Khachanov should be ashamed that he couldn’t even beat Rafa. I knew Nadal didn’t have enough in him to play today.

@Hitman thoughts?

You thought Nadal would be obligated to play. The injury is significant? But then so was Federer's back in 2013 when in dismal shape he met his rival repeatedly.

Yes, I felt because of who he is and his relationship with Federer both personally and professionally, that he would feel obligated to play, and maybe he did and that is why he went out to practice to see if he at least had enough in him to give them the match they all want to see. The fact he stopped practice in ten minutes could mean it is an injury that will simply cause too much pain, and I don't think watching Nadal standing still as balls whizz past him is really that compelling.

It is also possible that Nadal recalls what happened to Federer when he did it back in 2013, playing injured, because of the obligation and how it ruined his entire 2013 season. And with the ever essential RG around the corner, the title IMO he must win to prevent being overtaken by Djokovic and stay relevant in the slam race, he's had to pull out.

Shame, I cannot say how bad the injury is, we will find out, but I highly doubt we will know until MC. Miami will be a no show.

I honestly cannot. I'm sorry but people have ended their careers much earlier due to injury. I understand nadal feels bad and is hurt but this narrative that he makes himself out to be the most injured person in the world when he is no.2 and still playing

Utterly disrespectful. He’s in the 99.9th percentile of matches played and is playing at a very high level at 32, about to turn 33.

But, like all greats in whatever fields, they internalize things until THEY believe it. It was peobsbly some PsyOP by Tio Toni from the beginning.

Gotta think Raonic will play Federer closer than Thiem based on what I'm seeing, but I think he's going to lose it in the third.

Rafa knows best what his body can and cant do.

The man is no robot. Seems to be a man of character.. He volunteered to help out on his native island of Mallorca last year when the island was hit by very very unusual and possibly global warming induced floodings .
He chipped in and helped liike any man of dignity would in the work needed then and there.

Whats worse? No Tennis? And an advantage to the guy who doesn't play?
And who exactly would be the lucky loser - since Khachanov probably left on a flight home or to his next tournament within hours of losing? Most losers do leave the tournament site immediately, so unless the injured winner announces withdrawal within an hour or so of the match, you'll have to send a plane to pick up the "lucky" loser

Rafa says in Spanish that his clay schedule remains Monte-Carlo, Barcelone, Madrid, Rome and Roland-Garros. And that he hopes to end able to complete it.

Nadal can be incredibly thickheaded. There is NO way he is going to complete all these tournaments and win RG.

Great chance for Novak to win RG #2. OR even for Fed. Nadal will probably retire injured or be too tired with that schedule.

That was at OT, always been a challenge. But I guess you should be thanking us for whooping you at Anfield so bad that you fired Mou.

In a 2 legged tie, you would have to play at Old Trafford. So no respite for Liverpool there. They'll just have to pray that they'll get a good result at Anfield. The United of Solskjaer is a cut above the garbage that they were under Mourinho so I assure you, there won't be a repeat of that match this time around. Liverpool will have to work hard for a win.

That's cutting Madrid out. Progress.

My guess is Nadal won't win RG this time. With his fitness and injuries, I don't really believe he can beat Djokovic in Paris.
Hell, I would even put Djokovic favorite over a healthy "current" Nadal.
Not to mention that Nadal's injuries have probably shaken his confidence. He really has NOT won big matches for a long long time against the very best.

Honestly, I feel that this is the last stage of Rafa's career. I can see him calling quits this or the next year. He doesn't seem in shape to even play a semi-decent calendar.
He's won 17 slams, which is nothing to sneeze at. And I think he knows that he's no longer in GOAT contention, what with Djokovic on fire and Fed still relevant. So no point in destroying your body, no?

I am sure Rafa is a good person. He's honest, he gives everything he can to the sport and he's good for the sport.
At the same time, I think he has a bit of a blindspot with the injuries, where guys who "play through" and don't miss events are dismissed as obviously not as injured, and guys who miss entire seasons (like Del Potro) don't even come into his thought process. Nadal is 32 and still healthy enough to play a full schedule and all the majors. Del Potro, Andy Murray and others would look at that and think Nadal is blessed with longevity and good health.

