Ferrara speaks: “I didn’t give anything to the physiotherapist and I warned him of the risks, for no reason should he come into contact with Jannik”

Winner Sinner

Hall of Fame
Umberto Ferrara, former athletic trainer of Jannik Sinner and directly involved in the “Clostebol Case” that led to the n.1 testing positive in the anti-doping tests and therefore to accept a three-month suspension proposed by WADA for objective liability of his team, has given an interview for the first time in which he tells his version of the facts in detail. It is a very interesting contribution that reveals previously unpublished details of the affair, given that Sinner has never gone into detail. Ferrara spoke to the Gazzetta dello Sport reporting his version of the facts. These are the most significant passages of his thoughts on the matter.

“It was right to wait for the ruling of the competent bodies, which does not call into question my actions,” says Ferrara, now in Matteo Berrettini’s team. “I have suffered serious damage to my personal and professional reputation. Everyone has read articles or comments that reported the facts in a manner that did not conform to what was ascertained by the Independent Tribunal with the ruling of August 19.”

Ferrara confirms that he is fully aware of the risks of Trofodermin in terms of anti-doping. Why did he have it with him at Indian Wells? “I have been using it for years because it was prescribed by a specialist as a support drug for a chronic disease. I was perfectly aware of the ban and I have always kept it with the utmost caution, in my personal beauty case. I had it in the USA because I could have needed it for the disease and to have it available, being abroad.”

This is the most significant step, how the product came into the possession of Naldi, who in turn passed it on indirectly to Sinner. “I didn’t give anything to Naldi, I suggested using it because he had a cut on his finger that wasn’t healing and was making his job difficult. I was very clear in communicating to Naldi the nature of the product and the need for it not to come into contact with Jannik for any reason. In fact, I allowed its use only inside my personal bathroom. Naldi didn’t deny having been informed, but he said he didn’t remember.”
They ask Ferrara if he ever had any doubts that Naldi could have treated Jannik without gloves or without washing his hands thoroughly, given the risks: “Absolutely not, precisely because of the warnings I had given him and because of his skills”.

His reaction once the news of the positive result arrived: “Disbelief and amazement. Hearing about clostebol, the connection with Trofodermin was immediate. In a few hours we reconstructed the steps that led to Jannik’s contamination and I provided proof of the purchase of the spray at a pharmacy in Bologna”.
“I found the statements very balanced and I appreciated the fact that ITIA clarified that it had based its assessments on the advice provided by a legal team. With hindsight, it is easy to say that I would not do the same things again. I would certainly not rely on the behavior of others. I suffered from the superficiality, sometimes aggravated by bad faith, with which many people treated my position in the affair”

Ferrara thus responds to those who criticized Berrettini's choice to rely on him after the Sinner affair: “I am not surprised by the criticism, since it came from those same people (journalists and others) who treated the affair superficially. Matteo did his research and made the decisions he considered best. Did I feel demonized? Yes, very much. I had to note that someone chose to attack me, reporting facts and circumstances in a superficial way, deliberately ignoring the content of the Independent Court's ruling, which clearly determined the dynamics and responsibilities individuals".

LOL more comedy stories.

1. I didn't give anything to him

2. I warned him to use it only in my personal bathroom ( :-D , wait you said you didn't give it to him, and what did you guys do in your personal bathroom? )

3. I keep it in my personal beauty case ( :-D wow, that explains how you always look so beautiful)

"I have been using it [Trofodermin] for years as prescribed by the specialist doctor as a support drug for a chronic disease. I was perfectly aware of the ban and I have always kept it with the utmost caution, in my personal bathroom.

I didn't give anything to [Giacomo] Naldi (the physio), I suggested using it because he had a cut on a finger that didn't heal and made his job complicated.

I was very clear in communicating to Naldi the nature of the product and that there was no need to get it in touch with Jannik.

In fact, I only allowed it to be used inside my personal bathroom. Naldi did not deny that he had been informed, but said he did not remember".

also, I normally find Pavvy G annoying but he had a good take here, he said

“Ferrara, knew the spray had Clostebol in it, which he also knew many Italians had failed doping tests as a result and yet as Sinners head of anti doping, he still had the spray near him and then even offered it to Sinners physio? This whole story sounds a little far fetched tbh. “

Doesn't add up at all. But it is what it is. Maybe the sinner team is bunch of dumb rocks.

It's still a bogus story. This guy is just making it worse.
I want non nolefams to say more about this. The sinner fans are crazy attacking nole when we are talking common sense.

Let the others talk and if they are not hypocrites, they should. Let's see..

What I took away is that Berentinni hired this guy.

It seems players don't think there is anything wrong

Let's remember who Sinner's trainer/physiotherapist are now. lol

Lol
Competent bodies called to judge have believed this story, clearing the player of any accusation of intentional doping and you talk to me about making the situation worse, as if your opinion or that of other hypocrites like @nolefam_2024 counted for something in the matter.
When Sinner comes back and wins again, the satisfaction thanks to people like you and the hypocritical Serbian will be quadruple.

This is a thread that reports the first public statements of Ferrara, once again it is news with no purpose.
It is not my fault if, being Italian and living in Italy, facing Sinner, I have access to news unknown to most.

