Federer: Will Sampras Congratulate Him?

The question is obviously straightforward. When Federer wins Sunday, Is Sampras going to be there to congratulate him on the passing of the torch? Or will Pete give Roger a call or text message? You see this is a big moment for the tennis world. The passing of the torch is something that we never see again. Federer will have won on all 3 surfaces, all 4 slams, and have tied Sampras for the most Slam wins of all time. Im sure Sampras is going to have mixed emotions, but what better way to show your class Pete, than to show up at Roland Garros Sunday and shake hands with the great Roger Federer. What a moment in tennis history that would be.

Wasn't he absent at AO '09 when he had a good chance to tie him? It'd be nice to see Sampras out there, but I don't think he's as present as Borg at these kind of matches.

Sampras will definitely call up Fed or do something. Sampras and Fed get along quite well and he might not be there for the match but he will call him or do something to congratulate him requiring Fed finally does tie him.

I don't think Sampras is going to follow him around from tournament to tournament until he ties/breaks the record, like Borg seems to. The man (Sampras) does have a life! But I'm sure he will phone him or something.

Federer still has a match to play on Sunday. While he's certainly the favorite to win that match, it's far from a bygone conclusion.

Instead of any threads actually discussing the match itself, this forum is littered with Federer fanatics breaking their arms patting themselves on the back for a victory that Federer himself hasn't even won yet. Give me a break.

Most of you guys who are now trying to predict the opening line of Fed's French Open acceptance speech spent last month writing Federer's obituary as a top tennis player.

Threads like this are enough to make one wish Soderling wins in straight sets.

Fed barely got through Delpo today.Soderling beat the king of clay and navigated through a very tough draw so people who think he doesn't have a shot at Sunday don't have a clue IMO.

Maybe for his 15th, not for the tie

I agree, and probably not for the 15th either. Emerson wasn't there when Pete broke his record at Wimbledon in 2000, and Pete shouldn't be there for Roger. Let him have his moment and cry on someone else's shirt.

I do think that Nike will have Pete do a commercial for Roger, the same way Emerson did one for Pete back in 2000 (it was pretty funny, Emerson said he was ready to get on court with Pete and get the record back, then waved a racquet at the camera in a menacing fashion). :)

Question? STRAIGHTFORWARD??,,, Mr. living-in-Basal, Switzerland? LOL!
This was a quasi-command if ever I heard one; a strongly inferred suggestion with ("the great Federer") fanboy overtones. :-)

Pete: I want you to pay homage to my favorite pro IN PERSON. That's how I read that. Don't worry, when Fed breaks Sampras' record---and he certainly will---I'm sure he'll be the first to congratulate Fed....unfortunately (being his own man) he may do it in private and not on the Fedfanboy's terms.

I agree with the woman's post above mine.

I, personally, think Sampras will pay for a large and over-blown ceremony just before the final, congratulating Federer on tying his record and completing the grand slam.

Then, after Soderling defeats Federer straight sets, Sampras will publicly castrate Federer and deliver his testicles to Soderling in a jar of saltwater.

This is how it must be.

I've seen an interview with Sampras where he says he'll be there (even if it's Melbourne) if the record's going to go. I doubt we'll see him on Sunday but expect to see him at the next GS final that Federer makes... but maybe he'll set a limit of three trips if Fed should fail to break the record the first couple of times lol...

I'll have a look for that interview...

I hate the fact people say WHEN, instead of IF. He'll be there if Fed BREAKS the record by the way, so at 15, he won't be there tomorrow. He wasn't there in Australia.

Why can't there be more thoughtful posts like this?

Pete said he wants to be there when Fed breaks his record, not ties it.

Of course, he will congratulate him.

Borg congratulated Soderling.
