Federer's 2010 job: Breaking/equaling even more records.

G.O.A.T.
There's quite some records in sight for Federer this year. I'll sum them up.

Code:
1. winning 4 AO's equaling Andre Agassi
2. winning 7 Wimbledons, equaling Pete Sampras
3. Making 8 consecutive finals in a single Slam, equaling Ivan lendl's 8 US Open's.
4.Getting the Open era record of 6 US open titles, which he currently shares with Sampras and Connors
5. Equaling or breaking Agassi's 17 Masters series titles
6. Reaching 11 consecutive Slam finals, breaking his own record of 10
7. Breaking Sampras' record of 287 weeks as world number 1. Federer stands at 264 currently
8. Equaling Sampras' record of 6 year end number 1's.
9. Equaling Borg and Sampras' shared record of 8 consecutive years with at least 1 Slam win
10. Equaling Sampras' record of 5 YEC titles

Which records would you see as a main goal, or strike you as particularly important. Also, are there any records you think are totally uninteresting? Let's discuss..

If he does well at the Slams then he'll achieve quite a few of these potential records that you mention. So his focus should be to go as far as he can at each of the slams. Breaking the masters record is kind of pointless. Nadal will own that record one day for sure, given that he is only 1 or 2 shields behind Fed and he is only 23.

Well as far as important records go, equalling Agassi's 4 AO,breaking Agassi's 17 MS, equalling Sampras' 7 Wimbledons and breaking Sampras' 287 weeks of being #1 are the most important ones.

If he accomplishes any other records to me is just gravy.

Also I would love Fed to win RG by beating Nadal.

It's hard to believe Agassi won more Australian Open titles than any man in the open era. He skipped that event every year from 1987 until 1995. Overall, Andre only went to the AO 9 years and skipped/missed it 11 years. A guy like Federer was only 27 during the last AO, but has already played the same amount of career matches there as Andre did threw age 36.(Age he retired)

Agassi career at AO- 9 years, 53 matches, 4 titles and 48-5 record.
Federer career at AO- 10 years, 54 matches, 3 titles and 47-7 record.

nice list. :)

Nb: about the 10th record, it's currently shared by lendl [1981-82, 1985-87] and sampras [1991, 1994, 1995-97, 1999]. i'd like roger to get that one too...

I think his mind is set on breaking Sampras' weeks at #1 record (7) most of all right now.
In order to do so, he'll have to get (at least) one other GS title this year, so he'll have to accomplish either your (1) or (2) goal to accomplish that. Those look like the most likely-to-accomplish ways of doing so to me.

Agassi was a great player. Having said that, 2 of his AO wins had some of the softest draws in slam history. He beat Clement in 2001 (never faced a top 10 player that year) and Schuttler in 2003 (never faced a top ten player, and only one top 20 player - grosjean). For me, federer is already better than agassi at every slam but the French -- and even there its close.

In order of importance:
1. Tying Sampras' 7 Wimbledons
2. Getting a 6th US Open
3. 2nd French Open
4. 4th Australian Open

Huh? How is Agassi better at the French? Didn't Federer make 4 finals, and 5 semifinals there?

I actually would put Fed far above Agassi at the FO, and I don't think it's even close.

Glad I'm not the only one. Agassi has a better record at the AO but that's about it. I think the old surface on which both Federer and Agassi won their titles would have been better for Federer than the new one as well. Federer is just overall a far better player. I just hope he can be as good as Agassi aged 36.

This would be my order of importance:
2. winning 7 Wimbledons, equaling Pete Sampras
8. Equaling Sampras' record of 6 year end number 1's.

My list order of probable records:

Yes, I know about those numbers. Your comment is fair. But Agassi made 3 finals himself and really it boils down to a gut impression for me. I feel like Agassi was more solid on clay. Fed would no doubt win matches against Agassi on clay.

Okay, fair enough. I don't really agree, particularly, since Federer just came up short against one ridiculously strong and consistent claycourter, while Agassi.. Well met a lot of different people on the road. Federer's made so many finals at the Masters Series as well as at Roland Garros, and they were all against Nadal, except for that one against Soderling.

I think his mind is set on breaking Sampras' weeks at #1 record (7) most of all right now.

I think his mind is almost exclusively set on the 4 slams each year, as it has been for a few years now. Anything else is just gravy....

As for the weeks at #1, it's likely to fall without needing a GS title at all, in fact, it's almost a done deal. Not that another slam or two would hurt.

I reckon he has a shot at most of those, but the ones I'm not so sure on are:

6. Reaching 11 consecutive Slam finals, breaking his own record of 10 (he has every chance I feel, but if he comes up against Del Potro in a semi it could go right down the line).
8. Equaling Sampras' record of 6 year end number 1's (too much hard court competition post-Wimbledon for him to achieve this one I think).
10. Equaling Sampras' record of 5 YEC titles (sadly I feel 2009 was his best chance of equalling the record).
