Federer's best performances at the FO

Tournament-round or individual matches?

Tournament-round I'd say 2011. Individual matches...SF 2011, F 2009, 4R
2006...something like that? I don't think he has had any standout performances since 2011 there, although some of his wins in 2015 were pretty clean until Wawrinka outplayed him in the QF.

He lost a set to Monfils, and a good chance he would have lost the match without the delay. Federer was very bad in RG 2015, and no surprise he ended losing to his pigeon in straight sets. His best run since 2011 was in 2019, and it isn't even close.

Rare hard agree.

2011 Semi v Novak, but only because the courts and balls played faster than ever, a.k.a. Fed getting helped again by his friend above.
If we're talking about Fed himself, I'd say it was 2007.

Moya 2005 4R
Berdych 2006 4R
Ancic 2006 QF
Soderling 2009 F
Djokovic 2011 SF

are the 5 that come to mind first (in no particular order)

Considering I have only watched the Fedal 2005-08 and 2011 SF-F and 2009 match ext highlights with delp Potro,

2006 F wasn't really that good.

I think I will choose 2007 F ,2005 SF, 2011 SF as better matches

2005 was explosive more than 2007,2011 which were pretty good controlled aggression matches from Federer. 2007 is probably the only clay match after Rome 2006 I think where his BH actually held.

2011 SF is great but Djokovic poses different problems than Nadal and Federer came up with a plan for that.

2005 is little too erratic so it's between 2011 SF and 2007 F

I will probably call them equals. 2007 F was still pretty much up for air going into 4th because it really felt Federer should have won the first 2.

2011 SF is probably the best he has been in the clutch department.

But of course none of these matches come close to Rome 2006 and Monte Carlo 2006.

I was really impressed with his 2011 form. I've always thought it was between 2006 and 2007, but the way he played the SF and 1st set up until that missed drop shot at 5-2 in F, has to be up there. I really thought he had Nadal the way he came out all-guns-blazing in that first set.

2019 was very impressive considering his long clay break, super underrated though. Best example was the match with Wawrinka imo (didnt watch all)

yeah some huge choke. but a bit unfair on him to have to go through both Djokovic and then Nadal, took a lot outt of you both mentally and physically.

07 and 11 are his non-fail performances against Nadal, 09 QF-F and 11 SF are obviously up there too.

05-06 were the most capable versions but just serious dumbassery against Nadal.

Rafa is lucky Djoker quit down 2 sets love at RG 2006. Djoker was in control.:giggle:

That never gets old. So awesome...
BUT it’s interesting how Djokovic was semi-prophetic here. Nobody has ever played with more belief on clay against Rafa, even if Nadal has been dominant. Nole did come close to slaying Goliath in 2013 and beat Nadal in 2015, though that doesn’t really count in a way given Nadal’s crap form that year...

07 was a fail too from FH side considering his FH
11 was a fail too from 5-2 SP up to losing 8 games in a row.

Djoker always had the self-belief. How else are you going to to beat the top guys. However, when a player is young, without major titles and the belief is publicly vocalized toward an already very established player it can come off as arrogant to some fans. Self-belief aside, that particular press conference was o_O

I don't think it took anything out of him (physically or mentally), sorry but it's not an excuse. He started out against Nadal with the same game plan that was successful vs Djoker in SF. What happened was that missed dropped shot at 5-2 and he let it get to his head. It's happened many other times ... e.g. USO SF 2011 serving for the match at 40-15, crumbles after that 'junior shot' CC FH return. If only Fed had the Sampras 'killer instinct', he'd have pocketed a few other slams at the expense of Djokodal.

The GOAT debate would have been over by now.He is the best all courter, but he needed a bit of clutchness.

I'd say those two years on aggregate he played about as well as you could expect given Nadal was just physically better. Obviously he did miss some chances both years.

05-06 he could easily physically match Nadal but just moments of pure implosion.
