Tbh the key difference here is...Rafa broke Med's serve 7 times compared to the 6 times Med broke Rafa's, and obviously the seventh time was at 5-all in the fifth when the Spaniard broke the Russian to serve out for the title a second time, which he managed to do at love.

Nadal's consistent ground game also helped a lot as the match progressed as during rallies, Rafa hit 66 winners off the ground compared to 53 by Medvedev despite the Russian clearly being the better server and returner for the majority of the 5+ hour match.

Another key difference to me is the 2nd serve pts won. Nadal leads that. And also leads the 2nd serve avg speed.
Nadal had a crappy first serving day, and the first 2 sets he didn't have a clear plan and didn't trust his offensive game, otherwise the match wouldn't go to 5 sets.

Thing is, these stats are going to be a bit misleading because in the first set Nadal looked completely outmatched but he improved as the match went on while Medvedev slightly faded, and eventually played worse especially in the important points from the 3rd set onwards.