Remind me of who's in the finals and who went out early?

Remind me of who won the last 3 slams WITHOUT even losing a set in the finals? How many players have done that. Who cares about Mickey mouse tournaments?

I think people are just worried that Djokovic is going to break Fed's slam record. And honestly, the level Djokovic is playing recently, has hardly ever been seen. He is next stage of evolution in tennis - the relentless machine.

funny you didn't give up anything when Federer tanked (at least once if not twice) to avoid Nadal at the USO, but i digress.
You mean 2010/11? Getting yourself to MP is hardly tanking. Djok was just too good

As for 2017, Fed has his issues with Delpo anyway, honestly the outcome of that match was less than surprising too.

I just don't like Joker's game, find it boring. I like him as a person, but I like his wife better. If he stays healthy he will get more majors, but he'll never be the GOAT. Fed has more aura and is a worldwide phenomenon. Kind of like if Lebron gets more rings than Jordan but will never be as popular or have been as influential.

Fed could fill a 100,000 stadium for a practice session if it was promoted correctly. Not a chance for Joker unless in Serbia. Do you think Joker could pull off the Laver Cup?

Mr Feeny, are you watching them now? United have been wretched tonight, toothless. Second game in a row.
I love United, but we wouldn’t stand a hope against Pool.

Yeah but matches like that happen. You're bound to have disappointing results punctuate your season. United had that user Ferguson as well. But to play against your greatest rivals in a Champions league semi final is another matter altogether. I don't think either team would find it easy against the other or want to face the other. I just found the Liverpool fan's overconfidence a little funny given that they couldn't create a single chance against United the last time they played, and United were missing 6 first team players.

I see your point but regarding the LeBron bit, he's got 3 titles in 16 years and is going to miss the playoffs altogether this year. He'll keep declining and not many can envision a scenario in which he'll win another title. He is not catching Jordan's 6.

No!!!
Nadal gained too much titles on RG. Someone else should win this year's RG, for the good of tennis!
I won't complain if we get a new winner or Novak holding all four Majors again, it's not a big deal for me. But 12 is a much nicer number than 11. :p
I'm sacrificing my boys Fed and MILOS. Basically, I am willing to see Meles' Diamond Age finally prosper for the sake of greater cause. Messi won't know what hit him.
No holding grudges if the opposite happens? ;)

Time for Nadal to retire, he is like Serena and Venus all broken down. To many injuries, and should just call it quits. Lots of young talent to take his place. Fans deserve better!

You do realize we are undefeated at Anfield in the league for the past TWO years, it's a fortress and on a European night, it's world famous as one the best atmospheres. Granted OT has their own, we will just have to see if you get through Barca. But the last time we played you in Europe we came out on top. There's a reason we have five stars on our logo and are called European royalty.

God, that is such a dumb idea.
It's so dumb I can't even itemize all the ways it's dumb.

I think it makes sense for QF & SF.

Purely for the money involved. The people who paid good money face value for IW SF (let alone resale) got jobbed.

Every sport is about fans.

Like Wawrinka going against Novak WTF 2014.

It would make it better for fans. I can see that. But it would also be lame for fans. Imagine paying for a SF, and instead of Nadal-Fed, you get Fed vs the guy Nadal just beat in straights whole injured.

My ping was more about what it would do to the sport. It would suck to start seeing guys win tournaments after losing matches, only because the guy who beat them withdrew.

OMG,

i can not believe some of you Federer fans were actually trying to hype 'Hurkacz' or whatever his name is, as some kind of tough opponent!

shame on you!

there is literally nothing explosive in his game at all! his serve was quite weak for his height and his ground strokes are solid but have no extra umph or pop at all

Right but KK has been hyped up to be an amazing opponent yet cant win a set against a Nadal who is so injured he cant take to the court the next day...

as usual, its Nadal's myriad of injuries that is his greatest opponent...

Nope, Djokovic is. But yes the injuries dont help, but let's not act like it's more him than his opponents
