That must be the biggest upset since Senegal-France in 2002. Fair play to the Saudis, bar Qatar they're the very last team in this tournament who I would have thought had a result like this in them. Shows up all the dafties like me calling all the Asian teams hopeless.

The second Saudi goal was class.

Seriously can someone not explain how it happened?
Messi is overrated, missed an easy goal, the team is full of men aged well into their 30's and Saudi Arabia were motivated by the Middle eastern crowd and had the element of surprise. Argentina were incredibly sloppy after half time and never found their groove. They had all the possession as well but were ****. Embarrassing really.

Cristian Romero looked like a donkey on both goals, oh what a surprise.. guy takes a vacation with a fake injury for all of November for Spurs just to get fit for the World Cup and looks awful… the irony. **** him.

Messi is the best player I’ve ever seen with my own eyes but it’s getting extremely hard to deny now, the game has never seen a bigger fraud on the big stage

I thought the Saudis and Qataris hated each other though.

Sounds more like to make sure he stayed fit.

Messi = Federer !!!

Same old story. Messi in the National Team has always been subpar. And it’s not the coach, as he had many, all failed with him, it’s him. He’s the weakest star player fighting adversity. Total lackluster. No alternative plans, repeating inefficient patterns all over again.
Seeing what I saw, I think Argentina will be eliminated and won’t advance to play off stage.
Messi can never be compared to Maradona, it’s an insult.

Agree with this - Diego destroyed England in '86. Still the best World Cup goal I've ever seen.

I get that Messi's international record leaves a lot to be desired and he's struggled to consistently rise to the challenge when facing international teams on the big stage but I don't like how some people are completely dismissing him as a player and trivialising the rest of his insane achievements and talent because of this.

Unfortunately, he deserves all that criticism.

i was joking with the whole Fraud thing, but there are some legitimate questions about his international performances that aren’t easily answered. I do think he’s better than Ronaldo overall, but that begs the question, why doesn’t he show it in the biggest moments?

Reading the above perspective from @Sudacafan, an Argentine, brings up one of the interesting parts of the debate. In literally every other single international GOAT debate, a player’s country always stands totally United behind them; Portuguese for Ronaldo, Spanish for Nadal, Swiss for Federer, Serbia for Djokovic.

but in Argentina, his home country, that is not the case for Mr. Lionel Messi. In fact he’s widely criticized, a large number of people believe Maradona is greater and in fact actively argue against Messi. How do we explain that?

You just answered that: because Maradona is greater, and Messi has always failed in his national team.

Poland should be banned from international competition. Joyless, good-for-nothing clogging jobbers. So annoying that ****e like them qualify all the time and do nothing with it while Italy are sat at home.

Poland is a harder team to be successful with tbh.

Messi was in a strong Argentina team with Di Maria and Sergio and Higuain the later two were world class strikers in the day. That being said Messi has still done decent at international level it pales in comparison to Barca so much though.

Federer and Del Potro

They should get an automatic spot as continental champions for me, or a reserved place for historic legacy.

I don't really disagree but there's a lot crappier teams I'd take out before Poland, personally.

Definitely agree the inequity in qualifying is a joke though. Iran another one that got to play a bunch of created teams to get here.

Who is properly rated if Messi and Lewandowski are overrated?
I think people get defenders mostly right, Ramos and Pique best of their generation. Modric as well I think is getting properly rated finally.

Overrated: Cristiano (heavily), Messi (slightly less heavily), Salah, Lewandowski, Van Dijk, Gerrard, Casillas, Drogba

Underrated: Bale, Benzema, Neymar, Suarez, Kane, Henry, (peak) Hazard, Rooney, and Kaka

Hazard and Neymar didn't strike me as underrated.

Sorry for this comment spamming I have no life.

Hazard has fallen off since he left Chelsea. He was ranked high in Chelsea.

Poland aren't the worst team out there, just always so dull. Poor teams are OK if you can laugh at them or if they've got spirit, like Wales. Poland go down in the groups without a whimper practically every time. I'd rather someone different had a turn to not be any good.

Benzema maybe before last year or so.

Kane has the British behind him but his trophy count is not flattering since he stayed at Spurs but tbh prem fans can be brutal.

Very similar to many mid level European countries teams.

I don't know, I think most countries of similar stature are better value. Denmark for instance are usually well-drilled, technically sound and try to play the ball. I thought their match against Tunisia from what I saw of it was quite good despite the lack of goals. Tunisia exceeded my expectations - if France are going to succumb to the holders' curse this time around, it'll be them rather than Australia who go through with Denmark. The Aussies could be in for a bit of a horsing tonight looking at their team.

I just love when upsets like this happen. Because all these so called experts who claim half these teams shouldn't even be in the World Cup have to shut up for a couple days.
