Feds racquet has affected his game

I don't think he has ever recovered from his racquet change. He has never fully had confidence in his shot selection with his current racquet. But he committed to it, even though his game has never fully returned.

He picked the worst time in his career to switch to a new racquet. Its obvious that he was listening to the wrong people. Plus, I don't think he ever needed a 98 sq in racquet. His shots have never been the same, and neither has his game.

I know Pete Sampras said he wished he would have made the switch to a bigger racquet, but he never did. He surely wouldn't have tried a switch like that when he was 30+ yrs old.

Its unfortunate of how bad the timing was with this racquet change, because I'm sure everyone was telling Federer that he needed to move to a more modern frame and head size in order to compete with today's players. It ultimately has been his undoing.

Sorry, but you are completely wrong here. Federer has clearly had a better year than he did in 2013. He had a great run in Australia, won in Dubai, made the final at Indian Wells and Monte Carlo, and has shown that he can beat top players (i.e Djokovic twice, Murray, Tsonga). Let's not forget he just had a new set of twins born, and he got beaten by a free swinger in match that could have gone the other way. He will continue to improve and is still a contender.

No he won't. He got a new tennis racquet.

Each time he steps on the court from no on he will play worse than the time before .. because of the racket.

If he should change shirt or shoes , God help us.

its 100% sure the racket is part of his problem.

he will switch back soon - or retire soon. i would prefer a retirement. its hard for a top guy to go on losing and losing...but most of the time they are to greedy for the money.

I'm going out on a limb and saying he's not playing for the cash. He's pretty set there..

thats what ppl like us, without that much money, are thinking...but its not like the human brain works ;)

its not only about the money for winning a match. its about contracts and about the money he gets just by registering/playing a tournament.

Maybe.

I don't know Roger Federer terribly well.

if he keeps losing… Poor Roger… Only got to the Australian Open SF, won Dubai, got to two Master's 1000 finals, beat several top ten players, etc. Yeah, he is playing so horribly at number 4 in the world, he certainly should retire

Roger has enough money to last him a lifetime. He has gotten $81 million in prize money, and much much more through sponsorship and advertisement. He is playing for the joy of it, and for the chance to increase his achievements. Given his success at Dubai (with a strong field), he certainly has a shot at winning a big title on the faster courts.

Spin I think hirshi is right....... with 4 kids things are getting tight in the Federer household :-(. Poor Roger needs every cent.

Not too mention both of their parents were pretty decent at tennis I hear ;)

What gives you that idea? Around these parts it is commonly known that their father only won titles because he played in a time where there was a vacuum of quality and his opponents were local NTRP 4.0s and 4.5s, didn't you know that?

His sons first words will be "weak" and "era":shock::cry: lol

Didn't he have the same great run at the Aus Open last year? Didn't he get to the Rome final last year and lost in the 1st Round this year? He didn't play Monte Carlo last year and was severely injured when he played IW last year where he could barely stand up straight. Djokovic had a severe wrist injury at MC so that one doesn't count. And Federer also beat Tsonga last year at the AO. Murray was playing his first tournament after many months off after back surgery at this year's AO. But the biggest factor is that Federer had a bad back injury last year and none this year.

Well he did it once before.

For sure, it did affect his game.

I don't quite get why people are egging Fed to switch to a bigger racquet, especially the likes of zero slam BG (maybe to fill a column, whatever. He can coach but racquet suggestion to Fed, c'mon!). Why don't this guys by the same token suggest Nadal to switch to much a bigger racquet, so that he won't lose sometimes and continue his sojourn at eclipsing TMF (as if it'll ever happen!;))?

His results are better since switching, he had a baby and was thinking about skipping the FO plus Gulbis doesn't get enough credit for TAKING that match.

Good switch IMO.

He also had babies in 2009 but still won the French Open, Wimbledon, and nearly won the US Open final if not for a lucky shot by JMDP, all using his Tour 90.

Federers 'decline' isnt due to any racket change.
Have ever seen some one get faster and stronger with age in sports when past 30 ?
Except for dopers/cheats like Lance Armstrong?

Lance was a doper/cheater, but so was everyone else. You had to dope to be able to compete. So you basically had 100 riders that were all doping in every race. If you look at that era, every single TDF winner for 10 years straight ended up eventually getting caught. And the ones that weren't caught were doping, too.

May the better doper win!

The daughters were born after FO and Wimbledon, you're so untrustworthy that it is funny.
Yes, because having a wife who's 8 months pregnant for the first time and with twins never weighs on your mind.

Once your babies are born and are healthy and your wife is perfectly fine is when a big load of stress is lifted off of your mind. They have nannies to take care of the babies after they're born.

Up to now he is worth 180 million

In 3 years when most of his current deals run up he would've made 319 million and that's before adding in his winnings for the years to come obviously. And than lets not forget he has a lifetime heal with Wilson for a base salary of 2 million a year, than add in Nike who is already in talks to continue his line but rebrand it the Premier Elite line with a current player wearing the line ::cough:: Dimitrov ::cough:: and he is only going to get richer regardless when he retires.

Playing:

He is easily playing better than at this time last year. He is moving well (admittedly not great), and making runs into every tourney he has entered with the exception of the French. Yes he is adjusting to the new racket and if you listen to him speak about it he is saying he feels he has easier access to power with the loss of some touch but he has a bit more control. Now I take that for what it is, but truth be told I believe him over the weekend hack who is GUESSING as to what his racket really is. No one knows the material of let alone further specifics. So until he gets washed out of every major in the first or 2nd round and his ranking drops I will go with Roger.

Oh and he is ranked 4th, not 22nd. Jeeze guys lighten up sometimes I feel I have to read some posts with all of the lights off and soft rock playing in the background.

