This is not to knock Fed so you can take it easy *******s LOL....

But wanted to know what "sensible" people thought of Federers play today?

I thought he played like crap in the first. He picked it up later but, he still couldn't move very well because of his toddler-tight shorts.

Disgustingly bad the first and most of the second. picked it up in the tiebreaker, and stole all of Ginepri's confidence and just steamrolled from there. Ginepri seemed to be having problems and likely tanked that third set. Fed better pick it up.

Though that was an ordinary ginepri. This Ginepri was painting the lines, possibly a new improved Ginepri, hopefully he stays this way.

He played really bad, he would have lost to any other higher ranked player, sad but true, a really scary moment for Fed fans.

He was lucky to be playing Ginepri, who gives up easily.
What's with those black tight shorts anyhow? :-?

Despite of the result I think he played much better against Simon than he did today. He also made a lot of UE against Simon but played some brilliant points and games. The difference is Simon is a more consistent player than Ginepri and could take benefit of it even though Fed played better that day.
Fed´s game from the baseline isn´t reliable, it´s too error-prone right now.
Any player who is consistent from the baseline and doesn´t make UE can trouble Fed the way he´s playing now.
I was amazed at how little Ginepri had to do to put himself in the situation of serving for the match. I can´t say Ginepri played well in the first 2 sets to be honest and he was looking tired in the start of the 2nd set, completely done in the 3rd.

He seemed lethargic out there today. Ddin't move very well. Backhands, forehands were off. Don't know what else to say except that he should ahve lost. He played really crappy.

I didn't see most of the match, but Federer looked like he was moving slower than usual during the parts I did see. Ginepri's movement was nonexistant in the 3rd set.

He didn't seem to be playing too well in the first and second. And in the third, Ginepri just seemed to die out.

If this is the way Fed will be playing...Im very doubtful about him even passing the third round at the US Open

sub-par movement and alot of UE's on the backhand....other have said it, his baseline game suddenly lacks all confidence. I think if he gets his movement back, the UE's will drop. He just seems to be reacting slowly to a fair number of balls. When he gets there and plants both feet, he hits great shots. He looked today a little like he looked at the AO which is surprising because I thought he moved well throughout the clay and grass seasons.

It was a sad performance. If I had never heard of Federer and was watching him for the first time, I'd have thought he was a top 30 player at best.

I am almost sure this must be a typo. How could any member of this forum not have heard of Federer and certainly one with HOF status. Probably you are talking about Ginepri. I think he made it far into the FO this year. But it is not a player you often hear about or whose matches are broadcasted.

He said "If"
very important word there.

He says IF he had never heard of him. Hypothetically, if he was new to tennis, and watched that match he would have guessed him top 30 at best.

Federer's confidence has been knocked by his loss in Wimbledon.

It is not possible that he played so well previously, and now suddenly can even barely pass the 2nd round.

Basically he better pick it up in Cincy or he'll be out in the second or third round as he plays better players.

As usual, I'm not sure what match most TW posters watched based on the comments.

Federer played poorly but as far as Ginepri--the dude was sick out there, did you guys miss when he threw up? It wasn't because of lack effort that he lost the 3rd set 6-0. I believe he only won one point on Fed's serve in the third, and only a few points total. The guy is a good sport and should be commended for finishing out the match.

Also, Federer looked bad--but the dude made it to the French Final, won Halle and then made it to the Wimbledon final and the hard-court season only just began--I think it's kind of silly to suggest that he isn't going to get it together. He and Nadal are still way ahead of the pack, Federer just hasn't eased into the hard-court season yet because this was his second match of the hard court season. Some of you like to predict his complete and utter demise after every match.

The best time to get a top player is in their first match. Ginepri blew it. Federer will get better as he progresses.

Somebody stop him so Rafa can get #1! Hee hee hee!

i think rafa will be defeated by djokovic mainly because of how dominant novak was at the begining of the hard court season in January but I can def be wrong because Rafa is so damn confident now.

I don't try to predict or forecast matches. Who knew Roddick would withdraw, Ginepri would throw up, and what happened to Kiefer? It gets too crazy for me. But going with the available information, Djokovic isn't playing that well, not just at Wimbledon, but also at Toronto before Murray beat him. I think he's under a new kind of pressure so it will be interesting!

let's see what happens after next match. this was a squeeker, a match roger should have won a bit easier. was obvious the confidence, legs, energy were gone from ginepri after 2nd set.

if fed struggles again in next match, it may not bode well.

a win is a win.

but boy is roger's confidence down. and the fact simon beat him, and ginepri came close, is certainly dissipating - and perhaps completely destroying that air of invincibility. no longer are guys thinking they will lose once they leave the locker room. they're all extremely hungry for a win against roger now.

As a fan of him, I have to admit he was awful.
Did you see his inside out backhand attempt in the net? What can I say? What can you say? Have you seen any other players attemptning something so stupid? He has no focus on the game: bodily is there, mentally somewhere far away from the court.

And he did not win, Ginepri lost it as his own serve dwindled in his last 3 service games in the 2nd set.

The Joker's moment of shine was in January. He can't keep that level up.

I don't think I've seen Federer play so bad in those 1st two sets for a long, long time. Ginepri completely let him off the hook.

When Ginepri served for the match, he hit the first serve of the first point so long, it wasn't anywhere near the box, I knew he wasn't up to the task of serving for the match at that very moment, he just became too tense with the thought of winning - which is a shame for him, not sure what good this will do Ginepri in the long run.

