Fellow Fat Players!

30 years old, 5'10" and currently 230lbs. I'm actually at my lowest weight since high school. I'm pretty damn fast but momentum can be an issue - when I get to the ball on a dropper or lob it's gotta be a good shot because I can't change directions like the smaller guys. I keep the points short and play offensively, because I'm not trying to grind it out.

http://i.imgur.com/iSmaESG.png Me at nationals on the left ~25 lbs heavier than I am now.

Diet is so important. It's amazing how just changing that can change your weight without having to increase exercise.

Yeah but anything that tastes good is bad for you, that is why what you say is so difficult to achieve. It is a peculiar side-effect of our evolutionary past that we find eating a lot of carbs and fat to satisfy our cravings. It goes back to the time when we had to work very hard to find food, and once we got it, it was best to consume it fast and store it in our bodies, due to lack of refrigeration and not knowing when the next wild boar would swing by.

6'3" and a deceptive 285lbs and I recently found out I am a 3.5. How exciting! Don't have the best footwork but because of a basketball background I got sum quick feet and hands. Throw in a decent wingspan and vertical leap and I eat up lobs 24/7. Down side to being my size is stamina! I try to end points with 3 strokes or less. Oh and it's hard to handle low bounces.

You're out of luck, Senti. I always thought sureshs had something of a crush on you, but it turns out he's a chubby chaser.

LOL. I swear he just said I was attractive. He did see my doubles vid and well yeah its the ONLY conclusion but no need to say it publicly :)

Yes, but when your parents bought you all those tennis lessons as a child were you fat?

I wonder if anyone has ever taken up tennis to help lose weight and been successful?

I'm 6"2 started playing tennis little bit over year and a half ago to lose weight. After quitting smoking I got to 243 pounds and started playing tennis that summer with friend of mine. After summer was over I lost around 35 pounds playing tennis and working out from time to time. Right now I'm at 200 and lowest I was 195 this past summer. Planning to reach 185 this coming summer if possible and would like to stay there. Biggest challenges are injuries as tennis is hard on the body and currently battling lower back pain for months already and had left knee issue from time to time.I envy you guys who are able to play outdoor all year long as we here in Canada are not as lucky especially in my city one of the coldest. :(

Me, I love playing fatties. Drop shot, lob, drop shot, lob. See fat boy run.

My father always say, do not play tennis to get fit, get fit to play tennis.

Do you cross country ski? Easy on the joints.

I am a 6'5" 300lbs 4.5 player who is almost 43. I often play against 5.0 and college players. I move well for my size, but I need to end the point quickly. I need to weigh about 250. Need to play more. One of the tournament I played in a few years ago had a 32 draw singles and 32 draw double with some byes. Half the draw was college players. 4 singles matches and 4 doubles in 2.5 days. During the doubles final. One of the two college kids we played was vomiting after the first set (100 degrees). My team won on a retirement. I was very sore for three days. I can still play hard, but recovery takes forever.

One of if not the best 4.0 among the several hundred in my area is 6 feet and over 290. He consistently hits like a brick, is surprisingly light on his feet, and plays the net well. I was really shocked he didn't get bumped to 4.5 last year.

I am a 6 feet 196 4.0 and feel like a lard *** as this is the most I've ever weighed. Much respect to those of you who can play well despite carrying the extra lbs.

Takes strength, coordination, and preplanning to do sports at a heavy weight. Some get used to it, most just sit on the couch and complain.
Old bud of mine, Fat Dave, at 5'9" and 275lbs., No.1 Varsity high school wrestle'er, could kick a street cleaning sign and land on his two feet. He rode motocross, then switched to snowmobiles in the intermediate class, even though his weight was well around 90 lbs more than his competition.

5'9-5/10 ranging around the 203-209. i played d3 at about 165-170 and was a fast piusher/junkballer. now i've put on muscle and fat (lets not kid each other). i don't think i'm that much slower but it is easier to hit through the court at a higher weight for me. aiming for 185-190 but we'll see. the more i go to the gym the heavier i'm getting.