He is moving well, better than last year because his back is better than last year yet he is losing at inappropriate times, indicative of? All things being equal--of course aging is an incremental thing but so are his main competition since the the new kids on the block aren't really making remarkable leaps--the racquet is the sole perp for his recent misgivings at the slams. Oh, and considering he had to contend with another set of twins, that is just remarkable. Hand him back his old racquet and ''Wilson'' please do yourself a favour, don't start a new line, just continue with a best seller!

I'm not. Let's just give it till Wimbledon or at most, till the USO provided he reverts back to his old racquet, and if he reverts back and still fail (no worries about his age, like I said, his main competition aren't getting any younger either), never mind the young 'uns yet until they are truly relevant).;)

I don't think there's going to be any turning back now. I'd be shocked if he reverted back and to the contrary, I'd love a new line. I don't care much for the blades. why not?

Nike is always on the mission to build another Jordan brand like money printing machine. For the tennis market it is still unknown if any of the RF stuff can continue to sell after Roger retires. But I think Nike is willing to take a crack at it and try.

Are you re-****ed? Fed's record was 28-6 before RG. And that's better than previous years. And he's actually won way more this year than last year. I see fed being a lot more confident in his backhand than he's been in the last few years and he doesn't shank his forehand like he has been doing for sometime. Before clay season he has actually won a lot of hardcourt tournies and he's been in deep in the draw in most of them. People really have this ailment in this forum where they only see and peg the situation at the exact current state. Someone wins and they're the next big hit, if they lose, then they should retire. People here seem to miss the head and the tail, they only see the current time marker and I feel it's short sighted.

Yes, Agree. The dude also had twins and he's still flashing a pretty damn impressive record. 28-6 before RG is nothing to be ashamed of. What is he now, 32-7?

I think the racquet has improved his play. Maybe it doesn't translate well on clay because I do remember him having issues with the blade mold with the 18x20 pattern last year. But on hard court fed is very very tough to play. I actually feel more confident about him going deep than I did with his previous stick on hard court in the past.

The guy was basically using a cinder block with pws with a puny headsize before switching.

Sorry breakpoint. Wasn't aiming all this at your post, was trying to get the message across to the author of the thread mostly.

However, that win-loss record is only slightly better than last year because he had a bad back injury last year. But he had a better record in 2012 than this year through RG, and just about every year from 2004 to 2011 than this year through RG, all using his trusty Tour 90.

Actually, he's only won 1 hard court tourney this year so far - Dubai.

If the pregnancy is going good its a happy time. And yes, just leave it to the nannies, he he...

For some reason, I don't want them to totally abandon their box beams. I don't mind playing with other brands like: Vantage (Angell), Head, Yawnex:) and even Barbielat:) at one time!

I don't think the prostaff 95 would bite the dust though. That's been a big seller, I see tonssss of people playing with those. And not just folks buying into the fed hype, people who can really play.

People who can really play can also use the PS 90, so then they shouldn't abandon the 90 either. Besides, if you can REALLY play, you don't even need the 95 and can play great with the 90. :)

I don't know how they come up with such low estimates.

His endorsement deals for the last three years alone are about $50m/year so that's $150m right there... add his prize money and he's past $230 already. Add in pre 2011 endorsements and that's another $75m minimum...

Even if you take out his travel/accommodation costs which wont be nearly as much as people might think given tournaments pay for hotels and probably flights in some cases for him, as well as his Netjets deal he could probably be spending nothing on those things. Even if he was his Credit Suisse deal alone would more than account for it easily.

I can't see how they come up with a number as low as $180m. Forbes' own article in 2012 said "he's made made $241 million – nearly quarter of a billion dollars – in the past six years alone."

Since 2012 he's made another $100m... It adds up pretty quickly.

Didn't you forget income taxes? He has to pay income tax to every country that he plays tennis in and earns money. That was one reason why Nadal wanted to skip Queens due to the onerous UK taxes. Besides, Federer being a Swiss citizen and having a residence in Switzerland, I'm sure his income taxes are astronomical. And you also forgot to deduct any spending out of his own pocket over his career, like for houses, cars, furniture, property taxes, gifts, toys, personal travel, vacations, nannies, kids, food, clothes, his wife, his parents, relatives, coaches, stringers, trainers, etc. I don't think the Slams nor the Masters pay for your hotels nor travel expenses.

Nevertheless, he's got enough money to last him for the rest of his life, as long as he doesn't blow it like Borg, so he doesn't really need any more. Heck, his 4 kids are set for life, too.

And it happens that Edberg is, like, a fund manager. aha! that's why they got together! The tennis deal is just a cover. Edberg knows all about money, unlike Borg or Becker who didn't and lost all theirs.

Didn't you forget income taxes? He has to pay income tax to every country that he plays tennis in and earns money.
No, I did not. And the vast majority of his earnings are not taxable in the countries he plays in. In fact for the last 6 or 7 years probably less than 20% of his earnings (prize money) would fit that mould.

Also, we don't know anything about Federer's taxes other than tons of his ongoing costs will be 100% tax deductible (his coach/physio, all travel, all hotels he needs to pay for, travel nanny, all meals whole travelling).

And you also forgot to deduct any spending out of his own pocket over his career, like for houses, cars, furniture
Wrong. Sod off with your as-usual stupid assumptions.

I don't think the Slams nor the Masters pay for your hotels nor travel expenses.
OK.. so he spends, what, $500k on travel? Maybe less if you consider how many Netjets would cover.

Also - hotels are covered surely for him? There are plenty of perks guys like Federer gets because of who he is at any tournament outside of the majors. Since he can even pick and choose which Masters events he plays/doesn't play now I bet they make the decision as easy as possible for him. Having him there is worth more miles than anyone else in advance ticket sales at most tournaments in the world.
