the best matchups for the night matches, eh? :p

The one point that did it for him: 5-4 Fed serving, advantage Blake. He went for a monstrous forehand return down the line but went wide. Two points later, he was at the net shaking hands with Fed.

I know that Davydenko has an 0-7 record against Fed but looking at the matches, the guy always plays him tough. That Aussie open match was tough.

Wasn't it a backhand? He really should have gotten it in play since Fed was missing so much. Bad decision by Blake there. (But he did go for broke a lot to get into that position in the first place.)

Federer and Blake had almost the same unforced errors total, Roger had about 20 more winners though. Just shows how hard it is to play Roger since Blake was hitting the ball so hard and still had only about 2/3rds the winners Roger had.

roger equals lendl's record !

bravo roger ! :D
with that QF win over james he equals lendl's record of consecutive SF in gran slam with 10 !
(open era)

Did anyone agree federer let blake win 3rd set? as a return that blake respect federer so much and with his home support.
i am pretty sure federer didn't want blake to feel too bad after the bagel set

Don't give Federer that much credit. He lost the 3rd set because his level dropped a bit and Blake's regained his 1st set level. Federer is very far from perfect, but he almost always gets the job done.

Wow amazing match, I was there last night. Real edge of your seat tennis, Blake really showed heart in the last set. I have to say even though Blake's my favorite payer and I was rooting for him, I did feel really bad for Fed with the whole crowd against him (i.e. cheering when he screws up, booing him when he challenges). Poor guy, I mean he's just doing his best, it's not his fault he's good. I guess that's New York for you

That crowd made me sick too...i guess many people there didn't like him coz he was simply too good
