Liked Novak's speech. Even thoughn it was in French, it was clear that the man whoever he is called Novak a Croat. Novak tactfully corrected him and said he wasn't angry, but he is a Serb, but they're both the same. (but every Croat and every Serb knows they're not!) It must have taken a lot for him to say that.

and he didn't throw his shirt. He threw his racket instead.

Wow...what a stupid man. And yeah good on Nole for taking it well. I know quite a few Serbs who would rather die than be called Croat.

Roddick and Nadal probably feel less unhappy about their losses to Djokovic in this tournament now that he also took out the world's number 1.

I don't think anything makes tham happy when they lose a match.

I talked to Ivo's coach in Montreal after his Federer match, and said somehting about the 6/7 6/7 loss to Federer being a good outcome, , and he said , but it wasn't a win. Losing to Federer didn't make him or Ivo feel better about that loss.

It's only the wins that count.

Federer's 1st tournament in months and he loses in the final in which 2 sets went to tie breakers. Federer has played 3/4 finals and won 2 slams this year. Lets wait until after the US Open to judge whether or not Federer is on the decline, he looks a bit rusty at the moment as his huge angled shots and pace don't look to be there especially on the backhand side but what do you expect when he's just starting to come back from a long break. But decline???? Looks like rust to me.

I don't know if a Slam title, a Slam final and some good results at masters series events is so-so tennis. It's funny to me that whenever Roger loses a match, his career is nearing it's end and he's past his prime. After those losses to Canas, it looked over for Roger in the eyes of many, yet look at what he went on to do. Roger could face Djokovic in Cincy in the SF, and if he beats him there and wins the event, all of this past his prime talk will once again be forgotten.

Of course, everything is relative. A so-so Roger is better than 99% of the whole field. But by Roger's standard, he's been playing so-so tennis.

I didn't claim Roger's career is over. I only said his ridiculous ownage is coming to an end.

I hope it's rust too but I'm afraid it's not. Remember that "slump" period earlier in the year when he lost to Canas back-to-back?

And why is he not playing more in the first place?

Back to this final, I still can't believe he couldn't close the 1st set out, at 40-0.

As Djoker said to the crowd, don't get mad Fed can't win them all.

amazing win for djokovic. he knocked out all the top seeds in this tournament, which is tremendous. hopefully this momentum will carry to the USO.

Federer has got to be worried about his prospect of winning the US Open this year :)

I'd still take Federer over Djokovic in a best of 5 match anyday. But you're right, I don't think both Nadal and Federer won't be delighted to see Djokovic's name in their half at the USO.
A pity, though, that the only match I could watch all week is the one Federer lost. But cudos to Novak for taking his chances in both TBs. 50:17 in TBs - 74% Must be nice to know you'll win 3 out of 4 times if it goes to a TB.
I'd like to see a rematch between both at Cincy, but probably won't have the time to watch it...

Get off of this board...no one wants you and your clever humour here. Me and my buds were about to have a sick golf party, foam fingers and everything.

Wow I need to lie down lol any time I use "golf" and "party" in the same sentence means something is wrong with me :)

Next time you use Golf and Party in the same sentence just say 'John Daly', a golfing party animal, eh?

great great tourney for the joker...
what surprised me about his play was his defense... don't know about roddick, but nadal had alot more errors than winners which is surprising, and fed also had a ton of errors. I think it was b/c of how deep djoko was hitting and on the run too

The great thing about this result was that Nole was not even playing to even half of his true potential level for most parts of the match and yet defeated Federer comfortably.
He should his true potential in the tie breaks were he absolutely schooled federer and making a huge statement that he has arrived on the big stag ;)
And Roger had once commented that Nole had a long way to go ,reality bites hard doesn't it federer ? ;)

Roger pacing himself

I think the reason Roger is not playing more is because his career now at age 26 is all about winning the required Slams to overtake Sampras, and winning the French. He has another 5 or 6 years at his prime and is pacing himself, and I think this is why he will never over-exert himself with too busy a schedule for the remainder of his career. I see his season being all about the Grand Slams, the Masters Cup, and collecting enough Masters titles to overtake Agassi's haul of 17. When his career is over these are the numbers that will really matter, the No.1 ranking is a by-product of this.

Roger would be an idiot to start risking injury and burnout by over-competing at this stage of his career. The down-side of this is that other players like Nadal, who compete more during the year, could get closer to him in the rankings if he doesn't keep up his points by winning 2-3 Slams and a few Masters events every year. But i tend to think overtaking Sampras on the all time grand slam list is the most important thing to him and this is why he will always tend towards resting up more before big events.

Potential?

Spider you say Djokovic was playing to only half of his potential? So what percentage of his potential did you think Federer played??

They both played well below their true potential and Djokovic played the big points better than Federer, and as a result, he won, simple as that.

There were many times in this match were Novak was just playing average tennis .
For instance he just gave up the second set to Federer ,with playing some real crappy tennis and without much effort at all .Yes Federer played well but Novak was absolute pathetic .The standard of his play went down by a few notches in this set .
Just as I started thinking Nole is fatigued out he pulled out all the trigors and broke federer comfortably in the first Game of the third set .This means He could have played better in second set but choose not to(for some weird reason that i dont seem to get)
If he goes on to show the level of tennis he played in both those tie breaks during the entire course of the match i believe federer would not even have won a set againt him .That was my point .;)

Yes, 76 26 76 sounds like a comfortable win. At least I hope you believe yourself.

Federer can be beaten over 3 sets in these Masters series, because he allows his game to dip for some reason (complacency?) and often seems to play mediocre tennis (by his high standards). Just the way Nadal showed he is beatable even on clay in the Masters series over 3 sets, but he is so far invincible over 5 sets in the French. I think the same applies to Roger. It is possible to get the better of him over 3 sets in a Masters, but that task becomes very much harder over the longer matches in Grand Slams.

Djokovic also showed at Wimbledon and the French that he tires easily in long matches, as happened both times against Nadal, and especially if he has played a long one or two matches to get there. For my money the only player at the moment capable of beating Federer at the Australian, Wimbledon or US Opens over the longer distance is Nadal at his best, due to his superior physical fitness, his being a left-hander, and his head to head record over Federer which gives him a mental advantage.

On a hardcourt in a Grand Slam a player would have to sustain unbelievable tennis for 5 sets and for this reason i think Nadal is Federer's only real potential threat at Flushing Meadows.

I think Novak Djokovic beat world number 3 in the quarter finals, number 2 in the semi finals and number 1 in the final simply because he did not wear a hat ;)