I'll say it again though, Federer does not look right to me from a physical level. It will be interesting to see what he does for the rest of the week.

i agree with laurie
federers level was ahem... horrible
he didnt do anything the 1st 2 sets - only normal description of it is that man lost all his confidence after losing to nadal and he started losing to everyone who is able to do ANYTHING
so theres no point discussing it
remember what pistol pete did in the end of the season when he lost wimby to krajicek
as far as i remember he won cincy, indianapolis, us open and eventually masters cup (not sure about paris)
while after having 2 awful seasons (2001-2002) full of injuries and nothing positive what happenes? king comes to the us open and wins the title defeating agassi in finals. this is proof of greatness and federers performance is laughable

Federer displayed good tennis in the 3rd set. I know Ginepri was pretty much out of the match by then, but still, Roger finally looked like he gained some confidence. A lot less UFes, and more precise tennis. I just hope he can maintain that level of playing in the next matches (hopefully there would be more than one).

first and foremost I'm a Federer fan and I have to call a spade a spade. His game has taken a slight dip but his confidence is at an all time low while ranked number 1. He doesn't look like he wants to be out there. It seems like even Masters Series events aren't important for him to care anymore and that's usually the first sign of getting disillusioned with the sport and soon enough the ranking will follow.

Obviously it IS about the slams but you can't just show up 4 times a year and play amazing tennis and beat all comers. This isn't the WTA with the Sisters. You need to keep your game finely tuned and confidence usually follows good form during the season. Right now, Roger seems to have lost alot of confidence from losing Wimbledon. It shows. But if he says that he only cares about the Olympics and the US Open he better think harder because to do well at those events you need some good form or better confidence leading up to important events like those. Right now he has neither, so how as a fan do I expect him to prove otherwise?

As for the match, it was just a dull, uninspired performance against a guy who simply wilted at 6-5 in the second set and just avoided retiring in the third set out of respect to Roger and the game. This match for Fed despite having won it doesn't make me think he's getting better or going to win any slam this year. Let's be honest and stop ****ting ourselves. Nadal is going to be #1 this year, it's inevitable and he's a man on fire right now. He's winning even on hardcourts like it was never his weakest surface to begin with. Our boy Rog has his days at #1 numbered and I need to see something to make me believe he can get it back in 2009.

lol now he plays against karlović good match to laugh

Yeah, it 'll be fun. But I have a feeling that there's nothing to worry about. Remember earlier in spring Fed was on the verge of losing in his first match against some qualifier (don't remember his name exactly - Hartfield or what?) ranked somewhere outside top 100? Everybody was shocked then but Fed was pretty much OK after that. Can there be history repeating itself?

As I said in the match thread:

I wouldn't write Federer off just yet. Historically he has struggled in early rounds of tournaments- even during his very prime.

e.g.

Tokyo 2006
Vs. Suzuki, Takao (JPN) 4-6 7-5 7-6(3)

Miami 2006
Vs. Clement, Arnaud (FRA) 6-2 6-7(4) 6-0

Dubai 2005
Vs. Minar, Ivo (CZE) 6-7(5) 6-3 7-6(5)

etc.

This match could be just what he needs to get some form and confidence back.

I never quite understood the concept of lying to yourself. His level dropped considerably in 2008 and the sooner people accept it, the better. Especially the fans.

Could it be that not only is he in a slump from losing Wimble, but he is now spent physically too? He had mono, and never really left the tour (like Ancic). Could he be tired. If so, he should take the rest of the year off after the US and Olympic.

That has been accepted, and it's clear in his results, now do you expect it to drop even further?

When did I say it hadn't?

Of course he's playing worse, what I was saying was that this match could help him get his form back.

What's distressing about Federer's performance is that he seemed so happy with the win, like he had just played a top player and really won the match instead of having it gifted to him due to illness. His post match comments were weird too, and I've heard this a lot from Federer. He doesn't seem to take the initiative a lot of times, rather he waits for a moment of frailty to pounce. It's almost as if he doesn't realize Ginepri outplayed him the entire match, and if it were not for his nerves failing he would be out of the tournament.

Excerpt:
Federer said he could tell that Ginepri was in distress.

"He had trouble breathing or whatever. It was actually throughout the second set, whereas I had absolutely no problem," Federer said. "I really hoped, because I was on top of him all the way through the second set, that I would get that crucial break and then I could sort of race away with it.

"I knew if I could just turn it around a little bit, things would swing my way. Obviously, once I was back on even terms, you know, he let his head hang a little bit. Obviously, he was feeling even more tired. I took advantage of it, which was nice for me," Federer said.

I was at the court yesterday watching this match. Being a big fed fan it was a roller coaster ride the first 2 sets. But Fed came out on top in the end of the second set. Robby G was playing the important points very well which gave problems for Fed. In all it was a good match, I enjoyed it.

"Whatever". Looks like he's just happy with his opponent's sickness rather being concerned with his inability to outplay a player below his own level. Bad move.

I don't think that Ginepri outplayed him most of the entire match, but he did an extremely great job in attacking his 2nd serve for the first set and midway through the second. I keep hearing that the match was gifted to him, but what I gathered from the match and his interview, he was trying to weather the fact that Ginepri was playing really well. Federer did tighten up his game when Ginepri was serving for the match, and all I keep hearing is that Ginepri's nerve cost him the match, but nothing about Roger's response. :-?

You probably hit an important point there.

Federer seems to still believe he has his "aura of invincibility", which will unfortunately be a key factor to his eminent decline. In order for Federer to achieve success for his future matches, he MUST have a Nadal mentality - being aggressive, taking initiative from the beginning, taking risks, and never stop fighting until the win.

While I really want Federer to win Cincinnati, and then the US Open this year (Because this will be his last chance to get a GS this year and the very fact that his opportunities to win GS are running out), there needs to be a change in his way of doing things.
