More great scheduling from Roger. Monte Carlo isn't mandatory, so this way, he'll give himself a full three weeks between Miami and the clay season.

Yep! I fully understand him skipping MC. No longer mandatory so why bother. Estoril fits in perfectly.

Guys, he plans on playing Estoril because he's obligated to plan 5 500 tournaments. he's not obligated to play Monte carlo. That's why he plans that way. He's never gonna play all those tournaments. He'll play maybe 12 or something.

that's new to me

afaik it's just that four events do count in the rating (one after the uso) and if he doesn't participate in enough events he gets zero-pointers.

I agree. He'll almost always pulls out of 2-3 events a year.

Is Federer not playing the Kooyong exhibition?

He is defending champion, for what that's worth (no ATP points, but there are usually quality players).

Weird to see that Fed won't play Monte Carlo, but he did win Estoril in 2008 so he must have weighed the options there.

He can always ask for a Wildcard into Monte Carlo, like he did this year, if he's feeling up for it.

Roger is doing the right thing here, he needs to cut out as much play as he can.

As for Nadal, I hope he does cut out the playing so much. He needs to focus on recapturing FO and Wim.

in theory, he has to play four 500 tournaments, but monte-carlo, even if it awards 1000 pts to the winner, is counted as one of the results for this '500 category' (yes, it's one of those new implementations in the ranking system, to make it more understandable for the fans).
besides, estoril is only a 250 tournament...

maybe he plays there because it fits well his schedule (3 weeks off after miami) and because he liked the place and the tournament last time he played (and won) it ? ;)

(Nadal_Freak told me it was one of the best places in latin america !)

but seriously, even if i only approached it at night when we went from sintra to lisboa, it appeared to be a very pleasant place !
did you already go at the tournament ?

For parts of his schedule which are not obligatory, Federer has said that he prefers not to commit, so he does not become the bad guy if he has to withdraw. He prefers to not promise anything upfront, then closer to the date let the tournament director know whether he is going to enter. This way there are no hard feelings or false promises. Tournament directors are also all too happy to leave a place in the draw open until the last moment if Federer has indicated he may still enter. So although Monte-Carlo has not been penciled in, it has not been ruled out either.

Actually if conditions in RG are the same in 2010 as this year, Estoril will be better prep then Monte Carlo.
