Federer vs Nadal: Whose retirement generated the bigger interest?

Probably about the same in terms of recognition - neither of them were shocking announcements by any means

Will be interesting to see how Novak approaches it whenever he is ready - that is unlikely to be until 2026 I suspect, depending on how things go over the next 12 months

Meh, boring answer. We needed some spicy controversial take and a fight.

Why didn't Tennis TV publish a compilation of all Nadal's titles, like they did with Federer? A very poor farewell from them.(n)

I vote at this occasion for Nadal
Becouse Davis Cup - expecially at home - has more importance than Laver Cup.
Just my opinion

Agreed on recognition. The two most popular ATG's of an era, both with a bit different notoriety, but equally respected and viewed. The fact they had at least a decent sports friendship really makes them inseparable.

However, I think for Novak I will be more interested in what recognition he gets overall. I do think he needs to try to distance himself from Nadal and the recent Fed retirements, or he will just be lumped in their era as usual. Even in retirement he still is trying to fight for the same level of adoration, and maybe he can finally get a bit if he drags things out.

Its not even a question, Fed for sure. He planned his retirement to the T.

This question feels very similar to trump crowd sizes question

Fed’s was much better and bigger. To do it at laver cup was really special and many legends turned out for it. Raga’s been pretty low key in comparison.

This is true. Had they retired 5-6 years before - that would generate more interest. Now they have overstretched their careers.
True, but that's a good thing of course. Nothing left, so nothing to regret for the rest of their lives. And therefore all of their records are genuine records to chase for upcoming generations.

Imagine caring more for a sensational retirement headline instead. I mean, let's say Sinner or Alcaraz could do this right now if they wanted... :-D

Rafa still hasn't played his last match

My sense is that while Rafa is pretty big internationally, Roger is still the bigger "celebrity". A little more buzz.

Federer announced his retirement on September 15, 2022. On the same day, Tennis TV published a compilation of all 103 titles...
Rafa announced his upcoming retirement on October 10, 2024. On the same day, the ATP (the owner of Tennis TV) published its Press Release on its website:

And on the same day, Tennis TV posted several tributes to Rafa on Twitter/X:

I'm sure, Tennis TV will continue to pay tribute to Rafa when he actually retires (after the Davis Cup final taking place from 19 - 24 November).

Whose retirement generated the most interest? Depends where you are. If you're in northern Europe and probably the US it would be Roger. If you're in southern Europe or in Central or South America, it would be Rafa. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world so most English speakers, like the posters on this forum, don't see the amount of publicity and interest that Rafa creates. He is incredibly popular around the world.

Nice try, Federer has fans ALL OVER THE WORLD including Spanish speaking countries. You know this because Federer has held exhibitions in those countries generating big crowds.

Nadal has plenty of fans in English speaking countries, and outside the Spanish speaking world, as well. Whether one prefers Nadal or Federer says a lot about you as a personality, in my opinion, beyond the language and nationality factor. Those who prefer Federer tend to love perfect art or a genius doing his thing. This appeals to those who love watching such a display, but Federer making tennis look easy makes such standards look unattainable for the majority of people. Those who prefer Nadal tend to love swimming against the tide, and raging against the machine, and they appreciate hard work more than art. Nadal making tennis look hard makes tennis look like something that anybody could learn to do.

The Nadal and Djokovic divide is different. Their difference is order (Nadal) and chaos (Djokovic).

A lot of the tennis establishment in Britain is set up in the more aristocratic air in the South East of England, but that certainly doesn't represent the majority of people in Britain. They live in different worlds altogether.

Preference is not the topic. Also there is a lot of generalization concerning whose retirement generated the most interest. Let's face it Federer's and Nadal retirement announcements didn't generate the same interest.

Your post, Fedfan, is proof that you don't know what the media in Spanish speaking countries tells. You have read somewhere (obviously written by Fedfans somewhere) that Fed held exhibitions in Spanish speaking countries, but you have no idea that Rafa also played exhibitions in South America and Mexico, generating big crowds. It's your own fault you lack information about Rafa.

Ha! Ha! Rafa fans and Fed haters are reaching once again concerning popularity because their fans and Djokovic fans need them to be seen as on the same level of popularity as Federer. But….but…but Rafa hasn’t retired yet and those Spanish speaking countries. Oh you care about the Laver Cup, you care that Federer started the LC and neither Rafa or Djokovic could do that.

Rafael already has huge honours while still an active player
other tennis atgs can only dream of these

Rafael Nadal unveils his statue at Roland-Garros 2021

Nadal is making his fourth Olympic appearance (2004, 2008, 2016) and is a two-time gold medalist (2008 singles, 2016 doubles).

He does not need a Laver Cup, in fact Federer wanted him to play with him for his last match, shows rafa's stature in Fed's mind, why do you want to be this petty?

I know it is all just trolling on this site but doesn't this bore you to do it repeatedly?
