Federer's game is still too good for the pros except Nadal and Murray...

That's the strange thing abotu it, and this sentiment was stated in one of Yahoo's sports blogs as well:

Federer still has far too much game for anyone else in the world except for Nadal and Murray, and reports of his demise are woefully premature. He remains one of the finest players the world has ever seen, but this period of his career is an opportunity to showcase his true mettle.

If Federer can find a way to conquer the mental demons which seem to grip him every time he is forced to up his tempo against Nadal or Murray, it would be one of the most notable achievements in a glittering career that has produced 13 Grand Slam titles.

And more importantly, for tennis, it would rescue a magnificent rivalry from turning into a one-way ticket to predictability.

So I thought about it, and it really is the truth. The three losses Fed suffered this year came from Murray and Nadal. That's it.

In his previous 3 tournaments the set tallies went:
Doha: In three matches only lost a set to Murray (and lost the game)
AO: Lost 2 sets to Thomas Berdych, but straight setted everyone else. Lost to Nadal in the finals
Indian Wells: Lost 1 close set to Gonzalez but straight-setted everyone else. Lsot ot Murray in the semis.

Even with Federer's decreased movement compared to his in-form form of 05-07 and even 08 (showcased at Indian Wells), Federer still has enough consistency, gas on the forehand etc. to beat every player except Nadal and Murray. And he can beat them too if he puts his head on again.

I think Fed still has a few years good tennis in him, but I do believe that more players will believe they can beat him now. However, who knows who's star will rise in the next two years...... a new Fed for all we know...

I agree with the OP...People on this forum and the media are VERY fickle!! I remember just after a close 5 set loss in wimbledon everybody started saying Federer will not win another GS again...his career is over blah blah blah...and immediately after winning USO, the same people started kissing his ass again and claiming how he was the GOAT...

Again everyone forgets and underestimates Djokovic, who is the only one, beside Nadal, to beat Federer on a GS tournament since 2005.

^I never rule Djoker out. I picked him to win the Masters Cup, even though he had a bad second half to the season.

this is hardly a revelation.

anyone with half a brain and a hint of objectivity will acknowledge Federer is currently the best player on the planet bar two particular players.

And you needed a Yahoo sports blog to make you realise that?

Can't blame them though. Djokovic lack of effort recently is the reason he is being forgotten.

Well, Djokovic recently won TMC and Dubai. That is more than you could say for Federer and even Murray.

He is being forgotten because there is no media hype behind him like you have it for Federer, Muyrray and Roddick. Hence the clueless articles on Yahoo like the one OP is quoting.

True enough. Perhaps that's what's missing right now ( pressure from the media ).

Sure, he won both the TMC and Dubai, but he didn't have to face Federer, Nadal or Murray in the process. Federer and Nadal both have winning records over him, and Murray is quickly catching up, beating him in their last two matches. Djokovic has enjoyed draws free of Nadal/Federer/Murray. That is how he won Rome last year too. All credit to him for taking those opportunities, but still, I doubt he'd have won Dubai or TMC with having to play one of the Fed/Nadal/Murray trio.

What you doubt is irrelevant. We don't know who would have won if he faced Nadal, Federer or Murray in one of those tournaments. It is also irrelevant who he needed to play to win titles. It is not his fault if some other players lost earlier or are injured.

The fact is that he beat all three players H2H multiple times. He is still ranked above Murray even after points for last year's AO and IW are of the books and there is a reason for that. Rankings don't lie.

So dismissing and ignoring Djokovic like OP and Yahoo did is wrong.

Here my little alternate analysis --

Federer is grace at work..fluid movement, great array of shots/angles, almost giving an impression of least physical effort

Nadal is complete opposite to Federer ..highly industrious style of game, extreme fitness, highly motivated with a never give up sorta mental approach

Now, most ppl ask of Federer to get that mental attitude of Nadal...but that's neither Federer's mental makeup or his style and who ask of it really don't get it...IMHO..if the results were reversed, are the same ppl to ask Nadal to develop a smoother/fluid game?

You haven't seen my topic, I'm still a big fan of Djokovic?