Rather than talk about how many hours Djokovic sleeps a day in one of the many useless threads opened on the hypocritical Serbian, here we make the news.

Guilty ppl typically don't understand that their denials and straight faces don't fool anyone. It just makes them look delusional.

A much smarter way to deal with this would be "We made a mistake, the courts have had their say, we wish to move on"

Ferrara took a hit for Sinner and now he wants to walk it back or blame it on someone else in order get his career back on track.

The only guilty person here is Sinner. The two were his agents.

And now one of them says he made no mistake. Further comment from Naldi would be interesting.

The meaning of hypocrisy is lost on you. However, I do understand your sentiment about Sinner's case, being an Italian who tuned in just recently. Unfortunately, here lies your inability to understand how big of a tragedy it is to have ATP #1, as well as WTA #1 both test positive in a single season.

We all know money can buy a bona fide verdict. Shame that whitewashing this will not be possible, even if "competent bodies" choose to play the part for free.

The ITIA hearing essentially exonerated Sinner on the basis that this was a case of "unknowing transdermal contamination".

Ferrara is now telling us that he knew the dangers and had no part to play in this error and, indeed, took many steps to ensure it did not happen.

Yet another conspiracy theory.
We know...ifs and buts...and yet never any evidence that can refute your theories.
Conspiracy theories are blown away by the wind.

I know very well what the word hypocrisy means, which fits perfectly to the Serbian hypocrite, someone who contests privileges while concealing total disinformation about the specific case, when he has always been someone who has wallowed in the privileges generated by the system.

Ferrara's new statements cast further doubt on the ITIA hearing and its judgement, which is what your position entirely relies upon.

I think it's clear Sinner didn't do it on purpose and the amount found on his body was completely irrelevant and did not make his performances better.

His results when "clean" also support that. Everything else doesn't matter much.

“I have suffered serious damage to my personal and professional reputation"

Well... d'uh... You bring something that you know is prohibited along with you while working with an athlete that works under strict anti-doping rules.
It shouldn't have been in your possession in the first place. It's arrogant to believe that just 'because you know', you can handle it, it's obvious you couldn't.
You were the athletic trainer, not a doctor.

"I suggested using it because he had a cut on his finger that wasn’t healing"

Big mistake No 2 and IMHO a clear display of sever misjudgement / incompetence. You claim to know that it was a risky substance, then DON"T adivce the usage to someone who you KNOW isn't trained in these matters.
There are safe alternatives and as a matter of fact, most other countries where this spray is either illegal or only available on prescription (BY A LICENCED DOCTOR) can do without. If he has an injury that doesn't heal, go to a doctor.

The sheer arrogance of this idiot costs Sinner dearly.

When can we be sure he was clean?

He spent years as the next guy, even as Alcaraz won Slams. Then the sudden breakthrough, then the news.

If he comes back and plays well enough to win Slams but not so well that he just crushes everyone, then it will look legit.

If he comes back and is trash, or dominates totally, then....

This is playing like an Italian soap opera. Best entertainment ever. Who even needs to watch tennis when you can just follow the doping dramas.

If you can add a journalist to the illegal use and discussion of war plan for country on a commercial app, including being active on Russian and other forieng country networks, with demonstrated hacks available for passwords and access for said app, accidentally exposure to a banned substance from a few people messing up isn't so far fetched, if it ever was.

Sinner is like the Atlantic reporter, taking the blame from people who should be taking the blame.

one can still admit that it is a far fetched story and true at the same time. the two are not mutually exclusive.

I don’t see any mention of biotic doubting Sinner’s performance when he comes back or mentioning Djokovic. It is absurd to me the obsession with and how much you mention both Djokovic and Sinner on this website. and that takes a lot for someone to think it’s absurd in a forum about professional tennis.

The sheer arrogance of this idiot costs Sinner dearly.
Yes, the basic facts as he recites them seem plausible and consistent with the previous accounts and findings. But Ferrara does more than state the facts -- he attempts to exculpate himself from charges of terrible judgment and/or professional incompetence, and his defense is very weak. He still ends up looking like the primary reason for the exposure.

I am referring to all those who do not believe in the good faith of the various competent bodies called to judge.
When Sinner returns, seeing these conspiracy theorists still shouting conspiracy will give me even more satisfaction in witnessing his successes.

The conspiracy theorists have about a month to fantasize, then Sinner will start to let the field speak again, or rather the law of the strongest.

What do you feel like saying about Jannik?

"Despite his 23 years, he has shown an extraordinary maturity in dealing with the situation, in my opinion supported by the correct belief of being right. He has a special work ethic and dedication, this approach leads him to continually raise the bar. Working with Jannik is rewarding and stimulating. The last time we saw each other was in Doha and we said goodbye. I suffered a lot for the end of the relationship, but I was aware that it could be one of the possible epilogues".

Looking like? He is.
- He said "I didn’t give anything to Naldi" , so how did he end up with it? Later on he said he provided proof of purchase, so it was his that ended up in Sinner.
- He said he got it prescribed to him: "I have been using it for years because it was prescribed by a specialist as a support drug for a chronic disease". This guy was supposedly a pharmacist at some point. He should know a hell of a lot better than to pass on prescription drugs to someone else.

This guy failed on many levels.

Then how did the contamination occur?
