Fils, Jodar, Musetti - Who had the worst defeat?

Just when you think, that’s it, that will be the worst defeat of the tournament, someone goes and trumps it.

Fils - Is this a revitalised Stef? Not judging by what I saw against Harris. Expect Lehecka to dispatch him. Poor defeat for Fils against a player with a clear weakness. It showed up either a lack of Tennis IQ or stubbornness either of which might hold him back.

Jodar - Bu is a talented player but the manner of the defeat showed me Jodar only has a plan A and Plan A is nowhere near good enough yet not to have a plan B.

Musetti - He either needs to employ Sinner’s trainer or he needs to get himself living in that gym in the close season and become a different athlete. There is zero excuse for the amount of times he blows up in 5 set matches. My favourite player to watch is also one of the most frustrating.

Although both are overhyped, I would say Fils was the biggest crash out, followed by Jodar.

Musetti hasn't found a great groove this year, but I thought he had a few more rounds with the draw. Injury didn't help so yeah...

There unnecessary hype around Jodar so his loss ìs not dramatic but Fils played well in Cincinnati to fail here.
Musseti total disappointment.
His body collapse is not understandable.

Fils played against a good player, and Musetti was injured (should have retired). Has to be Jodear.
Personally for me it is Fils and Musetti.

Jodar was very disappointing based on hype, although if you paid attention, it was clear he was getting tired and still needs time to develop.

Fils just had a great tournament and is constantly failing at slams. Still young, but this was very surprising based on his latest result at cincy.

Musetti has ZERO excuse. He is ALWAYS claiming injury. He always fails too.

Bu went out in R2.
..
Yeah I missed that from late last night (I’m UK based)z

Lost to promising Zheng and means Jodar getting smashed by Bu can’t be seen in any more of a positive light.

I agree he’ll definitely get much better, I was just commenting where his game is at the moment. I put him in my 5 to potentially challenge the top two in the next two years.

I’m a big fan of Musetti but the evidence is mounting up that he’s either patently not fit enough or he’s psychologically weak.

Jodar got beat down like one of Spain's bulls ran him over.
Icing on the cake would've been a ball-girl throwing a tomato at him on the way out.

I'm sure girls like this handsome guy:

Christ these two. I’m not sure which of their downturns is more severe or more terminal.
To be fair, neither of those were really showing signs of elite tennis, but 2nd round losses? That is just bad. But everyone plays the same these days so if you are not super consistent then it will happen.

Everyone on your seems to be able to hit bombs and play a good baseline game from time to time.

Never has there been more of a need to speed some of the courts up. I can’t believe how slow the U.S. open has become. You can visibly see the difference to days gone by.

Some would argue that favour the big servers too much.

I don’t agree. Most of the players return the first serve from Timbuktu these days so they could absorb that. But you can’t play a rally from that deep, so I believe there would more of an emphasis on technique and forecourt game than just brute power and athleticism.

...and yet, Moose's body keeps letting him down. He's so fragile. Must be Italian.
his heart lets Moose down more than his body, many have seen him grind away on clay and HCs like a warrior only to throw the next match like hes had enough of running around from previous battle.

Jodar is learning and like Fils both have no B game, so if their timing is out they are gone hard and fast.

Never ending tennis is annoying, night sessions are a drag designed so ATP and cronies get more ad $$$$ while Tennis and its players suffer.

Zheng could be legit too though. He was getting NIL money I think to stay in school.

Musetti has been struggling all year and many of you did not expect him to even get past Fery in R1

Jodar and Fils had sky high expectations after Fils’ big Cincy win and Jodar’s summer of ascension.

I’m a big fan of his ability but the number of physical blow outs in majors across the years is getting ridiculous now.

I think there is something unseemly going on behind the scenes. Certain countries lack the ability to protect their players from criminal elements.

I guess most of us are eager for that 3rd runner than just flashes in the pan or gatekeepers

Id like to see Jodar at the Golden Clay Swing to increase his b game

Jodar has always said that he is learning from defeats.

Well this is his first year on the full tour so it's accurate. We all know that a R1 opponent can always be tricky when you're a top 20 seed and expected to go a few rounds so if you let that go to your head or don't properly prepare, you could easily get caught offguard. I think the whole media trolling is something he will need to adapt to aswell and learn to ignore. It all started with that false flag of him allegedy pushing the ball girl (Which he didn't) and then the whole shoelaces thing. He's 19 and already people are piling unjust hate on the guy despite his pretty solid year!

