Federer's Commencement speech at Dartmouth

Universities should eliminate honorary doctorates. They should be earned. It also prevents problems when political and social winds change and suddenly the person falls out of favor.

Granting these doctorates, even honorary ones, is not appropriate. And why must it be a doctorate, the highest academic achievment? Why not simply a baccalaureate?
Fed himself says he has never been on a college campus in his life and that the only reason he is there is because his agent's kids attend the school.
If the college wishes to recognize Fed's philanthropic work, it can be done with an award and without conferring a degree. Degrees must be earned in an academic environment.

Ladies and Gentlemen another daft and contrived comment with the only aim to get more manufactured reactions. This thread would have been already moved without these type comments.

That‘s because it wasn’t rehearsed and real. Yawn is the reaction to you and friend’s posts due to being contrived and manufacture.
Don't be silly, he definitely rehearsed the speech and thank goodness - who knows what the captive audience would have gotten otherwise.

Destroying your credibility like a pro. The poster made an excellent point, but because it wasn't shining Roger's shoes you suggest it's trolling. Sad.

Fed has never stepped foot on a campus. He says so himself during the speech. Which was rather surprising to hear.
And no other American college has granted him an honorary degree.
So it does raise the question:
Would Fed even be receiving this doctorate if his agent was not tied to Dartmouth?

More contrived reactions by the same group of fake “haters.” I am suppose to belief you are so triggered because Federer gave a speech.

Well duh… Roger never stepped foot on a college campus because he passed on all that to become a professional tennis player. That was his point and he was honored. Boo hoo, I’m so triggered by Federer getting an honorary degree even though his foundation mission is help underprivileged receive a proper education so they can come back to help their communities.

I hope he made a joke about being stumped as to why he was getting a Doctorate, and then awkwardly slapping that chunk of tree and saying "get it?"

The real joke watching “haters” triggered over him getting a honorary degree because according to them he is dumb and don’t contribute anything to society.

Not once did he look down to check his script (if he even had one), suggesting he had more or less memorized a 25-minute speech.
Whether or not his speech was scripted or memorized, some here want us to believe Federer is dumb and don’t contribute anything to society to warrant this honor all because his formal education stopped at 16 to pursue a professional tennis career.

It's an impressive feat - to memorize a 25 - minute script. Public speaking is not a joke.

Individuals with a great talent, or passion, that falls outside of a traditional academic setting should pursue it. Unless someone wants the life experience of going to college, it isn't meant for everyone. It isn't a reflection of intelligence, or future success, it's a good way of keeping millions of kids out of the job market for a few years.

I think Fed was a great choice for giving such a speech - he's a stable, successful human being who did not follow a traditional path. Who could want more out of life?

Obviously he never attended college since he has been playing as a pro since a teenager.
But Fed said he had never even stepped on a campus in his life. That is very odd.
Most people have visited a college campus for any number of reasons. To watch a speaker, sporting event, attend grad ceremony of a relative, etc.

You seem to be lacking a formal education.

Yes, just like your beloved Fed.

In order to play The Rogers Cup a player sort of had to go on a campus.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is BS looks like. This forum user is trying to make everyone believe that Roger is too dumb to have given the commencement address to students of Dartmouth because he lacked a formal education and has never been on college campus.

Can't wait for Djokovic's speech at University of Phoenix.
Funny jab by Djokovic speaks more languages and is an avid reader.

Love Fed, but he doesn't read books by his own admission.

Seems like Djokovic is the most educated out of the big 3,so expect a Harvard speech after he retires.