Do fries go with that gym?

lolol c'mon, planet fitness isn't a gym!

but I have the same struggle... played between 165-170 in college at 5'9".

Currently 195 but much, much stronger. pure strength and power to weight.

however...im currently very quick for doubles, but my speed has slowed in singles. obviously, more ease of power. stamina is still good, but I can't grind like I used to because I simply can't chase down as many balls.

i never thought i'd say this but as a 2 year member of l.a. fitness and about 10 months at planet fitness, i get more done at planet fitness for a couple reasons. the pool at l.a. fitness was never used and it did help strengthen up my core (lots of back issues) but there are soooo many less attractive women at planet fitness so i can exercise more freely . without getting hit in ... j/k

Walking and running place anywhere from 4-20x your weight on each joint with each step....multiply that times the number of steps and your joints are getting heavily abused by the overweight body. The knees are especially vulnerable because they accommodate this stress at an angle, often twisting as well. What other sport is played on cement?....none.
So, keep running on cement, fat people, so I can keep replacing your joints, allowing me to stay employed.....and pay for my tennis ;)

You haven't seen the greens at my local municipal course apparently.

5'9 183 and you are right...when I have hit even 186 I feel it in my back...knee felt for the first time as if he needed popping...hurt like hell for about 30 seconds then it went away...the bottom line is any extra weight is rough on me. I really need to get to about 175 at 46.

I'm not as big as those guys but the largest I have ever been. I am 5'9" and 190 and yes, it is hard on the body.

*****...so I guess it's safe to say you don't play on windy days...or where there are no wind screens correct? I know I'd get tired of you calling lets on the wind blowing you into the next court in the middle of points.lol "You cannot be serious".lol

I am 6'2" * and 127 lbs.

* 190 cms.

I'm 5'11 and 190lbs. Monster thighs where I carry most of my weight though. My doubles partner is 6'2 and 250+ and still can win opens.

about your lower back pain....first thing I'd do is change your shoes...trust me...you have to invest in good shoes if you are going to play tennis. That's coming from a man that won't pay over 50 bucks for a raquet...but I pay 100 if need be for tennis shoes.

That's the standing joke. However, my legs are quite muscular.

I suppose the racquet keeps me down -- it's a ProStaff 95 with some lead tape on 6, 9 and 12.

sentinel does not play tennis at all. He is just pulling your leg.

At north of 200lbs, I consider myself in good shape (mostly because I consider round to be a good shape). I am a man of much inertia.

However, conditioning.... clearly that needs to be improved :)

I could run circles around you and still win without losing a game while you stand around like a beached whale :D

I sadly had one partner like you ... stood around in one spot and expected me or any partner to feed him the ball to his forehand. You really need to get in some kind of shape and not be a drag on those you play with.

^^^ I am in high demand. Last Sunday I turned down a college player because a high school junior's mother wanted me to play sets with the kid ahead of a tournament. I have players constantly pinging me to hit.

I have played against very good fat Players that beat me badly. usually those guys have either been big hitting "first strike" Kind of Players or Players with good Hands and a good net game.

I used to be overweight too (still am 200 and 6"0) and against good opponents (say 4.5 or better) you will Need to find a way to shorten Points if you are overweight.

for that reason I have always prefered to Play indoor on carpet against fitter opponents because I have a big serve. you cannot get into a grinding contest.

Yes I do play first strike tennis at 6'1" and 210-220 LBS and yes I did have previous knee and back injuries in bball. I only play singles, probably around 4.0 and a tad above.

I also did injure my knee the last two springs in a row at the end of the indoor hard court season, just before the outoor clay season started.

First time it was just a minor meniscus chip that poped back in in 11 days, second time it was some thorn ligaments that took most of the summer to heal.