It's just that as of late, he has not been impressing me. I still love his game and him on the tour, but as a player he's not going through against the very best. He's having trouble getting through Roddick (who is an excellent player in his own right), how much more would he have trouble with Murray/Nadal/Fed?

I don't underestimate Djokovic, I always kind of worry when Fed has to play him, and always pick Djokovic over Nadal in hard courts, but this topic is about threats to Federer as of now. And as of now, Djokovic isn't there.

And Djokovic is being forgotten because he's not posting the results. He won the TMS which is awesome, but has been fading ever since. He won in Rome, but there wasn't too many people there to challenge him and he just lost to Roddick again in a dull performance.

When he starts doing things he'll get the attention. Until then it's Fed/Murray/Nadal

Yep, I think many people are being stupid, writing off Fed so soon. It's not the end of the world for him just because he loses to Nadal and Murray. I think he's still gonna be around for a while, and he's gonna win, just not as much as he used to.

IF, and that's a big if, Fed finds a way to beat Nadal and Murray (hint, get a coach... or someone to help him with mental conditioning), then I think it'll be really interesting; a three horse race.

Nah... Fed just needs to get on a roll again..

Ok, ok, he has had a slow down in his efforts. But everyone is thinking. What if he gets on a roll again...

I think he knows himself well enough to know, that what people say on a message board means nothing. And when he finally switches on, he will definately switch on....

You will always find a way to bring Djok into a conversation. It's amazing.

he doesn't like that djokovic isn't considered able to beat federer..nevermind that he hasn't beaten him for several months..because that all must be a bunch of crap.

i like djokovic, but right now including him in the conversation with nadal federer and murray may not be completely justified..

I quiete agree qith the title of the thread. i mean, some people like to believe that he´s not dominating any more because hes much worse than he was 2-3 years ago. The truth is, apart from Nadañ and Murray (not proved at Grand Slams), he still beats everybdy when he is on form, and still pretty easily. So, now imagine Nadal wasn´t around o Nadal was still the clay courter he was back in 2004-2005. Federer would have probably the last wimbledon, 1-2 french opens and tha las AO. thus, he would have more than 14 Grand Slams and you would say he is the GOAT and bla bla bla. So please! Stop saying nonsense, Federer destroy the same weak opposition as before, the difference is now he has to deal with Nadal and Murray.

Ehhh well. Only one other player in how long has beaten Fed at the slams, not named Nadal? Djoker. And that was over a year ago.

Beating Fed in non-slams doesnt mean a whole lot. Murray still hasnt beaten Fed when it mattered most. Fed pistol whipped Djoker and Murray at the USO and made it look routine.

Murray can beat Fed at all the smaller tournaments he wants. He hasnt proven he can beat Fed and when a slam is on the line

I disagree, Djokovic has figured him out. Simon beat him too. Roddick almost beat him again, many players can beat Federer.

Well now after Miami, Djokovic has to be be added to Nadal and Murray on this list. Like it or not.

Murray will over take Novak shortly.

I somewhat stand by my original topic.

The only game Federer brought to that semifinal was mardy-fish like. When I think about it, when Djokovic beat Fed in Cincinatti, Federe had over 40 errors there too! I do give props to Djokovic, cause he adapted very well and played consistent. But Fed absolutely self-destructed there.

They both hit as hard as the other, it's just Djokvoic has the legs to get to Fed's putaways. I think that worries Fed, and he shanks the ball trying to blow Djokovic off the court.

Still wont admit that your thread failed miserably even after spanking Djokovic gave to Federer in Miami. Oh well, let's repeat again. Maybe you will get it second time:

Miami: Lost 1 close set to Roddick but straight-setted everyone else. Lost to Djokovic in the semis.

Also Djokovic and Federer never played in Cincinnati.

No, not really. "Grace" doesn't smash rackets, toss water bottles and refuse to shake hands with the umpire. His "movement" is deteriorating. Most of his errors are caused by mispositioning which happens due to slow motion. His "array of shots" translates into 47 UFE in a three-setter or over 60 UFE in a five-setter. Agree with the "least physical effort". Especially in the decisive sets. He is naturally declining, and no switch of mentality will stop this process.
