Federer winning the 2013 Edberg award = the fix is in?

Well, he is coached by Edberg himself. I don't think the sportsmanship GOAT Stefan would coach a D-bag.

No comments about the Edberg award, the nominations don't make sense to me.
To not apologize in this instance is not cool.

May be I missed the apology, as it doesn't look like he did it right away. His reaction right after Sergi went down appeared like he couldn't care less. I may be wrong. Anyways no biggie, happens in the heat of the moment when under severe pressure, also stakhovsky wasn't hurt, so may be he did not feel too apologetic.

Federer was playing the tennis of his life in 2013?
He has shown steady improvement over the past ten years or so. He is playing better every year, so perhaps 2014 is the tennis of his life so far. He played incredible tennis at AO this year, and will probably play even better at RG!

Those cheap tricks may have worked in 2004 - 2007, but nowadays players just ignore those antics. Stakhovsky is just far superior on grass, cheap shots or not.

I liked the play and if it were still the 80's or 90's this wouldn't even be brought up. Sports are meant for people with heart and a desire to win.. the people watching sports anymore have become soft and can't respect a proper warning shot...

I guess the warning shot wasn't "proper" since Stakhovsky didn't get the message!! Lol the fanatics are making Federe look even more pathetic that he is!

Ball wasn't even coming at him. Stachkovsky just went too close to the net and crouched at the same time. He overreacted.

If he didn't move forward and crouched, the ball would land at his feet. You can't blame Fed for Stakhovsky panicking running towards the ball with his head. That's why Fed was looking at him, thinking, WTF?

Nadal has been the victim of poor sportmanship from other players. Let's not forget Gonzalez serving right into Nadal's stomach at US Open 2009 before the match had started, and Gaudio's provocation at Monte Carlo 2006.

Poor Rafa. He is always the victim in those situations.

Don't forget Rosol deliberately getting in the way of Nadal at Wimbledon 2012, and Malisse making fun of Nadal, and Tursunov making fun of Nadal, and Soderling imitating Nadal on-court, and Djokovic imitating Nadal on-court.

I found YouTube videos of both:

Gonzalez:

Gaudio:

Gonzalez doesn't seem on purpose or very harmfull, but Gaudio seems really mad, shouting at Nadal.

I don't understand Spanish, so could someone please translate?

He's won it more times than Edberg himself. That tells you everything. I wonder why they haven't renamed the award, since Federer is definitely the role model now.

Why would he need to apologize? It was a fairly played point. Maybe Fed thought he was going to cover the down the line, and tried to hit behind him. I swear, sometimes it seems like people on this board doesn't even play tennis.

I don't think there's any award in any professional sport that has been renamed to/for an existing player. I haven't seen one, as sport awards are usually named after a retired player. Hell, the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship award was only renamed after he retired in 1996, after he last won it in 1995. Beside these awards are named after the people the embody the spirit of what the award is, and not necessarily the amount of time it's won. Federer could win the award 5 more times for all we know, but if Stefan Edbergs standards of sportmanship excellence is still a higher bar than Federer's, then why should it be renamed. Conversely, if people who governs these awards feel that Federer set a level of standard to be strive for, then it wouldn't surprise me they'd name it after him.
