The source is Darren Rovell.
I saw a tweet earlier in the week about Roger leaving Nike and also a post on here discussing the possibility.
Rovell is more circumspect and indicates Roger is still a Nike athlete as of right now.
"Just DON'T do it?"
Nike would obviously love to keep Federer, but if he is asking for an amount that is not acceptable, Nike may walk away. Nike holds several points of leverage, and it may be able to get Federer for significantly less than what he is demanding. Worst case scenario is they lose Federer, but retain his branding, while also freeing up cash to sign up more emerging generational stars in far more profitable markets like basketball and soccer.
Potentially interesting sports marketing case study in the works if Roger and Nike were to part ways.
The most interesting thing to come out of this so far for me is the factoid that Nike owns the RF logo and branding system, not Roger. This branding system is in everything from the clothes he markets to his social media presence but it is also used in charity organisations which are thought to be run under Roger's own auspices, like The RF Foundation.
