The Argentina boss isn't covering his mouth and talking to his assistant about the weather. He's showing how relieved he is. Keeping it real. I like that.

This is the worst Mexican team / least talented group of Mexican players I can recall since the 70s. Throw a poor, badly performing manager in Martino, and it's not exactly a recipe for success.

They were a lot of fun to watch in 2014 and 2018, with an aggressive attacking style (Germany not having a clue how to deal with Mexico and Osorio's 'mad scientist' tactics in 2018 was so much fun to watch). Their current team are utterly toothless in attack - that was painfully clearly during their laboured qualifying campaign.

The fact that the Liga MX pays good money, ultimately has meant that it has provided a tempting comfort zone for many Mexican players, with not enough Mexican players getting regular (or any football) at clubs in top (or even 2nd tier) European leagues.

No matter what, Argentina beat Mexico in all prior WC’s, and in this one too.
They are an Argentina WC-friendly team, same as Nigeria.
Argentina also played like sh1t too. They may even qualify for playoffs, but they are gonna be sent home in the first match after this phase.

their potential opponents from 1/8 and 1/4 also didnt look so good too btw, i mean denmark and netherlands, so hypothetically argentina, lets imagine they take first place in the group, can beat them plus in they will forget eventually completely that anomalistic loss vs saudi and will improve in next matches, lets hope it will happen, wut could be very tough is their potential match in semifinal vs the winner of spain and brazil match

Denmark are no Mexico tho. Denmark can be aggressive, and they created problems to France which is a monster team. If Argentina meet Denmark, and they play as badly as vs Mexico, maybe not even a Messi shot will be enough to save them (fantastic and clutch shot but almost the only stuff a zombified Messi did in the match).

Argentina really need to step up their game. Urgently. Because Messi is great, but he's in undeniable decline. Vs Mexico he was slow, back-passing to no effect, not a single succesful dribble, lots of turnovers, etc. Until the goal, he was really awful. And don't forget this: when carrying a team on his shoulders, Messi is not a Maradona (and honestly has never been, not even is his prime). Reality is unpleasant but still, reality needs to be faced.

Stay of execution for Germany as Costa Rica beat Japan. It was a bit of a smash and grab job helped by some poor goalkeeping, but the Japanese didn't do enough to break down the disciplined back five and got what they deserved for their lack of urgency and imagination.
