Federer's illness might ruin his season...

I really hope I'm wrong, but after reading everything about Federer's 'lung infection' I think it's much more serious than most people expect at the moment.

It might take six weeks for him to recover, which is serious bad news for his game, especially the footwork. During Indian Wells/Miami he won't be 100 % and I can't see him starting the clay season fully fit.

All this will completely freeze his momentum and he'll be struggling with form issues come FO/Wimbledon... :( (2008 all over again)

Pneumonia, bronchitis.... these, according to my mother, a doctor, are probably what he means by lung infection. It shouldn't damage someone for 10 months, especially with good medical treatment as I'm sure Federer has

Federer wasn't struggling with form issues at Wimbledon 2008.

You can't say, unless you were the doctor who he saw. Lung infections can be recovered from in 5-7 days. Unless he has something like pleurisy he should be okay for IW.

I won't jump the gun just yet, got to see how he performs when he comes back from it before contemplating whether it might ruin his season,

I don't see why it should. He could just have a cold. Let's see how he does in Indian Wells, Miami, clay season before writing him off.

That's probably true^. This is also true; Nadal had 0 health (mental or physical) issues in the 5th set at Wimbledon 07 and the final of Madrid 09 and the FO 09 and any USO or YEC.

I saw Federer playing great at Wimbledon 2008.

it wont be 2008 all over again i can assure you of that..a lung infection does not make you physically weak.. for the most part federer will have difficulty breathing a bit.

i think he'll be ok, but i mean, he's confident..he just came of a gs win..so i dont see like a huge slump.

He's just got an illness. With proper recovery it shouldn't derail anything. It's not a tennis related problem at all and it's even possible that the extra time off will help him during the meat of the season.

It's completely different situation from 2008. Lung infection is bacterial infection, antibiotic should work unless it is extremely rare. Mono is viral infection, that doesn't have effective treatment - existing treatment is for symptom only. Mono takes long time and rest.

Its all in fun!
Hope this illness is not serious. Fed is a bit weak in the respiratory system. This stuff can break you down cuasing permanent damage.

Let`s be clear. If Federer has a cold, fever or any sorts of illness it is obviously the right move to skip Dubai. If it was a grandslam he would have played through it but why risk anything for a 500 point tournament. There are more important tournaments to come and a bit of rest before the master series events isn`t that bad

At this point it definitely looks like he'll have less practice than he would normally have and that's not ideal.

If he will be able to feel physically fresh on court I think he'll definitely play IW, regardless of lacking practice; he'll want to get his groove back by playing matches. In the worst case scenario he may skip both IW and Miami, but later those comes clay anyway, so he may start anew.

Either way, there is no need to exaggerate. These things are a part of sports anyway.

"He has got a lung infection," said ATP circuit official Stephen Duckett. "He saw a doctor and he was advised not to play for a fortnight."

According to the ATP's website Federer, who picked up the infection last week, will return in the ATP World Tour Masters at Indian Wells in March.

Common lung infections include bronchitis and pneumonia. Infections such as whooping cough and tuberculosis have been largely confined recently in the United States, although they still occur occasionally.

Probably one of the first two.

Bronchitis is the east serious of all of them and based on this quote from Federer, I think it's more likely bronchitis than pneumonia.

"On Wednesday I couldn't get up any more," Federer said. "Breathing was difficult. I feel I am fine now but I am still very tired and slow, and the doctors say it's serious enough that I don't play for two weeks. And I can't take any chances. If it's treated properly, everything should go away fairly quickly. I'm hoping to be back for Indian Wells [which starts on 10 March] but there is no guarantee. It may be possible, it may be not. I will do some tests and we will see how it is."

Folks, jeez, every article says he'll be out for a fortnight...that's two weeks. It essentially means he's resting up for Indian Wells, the biggie. Why wouldn't we want him to do that? He wouldn't miss that for the world, given the Hit for Haiti event, all his peers who'll be there and, don't forget, Larry Ellison on his butt (not someone you'd want on YOUR butt).

Fed will be fine!

Edit: By the way, he can't exactly say he's feeling super good right now and that he'll be at Indian Wells no problem when he's trying to gracefully exit from the Dubai tournament...