I just hope he doesn't let it all get to him and he continues to improve coz there is a talented kid in there who could be a third man maybe?

Sad for me that you must not have seen "Christmas Story" and therefore missed my movie quote, and the somewhat tongue-in-cheek nature of my response.

For me it's Fils for reasons I've highlighted there, even if I'm aware of his dreadful slam record : http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/inde...making-i-really-hope-not.803487/post-19509760

Jodar's cooked physically, Musetti's been struggling for physical fitness the whole season. While disappointing, I'm not surprised for either of them that the wheels fell off at the US Open, where it's especially hot and humid.

Fils was actually very much in control of the match and has a lopsided H2H versus Tsitsipas (5-0 prior to this match) who's mostly a shadow of his former self. Fils even showboated quite a bit fairly arrogantly (what was that moonwalk about?). He acted as if it was a done deal; which for all intents and purposes and had he played decently from start to finish, it would've been and he'd be through. This is also why I don't believe in a Greek resurgence: he was being well exposed out there, even when considering the very unfavourable matchup.

But as always in Bo5, you rarely play your best level from start to finish. When it got tougher, it got out of hand really fast: he started playing into Stefanos' forehand, yelled at his clan to wake up when he's the one who should've woken up, and went out fairly meekly in the end. His attitude was dreadful throughout the match, in a way that I suspect motivated Stefanos. In his French presser, he called it "professional misconduct", so at least he's somewhat aware of how bad that was. Remains to be seen if he draws the right conclusions from this match. There are younger players who have gone further than him in Slams, and Bo5 remains a different animal.

And for my usual rant: without the (real) Davis Cup and Bo5 M1000/YEC finals, young players nowadays have far less experience than young players of the past in Bo5 format, especially in hostile environments. That's a shame really; not everyone figures out the format quickly.

EDIT: Typos.

considering the expectations, form and level of opposition it's gotta be Jodar.

The kid will be alright though, he's within grasp of a top 10 finish in his first year on tour.

Enjoyed reading that.

I don't think Jodar lets stupid people's idiotic lies about him on social media affect his life. I think he has better things to do than reading comments from miserable people venting on social media.

Lol I kept waiting for someone to say Sydney Sweeney and I was just thinking... Wow maybe ttw is growing up afterall... Totally blindsided by Sweeny Todd lol

Someone beat me to it on here but I can’t remember. It’s the first think I think when I see the guys name :D

There unnecessary hype around Jodar so his loss ìs not dramatic
Jodar is one of the fastest rising player in the rankings in history. The hype was understandable. He lost to Bu (in Bu's first ever Grand Slam victory) so bad I don't think it was an underperformance, it was definitely fatigue from running back to back deep runs in the north american swing.

Fils losing was more disappointing, Jodar's loss itself was more shocking.

I was probably in the ~5% of ppl who saw the danger in the R1 vs Tsitsipas, a great player who is far more accomplished than anyone in the thread, even if not on his best form for most of this year. And his winning form isn't THAT long ago, it's not like we're talking about a red hot player losing to Venus or Stan and then justifying it based on slam results from 10+ yrs ago.

Even so, hard to ignore the massive H2H advantage, not only the Miami 1&0 but the fact that this goes back to 2023, when Fils was a baby not on most's radar and Stef was an AO finalist & ATP Finals contender. Like, that's pretty substantial, not even factoring in Cincinnati form. While this, and arguably even Wimbledon were slightly trap draws for Fils, it's still hard to ignore "can't do it at slams" will now be a "thing" which might affect him mentally at said slams, might give early rd opponents confidence against him they otherwise might not have had, or might even affect his performance outside of slams. Especially disappointing because the bar wasn't that high - his momentum wouldn't really have been affected if he went down to Shelton R16/Alcaraz QF.

While Jodar's defeat was shocking, I don't see it affecting his narrative as a player, unless things like it continue. But his loss was certainly worse in that getting completely trashed by a LL, I mean... It was also the 1st time I've just been unimpressed with him, even in other losses he fought and it usually took something special to take him down. Going out spraying and seemingly unable to shift into any 2nd gear was definitely something to take note of, it really looked like he'd been granted a wish to be a top tennis player, and the wish expired in real-time during his R1 match and he was reduced to being a deer in headlights. But again, based on his position on tour rn I wouldn't hold it against him yet.

Didn't rate Musetti because I haven't been impressed with his form pretty much at all post-AO and had no expectations for him (even thought Fery might've pulled it off).
