Federer's best slams

Level of play is Australian Open 2007. Draw wise any of his 2004 slam wins are up there.

Federer's best tennis was at Wimbledon 2005 IMO. Beat peak Hewitt and Roddick back to back although he also did something better in beating peak Murray and Djokovic to win Wimbledon in 2012.

Roddick and Hewitt on grass > Djokovic and Murray on grass. In 2004 both Hewitt and Roddick were playing better IMO. Although I'd say Federer's best Wimbledon form was probably 2005.

Wimbleon 2012 for sure.

Fought hard in his early rounds, beat Djokovic under the roof, beat an inspired Murray to bring out his best tennis.

7th Wimbledon, first ever under a roof, potentially his last slam....Hard earned post-peak and therefore should be regarded as one of his best.

AO 2004 was the best for me.

Also USO 2007, USO 2008 and W 2012. These 4 were the best not only in terms of level of play but also in terms of level of the opposition

What was so great about USO 2008? Federer didn't really kick into form until the last 2 rounds. Djokovic was good but Murray was lackluster. USO 2007 I gree though. Lopez, Roddick, Davydenko and Djokovic is tough draw and all were playing well to great.

What impressed me the most about USO 2007 is that he beat no.5, no.4 and no.3 in back to back matches without dropping a set. And all of them were pretty good HC players.

And USO 2008 impressed me because Fed defended his teritory at the USO vs Nole after losing earlier to him at the AO.

USO 2005 is also a pretty good one. Nalbandian, Hewitt and agassi all of them back to back

W 2004 also impressed me because he showed why he was the no.1 player in the world. He practically distanced himself for good from his generation and later the USO only confirmed it

Hewitt was excellent in that Semi final in 2005. As for 2007 they were all excellent hardcourt players...

USO 08 was good for Federer mentally but that's about it IMO. It was his weakest USO run IMO.

W 2004 was a tough draw; Karlovic, Hewitt, Grosjean and then Roddick. I think Wimbledon 2006 is underrated as a draw, he went through, Gasquet, Berdych, Henman, Ancic and then Nadal.

With Bjorkman in the semis i cannot really call 2006 W a good one

In terms of difficulty, 2004 Australian comes to mind.
He had to overcome several bogie men on his way to the title - Hewitt, Nalbandian, Ferrero, Safin in a row to finish.

AO 2010 he was really impressive, to my mind. And USO 2008; his game was flowing so well in the later rounds, like he hadn't a care in the world.

Basically every other round was a good grasscourter...I said it was underrated. It's not one of his best.

It is one of his best. It was the most stacked draw he's ever faced.

Getting a reprieve in the SF doesn't change the murderer's row first 5 he had of Gasquet-Henman-Mahut-Berdych-Ancic, and following it up by beating Nadal in the final.

Ancic would have been a perfectly challenging SF opponent at Wimbledon.

lol this x1000.

Hewitt is DEFINITELY better than Djokovic on grass at his peak and old man ARod beat Andy.
Roddick and Hewitt were legitimate great grass players - Federer was just that good.

probably the us open 2004 or wimbledon 05. AO07 would come next but he didn't face one of his "biggest" rivals and it looked very easy all tournament long.

if I had to pick one, I'd say wimbledon 2005. just incredible tennis and let no one else having even the slightest chance, not even his biggest rivals and the best players aside him at that time.

Winning the French Open in 2009 was his best slam in regards of mental toughness!
Knowing that Nadal was out and this would probably prove to be his only chance in his life to win the title, the media being on his back about it for the whole tournament, the fans expecting him to win it and most importantly himself probably knowing all of that and wanting it so bad after losing in the finals on numerous accounts.
In addition he beat Haas in 5 after it looked mighty gloom and also Del Petro in 5, the guts he showed was amazing to watch for 2 weeks.Brilliant stuff!

In terms of playing level:

AO - 05>07>04>06(cept the 5th set against Safin where Fed was struggling physically, rest else was tennis from another planet)

RG 06>05

Wim 06>05>03

USO 06>05>04 (USO 04 final is THE highest level for a player ever seen at ANY slam match IMO)

A case can be made for AO 05 to be Fed's highest level at a slam(atleast a HC slam) ever, just hard luck he didn't take home the trophy. Not sure why Fed wasn't that great at AO 06, kinda puzzling.

I listed out the tournaments that Fed lost in too cause sometimes a player plays his best tennis and still loses because the opponent edged him or just bad luck.

For me, peak Fed ended at AO 07. Thought I'd mention it.

Also I've never seen Fed having as much pure fun and just showing off his dazzling strokes as he did in AO 05. I saw just about everything from Fed in that tournament and it was pure joy to watch(cept the result of the SF ofcourse)

Good choice. But no mention of Wim 06(or for that matter any version of Wim)?

Yeah, Wim 05 and 06 I think was his best performance. He didn't have much trouble winning those 2 titles. I remember Gasquet gave him a scare in 2006 Halle, and they met again at Wimbledon where Roger beat him soundly. Bjorkman was crushed by him in the semifinal and after the match he was asked who was the better grass court player between Fed and Sampras and he said Fed.

BTW I think Fed looked the best in AO 05 in terms of movement, stroke play, his beautiful jersey and matching sky blue shoes and his hair looked just beautiful. Oh yea baby he was badass in that tournament.

Haha thanks for sharing that interesting tidbit, that's quite a statement from Bjorkman given that he's a S&V player, Pete's own playing style.

Federer's most impressive slams in terms of play are Wimbledon 2006, US Open 2006 and Australian Open 2007.

In terms of draw probably Australian Open 2004, Wimbledon 2006, US Open 2004, US Open 2007.
