Nothing has gone right for me the last 18 months but in the last several weeks and especially the last 2 weeks I magically fixed my serve to a solid 4.0 level

After a 3 yr on and off struggle: I finally got my racket head to drop and that has lead to power and consistency

My second serve is still in the works but my first serve is now a solid 4.0 level
This has been a gift for me !!!

Serving like garbage to landing in solid serves has made tennis fun
I almost quit the game last month but then my racket started to drop

The key on serve is racket drop , ball toss and fluid lose arm
I don’t think the legs are very important on the serve unless you’re at a very high level .

The trophy position I find hurts my flow and hurts my serve !!!
I don’t think you should pause in the trophy position

Then again my serve is only 4.0 and not 6.0

While god has given me a workable first serve he has taken away my speed and I lost my best weapon of blazing speed

If it's magic then I hope there's video! There is video right??

For some people this is definitely the case, but not for others. There are high level coaches (Macci for one) who consider it easier to time the leg drive/racquet drop sequence when using a slight trophy pause[1], and others like Jeff Salzenstein who advocates for a continuous motion[2]. Players should experiment and use what works best for them, as neither is wrong[3].

Congrats. Hopefully it will become muscle memory and you can hold onto your improvements.

We all have to adapt our game as we get older.

I don't have the wheels I did in my teens (played grinder/counterpuncher tennis back then), so have to be more aggressive now when I get a ball to attack...

Your bigger serve will give you more attackable balls in your service games!

I'm sure you already knew about those when your serve sucked. What exactly happened to achieve this major improvement?

It is quite likely that next time you will not find the feel and go back to old habits again.

    Just warning you.

It takes a long time to fix a serve at an age such as yours.

I it took you three years to learn a racquet head drop, I think it will take 25 years, to get your foot speed back.

This is the brutal truth in tennis :(

I've lost count how many times I've walked off the court thinking I'd finally cracked something only for it to appear the very next session.

I have it in muscle memory as I played twice and new drop was there on first serve .

It is 80 percent in muscle memory and another several practice sessions should do it

What's exactly improved? Speed/spin/accuracy? Or is it something like ' it just feels better now, dont know how to explain'?

What magic giveth, magic can taketh away.

I suggest you video yourself so you can see exactly what you're doing correctly so you have something to compare to if "the magic is gone".

Unless you're the type that doesn't want to know what's in the black box.

its all about the racquet drop on the serve an on the forehand too. you can ARM the ball so much easier when you get the feel of the motion..Is it only me or do you guys also feel the racquet drop more with a heavier frame? I am now holding my racquet very very easy on the forehand - to really feel the drop and drop it to the maximum

Agree. Weight makes a difference. I get great racket drop when I add about half a kilo to the hoop.

Good job @dgold44 , give me inspiration to work on my cr*p serve.
@Curious , you will get even more drop if you add 5 kilos to the racquet handle.

I find it easier to move right hitting arm into position just slightly ahead of ball toss .
I don’t move both arms at same time
My serve was so awful I had to do what works !!!

I quit my stupid kick serve and now I just work on basic topspin slice Second

Only my forehand is a 4.5 shot

Indeed. My rule is you can only say for sure that you fixed a shot, if you manage to repeat it 3-4 sessions in a row.

I've had too many one day eureka moments (especially on my serve) only to return to garbage the next time I came onto court.

i still contend that anyone having major issues learning to serve, should just learn to serve underhand... it's a very effective serve.

I figure I have 10 good practice sessions before I wrap it up due to summer heat

. Second serve is consistent but just a weak neutral serve
