Fedheads want Thiem Year End #1?

Thiem has the game to challenge current Nadal on clay. The fact that he didn't do it in RG so far doesn't mean he will not do it next time. He was also destroyed 6-2 6-1 6-4 by Djokovic in RG 2016, then beat him in their next 2 RG meetings.
And who pray tell beat him after RG 2016

Yes-- Stefan Edberg in the USO 1992-- he played five five-set matches to win the title.

2017 Federer-- he played four five set matches to win the title.

2014 AO-- Stan-- another tough road, including a 9-7 fifth set over Djoker in the semis.
All three slightly inaccurate.

Edberg "only" won three five-setters (plus a four-setter against Sampras in the final).

Fed also played three five-setters against Nishikori, Wawrinka, and Nadal. He played four sets against Melzer.

Stan's match vs. Djoker was a QF encounter. He played Berdych in an also-tight match in the semis.

Well he did have the mental strength to close out 3 tiebreaks against Nadal in Australia. Not to mention he's beaten Nadal every year on clay since 2015.
Finals are a different beast though. All his wins against Nadal have been before the finals, be it Australia, Rome, Madrid, etc. He won that nail biting thriller against Novak in London last year (after beating Federer too) but then lost to Tsitsipas once he reached the final.

And yeah, he closed out that QF but I also remember failing to serve out the match (in a comical game) and blowing numerous match points. Fortunately for him, he kept giving himself enough opportunities to finally close it out.

And who pray tell beat him after RG 2016
With Thiem you never know how he will play. He can play a terrible match and then play his best in the next tournament, or vice versa. For example, Nadal schooled him 6-0 6-2 in MC 2018, but when they met in Madrid that year Thiem won. I don't see a reason why Thiem can't suddenly bring his best in RG as well. Nadal is long past his prime, I'm not sure how long he will be able to get away with it.

Would be awesome. All he has to do is win his first ever hard court major, his first ever clay Masters, and his first ever Roland Garros, then outperform one of the all-time greatest indoor players throughout the indoor season. Seems simple enough.
Who's this? Djokovic has 5 YEC's, true, but he's not anywhere CLOSE to one of the greatest indoor players ever. He's way behind Fed, Lendl, Sampras and Becker there.

Thiem is 27, Nadal is ancient at 34. Using every bit of tennis logic over the past 51 years of the Open Era, Thiem should be beating Rafa with a blindfold on, on any court, anywhere in the world.

But he won't.
True logic: Federer peak incoming 2022

What do all those matches have in common? They’re BO3. In BO5 you have to be able to focus and maintain your top level for a longer period of time. Timmy is much more streaky than RAFA and that’s the main reason he’s failed to break through. RAFA’s been past his prime since AO 2014 and all he’s done since then is win 4 more RG’s 3 of which were in a row.

Let's see in a month. The only way for Thiem to prove he can beat Nadal at RG is...well, you know.

We're talking about something that has never been done ever: beating Rafa in a FO final.
There is a first time for everything.

But not a first Thiem for everything.

He has not even come close to beating Rafa in a RG final.

He won’t do it this year I don’t think. I’d need to see him get actually close first to have any faith.

thiem did beat Nadal at AO 2020.
Yes, I know, but it's not the French Open final. Thiem also should have defeated Nadal in the 2018 USO final and couldn't get it done. Obviously if Thiem meets Rafa in the FO final in October, I'll be rooting for him to deny Nadal #20. But I would still give Rafa a 98.8% chance for the win.

If Nadal's ancient at 34 then what are Fed and Serena at 39 lol. Dinosaur era representatives?

Where’s the basis for this claim? All you have to do is look at the 2018 F which ended in a straight sets beat down. The first 2 sets of 2019 were competitive, but then Timmy was fed bakery products in sets 3-4.

Your comparison on how Timmy from RG 2016 vs the 2020 AO doesn’t work. Way more time past between those events and Joker is now past his prime which ended after RG 2016.
Honestly, Fedr's effort last year at RG was just as good as Thiem's 2018 effort.

And after Thiem won the second set last year, he was annihilated 6-1, 6-1 by Rafa.

I think people are forgetting that Thiem may have the game to beat Nadal at RG, but he sure as hell doesn't have the mental strength or belief. That's been proven time and time again against lesser opponents on less iconic courts. To beat Nadal in a FO final is without doubt the hardest task in tennis. I just don't think he's up to it, or anything close to being mentally able to do it.
Borg is the only player in the Open Era who may be mentally up to the task of doing it.

From Fed to Djoker to Thiem, they have all proven unable to do it.

we see this time and time again and slam as the player with a rough road goes down in the final. Care to list exceptions. 2018 Not even remotely even Ground.

in a month will see who’s holding the title.:sneaky:
I'm willing to bet it won't be Timmy.

Wrong!
He won 3 consecutive five setters against Krajicek, Lendl and Chang, respectively.
And Federer also won 3 matches in five sets but no consecutively.

Edberg wool pants era stuff. Check on Stanimal. Last I checked badal went five Dimatrough at the 2017 Australian open.:sneaky: Feds draw was so good I predicted him to make the final in the tournament despite the handwringerering.

So you have Tim as some kind of peak goat should he win the 2020 French Open? Thiem is goating:

If Tim sweeps both:

9125 points, passes Nadal with RG
Meles, you act as if dethroning Rafa in an RG final happens every day. Thiem choked massively and repeatedly against lowly Zverev in that dude's first slam final. But he's not going to choke in gargantuan fashion if he meets Rafa again at RG? Thiem is 0-3 against Rafa there. He hasn't got a chance in hell!

"Fedheads want Thiem Year End #1?"

In regards to the GOAT conversation, not really. Why care about a record Roger never had?

But I do want Thiem to be YE#1. It would make it official that the New Order has begun.

I don’t really care about the YE#1 record as much as others do, but I do want Thiem to end in that spot. Either him or Nadal (though it’d be kinda weird if Nadal did it while having less weeks overall than Fed or Djoker).

Who gives a sh-t?? Coric and Zverev have beaten Fed at Halle, they wouldn't come close to him on Centre Court at Wimbledon. Apples and oranges. Thiem beating Rafa on clay in Argentina or Barcelona might as well be the far side of the moon compared to beating him BO5 on Chatrier.

We're talking about something that has never been done ever: beating Rafa in a FO final.
Dont laugh but if one man is ever to do it then it would be Federer even at 40. Last year although he got blown off court (literally remember the wind) in the 1st set i felt at times he was all over Rafa but the wind meant he could not really go for his shots. If next june they meet in the final and it was 20-20 Major count wise id put money on Federer. Nobody would pick him so he would be relaxed and when relaxed he is obviously still today the best player in the world. His natural ability is on another level.

You mean a New World Order???
Somebody needs to photoshop these guys' heads with the Fearsome Four's (Thiem, Zed, Med, Tsitsipas). Although Tsits is in a bit of a slump, he'll come around eventually....if he doesn't get replaced by Jannik Sinner. Although a Fearsome Five would be awesome!

Surely everyone wants a new #1?

The 22 month points window means it is not going to happen for quite a while though. Thiem isn’t winning RG.
