An anecdote told by Pablo Cuevas sheds new light on Rafael Nadal's extraordinary competitive mentality, confirming the Majorcan's reputation as one of the most determined athletes in the world of tennis.
The former Uruguayan tennis player shared an emblematic story that perfectly illustrates Nadal's competitive spirit. “The first time we trained together was in Hamburg and I won him a set,” says Cuevas. “From that moment on, he invited me to train with him about 25 times in six months, with the sole aim of winning sets and proving that that victory was just a fluke.”
Cuevas highlighted the contrast between Nadal's and Roger Federer's approach to training: “With Federer it was completely different. You could win him ten sets in a row during training and he wouldn't care, because he was working on other aspects of his game. Rafa, on the other hand, always trained this competitive side. It didn't matter how he felt that day, his number one goal was to win, even if he was working on something else."
