I'm trying collect DVDs of all the best matches Federer's played since turning pro. The obviously ones are the Grand Slam finals and Masters Cup finals. Now I need your suggestions on what other matches are of Federer's best? In areas like level of the opposition, quality of shots making, close encounters where he had to comeback to save his day and maybe some dramas during the match. In other words matches that are worth remembering.

Two matches on top of my head are: 2001 Wimbledon 1/8 final against Sampras and 2005 Miami final against Nadal.

I actually think Federers round robin match with Nadal at last years (2006) Masters Cup in Shanghai is one of the more entertaining matches. It is two sets of some of the best baseline tennis you will ever see, just some very high quality stuff. It was also great to see how much the match meant to Federer.

I think the whole match was only around an hour long, but there isn't a dull moment. I must be crazy, but I can get pretty bored watching some "classic" 5-set matches.

2005 Indian Wells Final vs Lleyton Hewitt *
2005 Miami Final vs Rafa Nadal
2006 Italian Open Final vs Nadal

2003 Wimbledon SF vs Andy Roddick *
2005 Australian Open SF vs Marat Safin.

*Great opposition, but just was better that day.

The Roddick demolition at the AO 2007 semifinal (I think). Last two sets where the crowd was simply in awe of what Federer was producing..... I think Mary Carillo remarked that there was a "buzz" in the air (not normal chatter and applause between good points), and the crowd simply could not believe what they were saying.

The Santoro match at the US Open (2006/5 I think) was a fun one as well.

Wasn't thats the semi final match actually? Yes I remember that one, lots of amazing shots from both sides and Federer was always dominating. It was short but very high intensity. I guess you are not crazy it was much more entertaining than a lot of 5 set matches.

    Good suggestions MEAC

2005 Indian Wells Final vs Lleyton Hewitt - I don't recall much of that match but was it the one with an 45 shot rally? Mercedes play of the month?
2006 Italian Open Final vs Nadal (Federer almost had it, almost)
2003 Wimbledon SF vs Andy Roddick *(Nice one, this match was as good as the final if not better)
2005 Australian Open SF vs Marat Safin.(Classic match for Safin fans)

I don´t think the 2005 Miami final should be in the list. The first 3 sets were good but the 4th and 5th were not interesting. Nadal was an unexperienced player that couldn´t handle 5 sets on hardcourts at that level and he was out of gas in the last 2 sets. There was some great tennis in the first 3 sets but not in the whole match.

Thanks zagor for a very comprehensive list.

I almost forgot about this year's Hamburg final. A must have for Federer fans.
