The form he's in right now is not the form we saw last year. Unless we get another run like last year, he's screwed:

Those are:
Date
Tournament
Location
Round
Points
Drop Date

If does just one round less in Paris and Shanghai he loses:

Shanghai: 500>>>200
Paris: 125>>>75

He loses 350 points.

He will drop to around #8 position. Also, this is wishful thinking. If he is to do two rounds worse:

Shanghai: 500>>>100
Paris: 125>>>>35

He loses 490 points. He will also drop to around #8. But both Del Potro and Gilles Simon have a lot to gain at Paris and shanghai (if they are to make it) and can thus gain on Ferrer, dropping him even more.

Bottom line, Ferrer will be out of the top 5, and it's a good thing considering his performance this year.

Ferrer might not even make it to Shanghai as he's #9 in the points race as of tomorrow. If he misses that event, say bye-bye to 500 points which will drop him quite a few spots.

ferrer is not a top 5 player this year at all, he lost alot of consistency in his shots and he isnt going for as much as what he used to, dropping down will give him a chance to try to fight back again.

Yes, Ferrer needs a caliente streak as they say in his Spanish tongue. Giles Simon is only 3 points up on Ferrer, and Paris is the last tournament if I'm not mistaken.

Yes he's got a lot of points to defend. Not a good time of the year not to be performing well

He is in Federer's quarter in Paris too. He is screwed.

Ouch, in his entire career he has only taken a single set off Federer. And that was on clay.

Ferrer is 0-8 matchwise. Having lost every single set he's played against Federer in his career except 1. Though admittedly he almost won another set against Federer back in Basel 2006 when they went to 16-14 in a tie breaker.

Poor Ferrer--The biggest competitor on tour--if he had better shotmaking--he would be better than Nadal

Ferrer is a good competitor but not the biggest. I think Nadal is better than Ferrer in every area of the game. Ferrer is much closer to Robredo than he is to Nadal.

Ferrer has a superior return of serve. Nadal better in everything else I agree.

Im talking about the intensity that Ferrer plays with..To me he is unrivaled in that category..I havent seen anybody along with Nadal that bleeds for every point in the match..its incredible what those two can do

Not only that, but add to that his Aussie open performance, the best he's done in a grandslam, and he may even drop from the top 10!

He does have a lot of points to lose, but I disagree that he's "screwed" He's made a good living as a 15-25 ranked player before, and he can do it again.

He's totally the type of player who can get hot and get a foothold in the top 10, but not maintain it. I can see him having another big result and maybe getting in the top 10 again for a short time after he drops out.

He seems like the type of player who just plays and doesn't worry to much about the rest of it. If he wins, great, if not, he's disappointed, but not devastated and moves on. If he makes a Slam run and gets into the top 10, fine, if not, he just sets his sight on the next tournament.

Ferrer is one of victims slowly being taken out of top 10 by newer, younger, early 20-ish players. Maybe similar fate for guys like Blake and Nalbandian. And we maybe see guys like Roddick and Davydenko slipping out of top 10 by the middle of 2009 much like Lubjicic and Robredo in the past.....

He is NOT a bigger competitor than Nadal. Amazing, one hot season on tour makes him better than Nadal??? He was on a hot streak last year that had to come down sooner or later. If he had big shots he wouldn´t need to be so competitive in the first place. He was a poor mans Hewitt in 2007. He overachieved last year. Even he admitted in an interview that he was suprised to be even in the top 50. I agree.

It might not be long before Federer - born in 1981, is the last player in the top 10 that was before before 1986. Of course Federer will still be #1 or #2 in the world probably, he is too special to be bumped out anytime soon, but the rest of the older veterans might be washed away by all the younger emerging talent.
