So what a semi-final line-up. Djokovic-Murray and Federer-Del Potro.

Federer has beaten Del Potro the last 327 times they played but the Argentine has played him tougher by each match. On paper Federer should win this in 2 but you never know with him these days.

Wow, some of you guys are pretty desperate to get the poll up first!! Fed just won his quarterfinal like 10 seconds ago.

Fed is going to trounce Delpo then tell him his time is still to come and he has plenty of Slams left in him.

Federer and Del Potro have only met on grass once at Wimbledon 2007 right? Should be interesting to see how much he has improved against Federer on this surface.

2012:

Federer def. Del Potro AO QF 64 63 62
Federer def. Del Potro Rotterdam F 61 64
Federer def. Del Potro Dubai SF 76(5) 76(6)
Federer def. Del Potro IW QF 63 62
Federer def. Del Potro RG QF 36 67(4) 62 60 63

No. 6: ????

Not much pattern as the match at IW was just a walkover for Fed. And he also cruised in the last 3 sets. If he did it on clay he can do it on grass, Fed too hungry for the gold.

There was sort of a pattern after IW. Del Potro was tougher to beat on faster surfaces (Dubai, Rotterdam 6-1 6-4 the match was closer than the score indicates with Fed saving like 20 break points) than slower ones (beatdowns in Australia and Indian Wells) but then Del Potro won the first 2 sets at the French Open on clay.

Going purely by form - Fed has been playing OK from the baseline, a little patchy, and he's been serving great most of the times, especially under pressure. Haven't seen much of Del Potro - judging by the scorelines he's been all bussiness - doing enough to go through, lost just 1 set en route to the semis (to Simon) while Fed had a slip in the 1st round against Falla.

Not much history between the 2 on grass with the only encounter 5 years ago at Wimbledon, the last "prime Federer at Wimbledon" vs an 18-year old Del Potro.

You can throw out all the h2h analysis. Del Potro is not the same beast on grass as he is on other surfaces.

I disagree with that assessment. The last time Fed lost a match that he really should have won was against Tsonga and Berdych at Montreal and Cincy last year, respectively. They were on fire and can beat just about anyone on a good day. The match against Djokovic at the US Open was sure a heartbreaker, but Fed wasn't the heavy favorite. If he had lost in straights or 4 sets nobody would've been all that surprised.

In the last 12 months Fed has been the most consistent player on the tour, winning eight titles and making another final, losing only to Joker and Rafa in between.

Meanwhile, Joker and Rafa have lost to guys like Florian Mayer, Kei Nishikori, Tipsaravic, Verdasco, Rosol, Mardy Fish, Dodig, Ferrer, etcetc.

I'll take Federer in two against DelPo.

How many times in a row has Fed actually beaten him?

No frickin way is Fed winning this -- DelPo in 3. Federer will inevitably put too much pressure on himself and end up losing. How many times have we seen this pattern repeat itself in Fed's post-prime period. Bleak day ahead tomorrow for Federer fans.

is the match tommorow or saturday..?

Edit: it's tommorow :/ Will the old man be fresh enough? 10is may be right- tommorow may be a grim day for fed fans.

It feels strange to see Federer in an Olympic semi final, considering he was last here 12 years ago

Spoken like a true armchair expert. :)

I am still rooting for the upset. Federer in 2.

Fed has never accomplished 7 consecutive wins against Delpo ..
the 1st time Delpo defeated him was after 6 consecutive defeats he received from Fed ..
the last meeting between the two was the 6th win in a row for Fed since his last defeat against Delpo in the 2009 WTF ..

this could be interesting :)

I hope Fed in 2 though ..

you must be at least 50% Vulcan, and far too logical for most people around here.

Tina in 5 sets.

I actually voted for Delpo in 2 (for fun)

Actual result would be Fed winning it 6-4,7-5

Delpo will break down mentally when trying to hold his serve @ 6-5 and will throw the match away.

I have to give the edge to Federer, not just because of the consecutive grass wins and the amazing year he has had, but the surface just suits roger much better, especially in that one area that won Fed the match today- movement. Look at what Ferrer did Del Potro this year at Wimbledon.
DelPo will suffer the same problems Isner did today with moving around the court. Roger will work over DelPo with the angles, slices, and dropshots. I'm sure there will be a lot more returns in play, since Del Potro isn't at the same level of serving as Isner I'm sure the longer the match goes, if it goes that far in the first place, will also favor Fed

Hmmm, you can't see any 'pattern' after IW as the only match after IW is the RG match. Plus Federer didn't save that many BPs in Rotterdam, it was like just one in 3 service games that's all.

Either way Fed's form is OK so I will give him the edge.

I voted Roger in three, that's more of optimism.

I am worried about del Potro. Right from the day I saw the fixture, I wanted Roger to avoid del Potro. I feel that Roger's winning streak will end one day. It almost ended in RG, when he was two sets down.

I think Federer will win because grass isn't Delpo's strongest surface.

Though it is interesting to note that when they first played, Federer won 5 straight matches without losing a set. Then Delpo pushed Federer to 5 sets at the French in 09 before beating Federer at the USO.

Since Delpo's return to the tour, Federer has also won 5 straight matches without losing a set which then Delpo pushed him to 5 sets at this years FO. Who knows, maybe Delpo can upset Federer this time at the Olympics.

This observation adds strength to my doubts.. :(

Fed in two sets. Federer said in an interview yesterday, that he is really relieved about playing at least for a medal. Don't see him tighten up in that match. Delpo isn't movin well enough to bother RF.

i think it's cute that they posted the same quarterfinal results :)
i was sort of pleasantly surprised to look at the scores, i must admit that i completely missed the tennis matches (well missed most of em) due to gymnastics. riveting stuff that.

I meant till IW, obviously you can't find a pattern in 1 match:).

Either way Fed's form is OK so I will give him the edge.

Checked the stats for fun - Fed was 7/7 on break points saved while he converted 2 out of 5 he had - and that was really the story of the match.
