Federer: Year End No.1 2008 IF............

Lotto

Professional
I was just on the ATP website earlier and I saw the draw had been done so I pulled it up.

It says:

SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS ATP RANKING POINTS
Each Round Robin Match Win – 20 ATP Race points – 100 South African Airways ATP Ranking points
Semifinal Win – 40 ATP Race points – 200 South African Airways ATP Rankings points
Final Win – 50 ATP Race points – 250 South African Airways ATP Rankings points
Undefeated Champions – 150 ATP Race points – 750 South African Airways ATP Ranking points

So that means that if Federer goes undefeated he will get:

60 (20 x 3 for group)
40 (Semi win)
50 (Final win)
150 (Undefeated Champion)

If that is correct and Federer does pull it off he will finish the year on 1341 points. Exactly 6 points ahead of Nadal and YEAR END NO.1 for the 5th straight year.

The question is:

With Murray and an in-form Simon in his group can he pull it off and still have a chance of beating Sampras 6 in a row record? (That is if my calculations are correct)

umm i think u must have calculated wrong.. it is already stated by the atp website that it is impossible for federer to regain number 1 this year. If u didnt do ur math wrong then it is because u added 50 points for tounament winner and then 150 for undefeated winner, so u added 200 points, if he is an undefeated winner i dont think he gets the 50 points for being the winner, the 150 is inplace of the 50.

did you factor in that hes losing the points from last year's TMC?

I'm talking about the race. It's impossible for him to catch him in the rankings, obviously, but unless I mis-calculated (I probably did, I'm crap with this points stuff) then I thought he could catch him in the Year End Race. Any confirmations?

YEC = Ranking by the time it reaches the end of the year. No it's not possible. Very possible for him to catch Nadal at the Australian though.

the race and ranking system at this point in time are identical and is just divided by a factor of 5, the race is basicly what u have done for the year and this is the end of the year, the ranking is what u have done for the last 52 weeks... which is a year and at the end of the year the two represent the same thing, makes sense?? so yea he cannot beat him in race points coz if he can it would mean he can retain YEAR end number 1. which he cannot..

The problem is right now Federer only has 1041 race points. So the highest he can possibly reach is 1191, which is short of Nadal's 1335.

you did the wrong thing when you added additional 150 points to the already 150 points total an undefeated player would get. if you go undefeated it means you'll be able to get a total of 150 (or 750 ranking points) BUT you will NOT get an additional 750 points as a bonus for being undefeated.

Roger Federer knew deep down in his heart that Rafael Nadal has guaranteed his Year-End #1 as soon as Federer lost his SF in Madrid.

Why can't Federer's fans accept the fact that Federer has already lost his Year-End #1?

60+40+50 = 150. If he wins those 5 matches, he wins 150. That's what 'Undefeated Champion' means. You don't get 300 points for not losing. Nadal already secured the Y.E #1

The only way Nadal would not be number one is if he fails a drug test. That`s the only possibility that a player would be stripped out of his points.

Not necessarily, he could do a Henin and request that his points be removed.

It said it here "Undefeated". This is maximum he could get.

I'm telling you that this record won't be broken for a while. The current ATP schedule is simply too tough for #1 to maintain consecutive years. 4 "consecutive" year is already an amazing achievement under the current schedule, IMHO.

Thanks for clearing that up. The max he can get is 150 points. Not 150 then an extra 150 for undefeated. My mistake.

One more question:

On the South African Airways ATP Rankings Federer lost all of his masters cup points from last year which has dropped him from like 5810 to 5205. Why is this?

The MC points are dropped exactly one week before the MC. This is why Ferrer fell abruptly in the rankings on Monday.

To be no.1 right after the AO Federer should win the Masters Cup, win the AO and Nadal lose in the QF or earlier at the AO.
