Ferrer Farewell Ceremony at ASB Classic Auckland

Legend
Just saw the match with PCB and it got me pretty sad for Ferrer. This was the 14th time he had played in NZ first time being in 2003. Won the tournament 4 times, made the QF 12 times. Got a lot of love from the crowd and tournament organizers at the end. Was really unfortunate he had to retire at 1-1 because he had played amazing in the match before versus Haase. Great movement and anticipation like how Ferrer used to be.

Was at 15-0 when he got injured. Felt really sad for the guy especially how he had to retire at last year USO as well.

Tennis can be so cruel at times. He certainly deserved a much better send off and going deeper in the tournament because he was playing great. But hey, he did good and as long as he is satisfied by his career, I'll be okay. Hardest working guy on tour without a doubt. Had to take a toll on the body some day.

Wishing him all the best. Vamos!

As Ferrer said, at least he won the last point. Just goes to show you how much of a fighter he really is.

He will always be remembered as being in the shadow of Nadal, to whom he lost the FO final.
I don't know about that. I will always remember him as a polite, extremely hard working guy who probably played at the max of his potential. Nadal has nothing to do with him.

A great player with great upper body strength.

I had the pleasure of watching him play live over his tennis career a few times

He is the GOAT of Auckland

Watching him live is a pleasure indeed. I saw him multiple times myself and I was fortunate to see him play. My favorite I saw live was his second round match vs Harrison. Broken in first game of third set. Fought back and showed what grit he had. He was playing his best tennis at the time (in my opinion). Was world number 3 at the time. I mean that guy just would not give up and chase everything down. Even in his practice he gave 100%. I remember I got a chance to chat with Brad Gilbert who was also courtside that match. He was pretty impressed too and said "that's daveed for ya".

The new generation could definitely learn a thing or two about work ethic from him.
He is the GOAT of Auckland
For sure! :)

The one thing about him, he certainly gave you your money's worth. The guy is the true definition of a Workhorse and it is a loss to see him go.

@haqq777 Unfortunately we need to get used to this as a lot of these players are on their way out now, and we will be seeing this with more and more frequency until the oldest ones left are from the Raonic generation, who are about to be hitting their 30s.

I know right? I was just thinking about that in fact recently and it will be hard as a tennis fan. Depressing in fact because I just don't feel like anyone can step up to that level just yet. As a tennis fan, we also sort of get attached to players. I just haven't felt a connection with anyone in the younger generations like with these guys. I really want to pick a few young guys and root for them (and I do) but just not the same.

I understand where you are coming from. The other thing is, when you get emotionally invested in players, it is difficult to have enough left for the new guys. Of course, if they were winning more, and taking the spotlight, they can almost steal some of your emotional energy because then you see them as a significant draw. At the moment it hasn't really happened, but I think it will start to slowly happen...even if it looks like right now the future is bleak. Someone always shows up.

Yep, true. Fingers crossed and I hope someone starts playing lights out brilliant sort of tennis soon. Do you have any favorites or anyone you like in the younger guys?

Give them time, it will happen. You can be certain of it.

I am keeping my eyes on all of them at the moment, to be honest, I am actually interested in their progression. I see it like a Kentucky Derby - all the race horses are ready to run, and very soon the truly special ones will break ahead of the pack. Zverev has started off well, but I need him to start doing well in slams to really get behind him fully. I like Shapovalov, Tsitsipas is a great player for his size, Medvedev is solid, Kachanov is someone I watching all the time right now...there are going to be more. I am sure there will be.
