Fernando Verdasco's longevity is underrated.

I'm not making this thread because he's playing Cilic (Well I'd prefer Nando to win no spoilers) it's because he always there in the background doing his thing, making finals of 500s or 250s and making the 4th round at slams. I'm a Murray fan and at Wimbledon 2013 he dodged a Spanish bullet because he should have lost to Verdasco at Wimbledon but that emotional fluctuation and the belief to win came into play. Him and Kohlschreiber always seem to hover around the top 40/30 and have done for years now. He's 35 and plays a power game, he's in great shape and still has the fire, I have respect for that. He's one of the underrated Spaniards who's market value drops because of his performances vs Nadal but he has beaten Nadal, so has Ferrer and Lopez, lapdogs sit for their master not beat them! Nobody can compare longevity to say Federer or Lopez or even Karlovic but these guys playing high level tennis in their mid 30s and just hanging around with a solid ranking playing on the ATP tour all season, making solid money has to be respected. When I got into tennis in the late 90s, players playing in their mid to late 30s and maintaining a high ranking was a rarity, there was the Haitian (Correct me if I've got nationalities wrong) Ronald Agenor who was hanging around the top 100 around 1999/2000.

Fernando's movement is amazing still, his backhand is solid, forehand has fearhand qualities, solid slice and serve, emotionally he can fluctuate but still.

Verdasco vs Nadal two matches at AO are probably best two matches between any players ever at AO

It's so awesome that he's still seeded, I mean unlike Feliciano who is pretty much just putting in appearances at this point this guy (granted he's a few years younger) is still making it to 3rd/4th rounds at majors. To be playing top 30 level tennis at his age is no small thing, and he still has one of the sexiest forehands in the game.

My father met him back in 2013, said he was very polite and was very warm in his exchange of words, appreciating not only his fans, but fans of tennis.

Even in rememberance we forget to include him in our thread titles. What an awesome career. A near perfect, fluid game. A few inches taller and he may have done some damage. His style is timeless and effortless in the same way as Federer’s is, it oozes that longevity. Variety is amazing. A long long life being brutalized by the big 4 and still here, making deep runs. Almost denying Federer in last year’s Rotterdam #1 grab.

I know this is about Verdasco and he’s everything you say he is, who could ever forget that crazy final with Nadal at the AO? But you’ve mentioned Kohli, and he’s my favourite tennis player.

Great post.

I’m often saying I don’t care about wins and I don’t anymore when it comes to the big 3. For Kohlschreiber however, my one hope is he gets a masters. Isner got one in 2018. I hope Kohli gets his.

As a commentator put it during the Cilic match, he's a guy who seems to fall in and out of love with tennis depending on his mood. He has such a good game but has under-achieved with it so much although it doesn't seem to bother him, only us fans on here.

Verdasco was in great form in last night's match - truly outstanding at times. Cilic however was in the best form I've ever seen him in for the last couple of sets. I've never seen someone hit so hard off both wings from such compromised positions over and over again like he was. And this all came after they'd already been on court for over 3 hours. Cilic looked too fresh - suspiciously so actually given how he's looked in long matches previously.

No matter the result it will be yet another match which Verdasco's double fault bogey likely cost him the win. What a clanger to do that match-point up.

Nando introduced his son:

Nando's wife Ana Boyer is a half-sister of Enrique Iglesias and daughter of former Spanish minister of economy Miguel Boyer.
The baby is called Miguel, in honor of Ana's father who died in 2014. The baby was born in a hospital in Madrid at the end of March.
Nando and Ana first met each other in the summer of 2013 while they were enjoying holidays in Ibiza. In early 2017, they got engaged. The same year, in December, they got married.

Man, that baby already has more hair than one of Verdasco's fellow tennis compatriots.

Verdasco or Fiasco is a great player who should have won a major but he is a nutcase too. His technique is really good. Great FH. Oh, well :).

Verdasco could have possibly won a couple Masters tourneys if he had a more reliable service toss.

If he's serving well he can beat anyone.

Unfortunately for him his toss is usually all over the place and he's prone to double faults, which can sap his confidence and cause his level to drop.

Didn't he once say he could work harder to become consistent top 10 but he didn't need to because there was still plenty of money to be made w/o working that hard? Can't respect this guy.

Really makes you appreciate Federer with his 99.99% consistent ball toss. I wonder what kind of discipline it takes over many years to perfect such a seemingly simple thing.

Totally agree.

I feel for Verdasco though, because I have the same problem with my toss, even though I've worked at it.

I've improved it slightly by constantly telling myself to keep my tossing arm completely straight.

Other players I never see with ball toss issues - Nadal, Isner, Karlovic. Even Djokovic and Wawrinka has issues. Don't even get me started on Mugrin.
