Not because of that, but because he was a better tennis player than Federer from the start of his career

2005-2007 dominates on clay against Federer and challenges him on grass
In 2008, he takes over the grass from Federer
In 2009, he takes over the hard from Federer

The only impregnable stronghold of Federer remains the ATP finals, where he finally capitulated in 2013

And what happened after 2013?

After 2015, Fedal was in his 30s, totally irrelevant since both of them played a huge number of duels in their best years and that's where Nadal mostly dominated and later very dominantly took over all the surfaces from Federer.
For that member

A 3-1 Fed win in Wimby or is it 2-1 or 3-1 Fed in ATP finals doesn't matter. What matters is the ONE not the THREE

These are fanatics. Best ignore them.
Didn't you start watching tennis in 2018 or 2019?
I watched all 3 of their duels on RG08,WB08,AO09, for me it's enough to see who is the better player between the two of them because both were in their prime years
The same is the case with 2011 and 7:0 (3 slams) to see who is the better player between Novak and Nadal.

Yes, 5-1 after Nadal's 2nd-best season is irrelevant

Nadal totally dropped a level after his awesome 2013 season, he never won a set off Djoko on HC again if memory serves correctly

The second best season was 2013, Nadal won 1 match in 2014 and Federer one in 2015. Only since 2017 have they started playing more often (Federer is 35 years old and Nadal is 30)
2006-2009 is the period that is the most important in their rivalry, remind me who dominated between the two of them in that period and who owned whom at the slams?

2006-2009.

Slow HC: 1-0 Nadal
Clay: 8-2 Nadal
Grass: 2-1 Federer
Medium fast or fast HC: 2-1 Federer

Not nearly enough matches on Federer favourite courts. He would’ve pummeled Nadal at Cincy or Madrid indoors.

RG08 WB08 AO09. Three surfaces, three wins by Nadal. Federer didn't cry for nothing...
For an ordinary tennis viewer, that is enough to see who is the better player between the two.

That has absolutely nothing to do with your comment about the 2006-2009 period. Federer dominated tennis then was slowly reeled in by Nadal who took over in 2008.

Nadal did beat Federer in the 2006 Dubai final.
One of his best wins. If they played 10 matches there, USO, Cincy, Madrid, YEC overall to match the clay matches Federer probably leads 7-3 at worst or something which helps the H2H look more respectable.

Of course he is number 3.
Mentally the weakest player of the big 3, that's why he has a negative score against them and lags behind in the slam and masters race.
He has a negative score against Djokovic because their peak years never overlapped and the majority of their matches were played when Federer was in his 30s and during Djokovic’s peak.

He has a negative record against Nadal due to matchup issues and a relative lack of meetings on grass courts (compared to clay where Nadal is obviously king).

Regarding mental strength, I do agree the other 2 are stronger mentally, but I also think you are underestimating how mentally tough Federer was in his prime. Take 2009 Wimbledon final as an example.

Nadal much better on his favourite surfaces, Federer a little better on his. Great match up for Nadal. I don’t know why you are cherry picking finals as if it means anything. I’ve laid out the stats for all to see.

Nadal is the better tennis player, simply.
You can continue to divide the hard surface into slow, medium and fast until tomorrow, it will not change anything in people's perception that Nadal is simply a better player.

Why is he the better player? He won 0 year end championships on fast indoor. He won 2 Wimbledon titles vs 8. Better on clay, and slow HC in their direct match up? Sure, but you’re pretty thick if you think Nadal is a better fast court player than Federer. That’s the whole point of tennis, the variety of surfaces and playing styles.

An anecdote told by Pablo Cuevas sheds new light on Rafael Nadal's extraordinary competitive mentality, confirming the Majorcan's reputation as one of the most determined athletes in the world of tennis.
The former Uruguayan tennis player shared an emblematic story that perfectly illustrates Nadal's competitive spirit. “The first time we trained together was in Hamburg and I won him a set,” says Cuevas. “From that moment on, he invited me to train with him about 25 times in six months, with the sole aim of winning sets and proving that that victory was just a fluke.”

Cuevas highlighted the contrast between Nadal's and Roger Federer's approach to training: “With Federer it was completely different. You could win him ten sets in a row during training and he wouldn't care, because he was working on other aspects of his game. Rafa, on the other hand, always trained this competitive side. It didn't matter how he felt that day, his number one goal was to win, even if he was working on something else."
