I currently work at the US Open and after Federer's practice today with Nicolas Kiefer in Arthur Ashe, he gave me a racquet of his. He is quite friendly. Anyways what all of you want to know, is what he is playing with.
It is the mold of the old Pete Sampras Wilson Classic 6.0
However, it is 90 sq. inches. It is slightly tweeked from the Sampras model, obviously since it is 5 more sq inch in string surface. Also, the grip size is 4 3/8, something I heard more and more pro's are dropping to. It allows for a heavier racquet head, and gives more whip and wrist into the ball. Nadal and Lopez are using a 4 1/4 grip believe it or not. Nadal uses the Aeropro Drive, but not the cortex, Cortex is simply painted on. Anyways if anyone wants to know about anyone elses racquets, let me know. I am working in the Stringing Room all Tournament....

Now I want to see Vinnier6 come by and tell my Nadal doesn't use an APD. Seeing as I was so stupid to believe he actually used one:rolleyes:

Good for you and it's always good to hear when players are nice and cool...So you are in a nice position to settle or at least shed some light on some long time questions out here. And of course I think it's time to bring your digital camera and scale to work the next two weeks...

Blake and Haas sticks and specs for a start since there seems to be a new thread every week about those two...and see what else you can find out about everyone else's specs who's using PJ's etc. Have fun and see what info you can get for everyone.

I'm choosing not to be skeptical, and thus say that this thread will end up phenomenally big and overly discussed.

Of course, the skeptical side of me says different things :)

Edit: I'm muuuch less skeptical now I see this is a 2-year member posting this, it was just the 'encyclopedic nature' of the OP that put me off.

The OP stated the following a couple weeks ago before Federer gave him his racket:
Fed uses Wilson 6.0....the old black Sampras racket..i thought this was established?

I guess he intends to establish this once and for all.

Are you a stringer?. The reason I ask is I don't believe Wilson would endorse US Open stringers to divulge "trade information" (whether we already know it or not) especially regarding Federer's equipment. Just curious, why did Federer give you one of his racquets? Thanks for passing along the information anyways.

Yea, why would he just give you his racket. Just for ***** and giggles?

wow you are one lucky guy!!!!!!! :)

so, did you just ask for the racquet, or did he give it out to you? I have always wondered what players would do if i asked for their racquet.

Note how on Federer's K90 racquet, at the top two corners of the "V" of the throat are sharp angled cutouts:

Whereas on Sampras' PS 6.0 85, the top two corners of the "V" are curved like a semicircle and flat (not indented like on Federer's K90):

Thus, Federer's racquet cannot be from the same mold as the PS 6.0 Original.

You must be very excited.

As well as the pics, is it possible for you to do a comparison playtest of the racket. By that i mean compare how the federer racket plays to how the sticks he is supposed to have played play.

Looking forward to the pics.

^^ if federer gave me a raquet i don't think i'd play with it, just keep it. If you could get a signature on it or something it could be worth a lot of money someday.

actually the ones on fed's stick look curved as sampras' do, only that part of the throat in the k90 is black and it blends in with fed's shirt so it is difficult to tell from that picture.

if you look very closely at the top right portion of the "V" on fed's k90, you can see the indentation. but then again, a better picture would be nice.

edit: i figured i might as well go the distance and find a better one. i think this one illustrates it a bit better.

If he playtests it SHOULD stop speculation about which racket federer uses. So he would be doing the talktennis community a favour.

just the fact that he has the cortex system "painted on" should prove my point....every stinking pro out there is playing with some kind of pj'ed racquet....

guess what...he is hitting with Roger today so no pics for you guys;) ...just kidding , keep up the good work

It can't be from the same mold and be a different head size - the same mold would have to have the identical head size. Possibly the OP means the same layup, meaning only graphite and Kevlar and no karophite black?

rod laver gave me his racquet today. i'll post pics later, but first i'm going to the courts to have a hit with wayne gretzky. what can i say, i'm a lucky guy!
