Federers Rally-Revenge vs Nadal at the AO Eight Years Later

LOL. A guy is 36 and another is 31 but some claim that 36 year old guy has lost less foot speed . Comedy Gold

Lol nadal fans trying to say he is always injured and had mental issues with confidence so djok beat downs dont count and has heavily declined and fed is always playing at peak prime... then these nadal fans suddenly realise that all this means that they are basically saying nadal is physically feeble, mentally feeble and far less of an athlete than federer. Nadal isnt even a better athlete or physical specimen so doesnt even have that attribute in an GOAT debate. Although GOAT debate is dead. Nadal is not in any GOAT debate

Lol if they think fed hasnt declined and nadal has fine even better nadal is even worse of an athlete than fed than we all though. Lol theyre basically saying federer has a 15 year peak. This puts him so far out of nadals league that should we even ecer mention nadal? He isnt in the same breath as a guy who has a 15 year peak. No comparison

Epic at losing AO finals while being up a break in the 5th?

Epic because even his biggest haters have their alarms set at 2,3,4am no matter who he's playing and watch every match, sitting closer to their tv's than I do :p Fed is GOAT, but he's certainly someone I'm not waking up to watch. Errybodyandtheymomma up in here watches every single thing Nadal does.

Lmao at nadal being more interesting than fed. Thats more insulting than claiming hes better than him.

Dude i dont think your a troll and yojr probably just a bit defensive with so many fed fans here but seriously you belive that BS? I can guarantee you many fed fans find nothing more boring than watching a 6 hour nadal match to beat a 100 ranked player and will certainly not be waking up for it. Reading score will suffice. Nadal vs fed on the other hand ohhhh yeah id wake up 3.30am for that. Nadal vs del potro i wouldnt wake up for but would be pretty good

And Nadal of 2017 wouldn't be #1 or win USO against Fed or 2009 field but I'm happy he took advantage of his main rival being a 36 year old who can't play full season and that 250 USO draw.

Nadal's the man.

Who told you Nadal is Federer's rival? According to VB, Nadal in his "weakened state" cannot be considered Federer's main rival. Federer's main rival is Cilic because they contested Wimbledon and AO.

All the players will give everything they own if they could win two slams, sweep the clay seaon and be number one in their "weakened state." Poor Nadal. Can't catch a break.:D

Oh but many TW Nadal fans follow Fed just as fervently, they show up like clockwork in near every Fed match thread (especially if he loses a set) and seem to concern themselves very deeply with his match schedule, whether he's playing under a roof, whether he's skipping CC season etc.

Nadal is indeed epic though, on that front I don't disagree.

You get what im saying, and I get what you're saying, which is why at the end we always get along. No need answering fresh green trolls on here. I have no ill-will toward Fed, I just don't find him nearly as must-see.

No doubt, just like Bagdathis was Fed's main rival in 2004-2007 given that Rafa was still wearing diapers and a pacifier.

It is one of the sweetest things about Fed's current win streak, that it came in one of Nadal's career best seasons.

Much harder to spin things though no doubt, as evidenced by this thread little bulls are certainly gonna try.

Yep, they are trying really hard. But we are not buying what they are selling.

Yeah, and that's why we don't understand you. What Rafa does is impressive, I appreciate it, but it's not rare. You find amazing athleticism and work ethic and mentality in many sports.

But finding creativity is much rarer, that's why people like Fed are special, and it's hard for us you guys don't see that.

It's not about 20 majors and the records, and this is why we are so frustrated that you guys don't see that.

I have disagreement here!

I never claimed even once that Federer is GOAT. I don't believe in GOAT. Secondly, I don't wake up at 2,3,4 am to watch Rafa.

The only players I do that other than Roger is Stan/del Potro.

Such a sweeeping generalization is so wrong

So is taking me seriously ALL OF A SUDDEN today. o_O I'll leave the thread it's REALLY not that serious.

I'm pretty relaxed here actually. Just woke up. Haven't had time to break stuff yet. Do I need more smilies for my zen state to come across on the interwebz :mad:;):)

Yes :p
and are you caught up on super?

For the others:

please listen and enjoy, I hope you're offended ;) #GetIntoThisEpicness #Revival

I listened to a few of the songs when I first saw they came up on YouTube. River is my favourite. I have a handful of favourite Eminem songs, but rap is not my thing as a rule.

Great album, took 2-3 listens before I appreciated (which is usually the case for me with my fav music)
The river video comes out in 2.5 hrs :D

A guy who barely won 1 AO title and needed two five setters is on par with peak play with 6 AO champions? No way.

That's like saying Djokovic is on par with Rafa, because he pushed him to five once on clay and gave him some tough matches.

Also how was Fed AO09 his peak? He almost lost a five setter to Berdych and actually lost the final, while in 2007 Fed won without losing a set.

No, it's pure fluke that Rafa's peak seems as high as Fed's peak due to lefty thing and Fed past his peak.

