Roger Federer has a special streak on clay courts that stretches back to 2002. He has reached the final of at least one major clay tournament every year since 2002 - That is 11 straight seasons.

2002 - Hamburg
2003 - Rome
2004 - Hamburg
2005 - Hamburg,
2006 - MC, Rome, RG
2007 - MC, Hamburg, RG
2008 - MC, Hamburg, RG
2009 - Madrid, RG
2010 - Madrid
2011 - RG
2012 - Madrid

Can Federer once again get to the final of at least one major clay event this year to make it 12?

Amazing consistency of Federer on clay.

I had never noticed this before. Thanks Hitman. As a bit of an extension, I believe I also heard somewhere that Federer can take over the record for number of wins at RG this year if he reaches something like the 4th round. Which is pretty insane when you think about who he's playing against.

What is really interesting is that he was making (at least one) big clay final in the years 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005, when there were still actually some good clay courters (Coria, Ferrero, Costa, post-hip-surgery Kuerten...).

After 2005 is not the same, Ferrero was never the same after 2003, Coria was never the same after 2005, Costa was too old, post-hip-surgery Kuerten was never the same Kuerten,.... what great clay courter was going to stop Federer on clay before the finals?

Yes, I would agree. Nobody after 2005 was stopping Federer before the final. There weren't many (if any) left were there? It has to be said though that he still probably started to get better on clay starting in 2005. His RG results especially took a huge jump. Now whether that means he would've lost to one of those guys in 2005 and benefited from them not being there we'll never know, but if he was beating some of those guys in earlier years I don't think they would've stopped him from 2005 onwards. The only guy there that he would have trouble with was probably Kuerten. (I'm assuming here that Kuerten was still a bit less than what he was when he won his 3 RG.)

By the way hes recent form has been i doubt it. But lets see how the off season work is going, come Madrid.

Other than the bad back at Indian Wells, Federer has played one really poor match in 2013 against Benneteau in Rotterdam. By no means has he been razor sharp or at his best since the Aussie Open, but his level wasn't as bad as its made out to be. At this point, I see no reason to expect anything less of Federer.

I would say with three cracks at it, there's a reasonable chance that he will make it to at least one final in the next few weeks. Maybe he doesn't. Regardless, I expect him to play well and be a tough out for anyone who knocks him off.

Even in 2013, the only players able to beat Federer on clay: Nadal, Djokovic (and possibly Murray and Del Potro, provided that the Argentine does not play as against Dolgopolov!). Even in 2013, Ferrer would lose against Fed.
This year, Nadal vs. Ferrer at Acapulco: 6-0, 6-2. :D
Nice job, David.

Murray won't beat Fed on clay until Fed's on the senior's tour and even then, it's doubtful.

I am absolutely sure that if blue clay played just like red clay (which it obviously can, it is not about color) and if Nadal won it, veroniquem would be the greatest advocate of blue clay, seeing it as a way for resurgence of clay tennis (which is currently close to unwatchable due to poor visibility on TV).

yes, this ...the blue clay courts in 2012 were just under-prepared somewhat like Monte Carlo in 2012 ( which had far more serious injuries to players ) . If prepared well, there wouldn't be that much of a difference b/w the blue clay courts and the red clay in madrid in 2009-11 as far as speed/bounce/traction is concerned ....

Blue Clay was awesome... I already miss it. I'd still be loving it, had Berdych won the Final or any other player.