He said himself he feels fine, if it was serious he would not feel fine!
He said that to give people reassurance that it is nothing too serious. What is he supposed to say, "I might not make it, I am on my death bed!" lol :)

Oh so this will be the excuse for when Fed fails to win the CYGS in 2010. He had pneumonia/lung infection and then the lingering side effects stayed in the body for months and all. Smith happens.

I can't believe it. Fed has just won the AO for the first time since 2007 and his 16th slam to boot. Yet Fed fans are out there whining about a minor infection as if it's the end of the world!!! And after that, they'll claim that Rafa's injuries are being blown out of proportion... Unreal

Federer got an infection when there's no tennis but during off court visiting Africa. However, Rafa claimed injury right after a GS loss. BIG difference.

The difference is that you Fed fans panic like toddlers dropped by their moms at nursery school about something extremely insignificant compared to an injury. "It might ruin his season" , a bad cough? Rofl, listen to yourselves. I don't want to hear any sarcasm about Rafa's injuries after seeing Fed fans pull a stunt like this.

I'm not panicking but how do you know for sure it isn't serious? No one know. That wasn't my point anyway. You are trying to compare Fed's infection to Rafa's knee problem which is silly. Rafa's pattern was always claiming injury AFTER a loss. Federer's problems comes from random stage throughout his career, which sounds more geniune.

I don't think Fed's 'lung infection' is 'that' serious either. Could well be just a common super-infection after a cold/influenza, happens to about all of us once in a while. Rather see him bolting out from Dubai for this reason than from IW/Miami.

If Fed wasn't struggling he wouldn't have lost to Nadal. Fed is better than Nadal. 16 >> 6.

Nonsense. Nadal ended up being the deserved winner over there, whatever the reason for that. He apparently was the better player on that occasion. Give credits to whom deserves it!

now you will hear the *******s use this whenever he gets spanked this year "remember how ill he was in february, he had this vicious cold".

silly thread, remember Haas had H1n1 late last year but seems to be doing fine. everybody gets sick from time to time even the so called "GOAT"

Federer's movement goes on and off. This seems a good reason to go off again. Don't expect him to put too much effort into his footwork at the hardcourts anymore. That'll ruin his chances in IW and Miami, but don't worry, coming the FO he'll be fine and make the final or something again.

Well what we should be concerned about is that our top two players are injured/ill. It will take a great deal from our expectations as to what will happen this season. Who could take their place for any length of time? The way the field looks at the moment I can't help feeling depressed. Please come back soon Rafa and Rog because you both set a standard for the players to work towards and make the game that much more exciting

Federer wasn't struggling with form issues at Wimbledon 2008.

I was watching the 08 final the other day for the first time and I thought he was off form. He was shanking alot of forehands and could not hit a flat or topspin backhand down the line to save his life even though Nadal was giving him that shot all day. I think he hit one in the final set but generally Fed's backhands down the line were well within the sideline (usually between sideline to center area). Some of this might have been Nadal's topspin but he was camping on that cross court backhand from Fed all match long so it was clear he had no fear of Fed zinging one down the line off his backhand side. Had Fed had this shot, I dont think Nadal would have been able to tee off on his forehand returns of Fed's backhand. Nadal was basically able to play on half a court because of this.

Considering this, its amazing that Fed was able to make that match as close as it was as he was being so overpowered on one wing. Fed was surviving on his serve and forehand. I did not see this in the AO. I think players like Murray went into their Fed match hoping to do the same thing just to have their strategy fall apart once Fed started hitting those backhands down the line.

I think it will make his season. He's probably exagerating the illness to avoid the US hardcourt season. He doesn't have all that many points to defend there and he could use the time to rest up and prepare for the clay, and the crux of his season: Roland Garros.

Fed used illness to avoid events several times last year that served no purpose to his Grand Slam preparations, and the lung infection may be another instance of same.

He didn't play any better at Wimbledon 2009 and nobody says that he was out of form then. That's because he won.
The fact that his backhand was weak in the match against Nadal has A LOT to do with the way Nadal hits to it.
I did not see this in the AO.
Really? I saw that again in the match against Andreev, who uses the same top spin and gave Federer a lot of trouble. I wonder how could this happen, since Federer was in such a good form at the Australian Open...

First round is not very telling.
Federer also struggled with his backhand (and forehand) at the beginning against Davydenko who isn't exactly known to hit with a lot of spin.

It's all a matter of form on the day.

The difference in Federer's level of the first and the last two rounds of the Australian Open is huge.