Come on, can Rafa bagel people like Hewitt in GS finals?
It's like saying Davydenko's peak on HC is the same as Rafa's peak, just because he matches up well against Nadal.

Why do people just use a few matches? Isner took Rafa to five at RG, doesn't mean his peak is as good as Federer's on clay.

Never said 2009 was Federer’s peak. What I wrote was AO2009 first four sets were the highest level of tennis I’ve seen.

Why should this keep you up at night in a cold sweat? Is it not possible the straight setters in 07, 06, 05 and wherever else were not quite against the sort of fire and brimstone competitor Nadal was?

And is it not possible irrespective of peaks and primes, a match, a set, heck one game, can perhaps produce the highest level between two players?

And Nadal of 2017 wouldn't be #1 or win USO against Fed or 2009 field but I'm happy he took advantage of his main rival being a 36 year old who can't play full season and that 250 USO draw.

Nadal's the man.

Your problem Zagor, is you don’t know how to handle someone agreeing with you.

I wasn’t at all being sarcastic in saying both Fed and Nadal were amazing in 2009, and I’m doubly glad he’s managed to get that monkey off his back.

Thread should be called @zagor 's Rally-Revenge.

Zagor’s Rally Revenge. I like that!

I wasn't being saracstic in my post either. Good for Nadal to finish #1 ahead of 36 year old Fed and win USO without facing a 25 ranked player, he's an inspiration.

However, no comparison. He wouldn't have had those results against the 2009 field.

Is it remotely possible your contempt/loathing/hatred for Nadal [or his fans] is a fraction more stronger then your love/joy for Federer?

This would make you a Dark Lord. In which case, Zagor is a fine name.

Darth Zagor.

I like it.

@Hitman >>> it's been further modified to Darth Zagor's Rally Revenge. He's a Sith.

20.

the first one was better, the second one was more epic given that it was in the middle of federer comeback and without it who knows maybe nadal could have been given a chance to claw back, 2009 one happened at a relatively lower importance moment in the match

Probably the best rally I have ever seen in tennis was a Nadal vs Federer rally in 2009 at the Australian Open:

Nadal won that insane rally and the match.
However, the rally in their 2017 final is resembling this one a lot - just with Federer being the winner of both rally & match.

Conincidence? Fate?

Whatever it is - those are two of the greatest rallys of the two greatest players in history. How could anyone not love tennis watching it?

Thanks, awesome post!

One can clearly see that Fed's current forehand is far inferior than the 2009 level. But what is different is that Fed is striking the ball a lot sooner giving Nadal a lot less reaction time. And of course, Nadal losing some of that explosive athleticism only helped.

Fed has tactically and strategically changed. It doesn't matter how much you can hit the wow shots. What matters is winning the crucial points, and Fed simply could not hold it together in 2009...he can in 2017.

Edit: Watched the first point again. Fed basically gave away the point after Nadal's incredible retrieval by hitting a very weak backhand. Fed should have been prepared and just positioned himself to blast a forehand winner and ended the point - he had ample time to do this. This simply doesn't happen in 2017. Now, one can say Nadal doesn't retrieve like that in 2017 either, but note that Nadal's retrieval was preceded by Fed's own incredible forehand retrieval. In essence, Fed was simply strategically and mentally overmatched in 2009. He was in the driver's seat for most of this point, and he still managed to lose it!

No comparison - Fed 2017 would not have the same results against Nadal 2009. AO 2009 was the highest level of tennis I’ve seen - ever. Both were on fire the first 4 sets.

Perhaps off the ground, but Federer's serve was pretty horrendous; I believe that out of 380+ slam matches of his that are charted on TA, the 2009 AO final was his 370th (or so) best in terms of first serve %. Rare serving off day in a big match.

True. I’m so glad his Claydal demons seem to be behind him. It was a difficult stretch 2008 - 2015 seeing him tense up every time he seemed to be across Nadal.

Not at all, I'm just asking a few questions in hope of being illuminated by objective tennis experts and analysts.

As I admitted, my simple mind just can't grasp the logic that states Fed hasn't aged a day since their 2009 AO final while Nadal has suffered massive physical decline in the meantime yet the 2017 AO final between vampire Fed and Karlovic footspeed Nadal still went to 5 sets. You'd expect such a gap in quality between two players to result in a straightfoward match, yet Fed had to come back from a break down in the 5th set.

I'm also interested in why Nadal's massive physical decline disappears when he's not facing a player with a strong BH wing or we're in the CC season. Do you remember people remarking on how slow and old Nadal looks during his 2017 FO campaign of terror? I can't seem to recall it personally (though of course, I could be very wrong).
Or even better, they said Nadal wasn't yet at his best on HC when Fed was beating during winter and spring. So when did Nadal actually play his best on HC last year? In Montreal an Cincy where he was beaten by Shapo and Nick, in the New York challenger, in Beijing where Kyrgios self-destructed an Nadal was MP down against Pouille in the 2nd round or in Beijing where Fed routined him?

It takes a GOAT to be able to revenge a rally like that 8 years later against the same guy and even bigger - the 5th set!
