Aloha, my friends!
Today i want to share with you the racket-lovestory of my youth.
53240589904_3060aae032_b.jpg
I began playing tennis when i was 7 or 8, but seriously fell in love with this game in 1995 (i was 12 by that time) - watching all that TV provides us almost 30 years ago. And my hero was Yevgeny Kafelnikov. I even create handmade diaries, where i put all his results and my thoughts about them. When i was 16 the miracle happened and the life changed ridicously, as ive got a chance to work on a sports radio. The bosses believed in me, gave me hours on air, and still being a schoolboy, i became professional tennis commentator and columnist in Russian top media resources. Since then ive got a chance to know Kafelnikov a little bit better. From that times he became not just a tennis player for me, but a person. And i would say you: Kafelnikov-player was a way better. Yes, i stopped follow his tennis career as i used to do, but...but the one thing was unchangebale - Fischer rackets. In 1995 till 1999 i didnt have a chance to have Kafelnikovs model - it was expencive for us. But when i started to earn money by myself, i bought his model - it was red VT Pro 98, soon it was another Fischer in my hands - red and silver Pro 1. I was a happy teenager, thats a fact. And almost 20 years i stayed with that mold, that was always pretty the same in Kafelnikov case.

53240521013_d31d44d2b5_b.jpg

Now in my home collection i have unbelievable set of all Kafelnikov models that he used during his career. That is something that i never could dream about in my childhood. Plus i have his personal racket. It is a brand new stick from the very first batch of Fischer rackets made for Kafelnikov. But that is another story. And now back to my collection of all Kafelnikov retail models.
During his Fischer career (actually his full career) Yevgeny Kafelnikov used 7 Fischer models (paintjobs, cause the mold was always pretty the same):

I played the first 4 paintjobs as well. Got 5 of them every year and at the end of that year, you could bend them around your knee, because the material was so weak.
Kafelnikov was one of my heroes as well. I was friends with one of his double partners on the tour. He spoke very good about him.

Nice story, I could almost write the same (but with another player).

I liked Kafelnikov's all-court game very much, especially his backhand. The last two years in the tour, it didn't seem to me that he cared very much, he could've done a bit better, but he had an incredible career. Pity that he didn't stay in shape after his playing days though.

The rackets are very beautiful too, as always with Fischer. I have a red and grey Pro Nr1 at home and my son currently with the Pacific version.

You should have a look at the "Fischer Faction" thread!

You’ve stayed in much better shape than Kafelnikov. I understand he’s busy playing poker and golf now.

No, didnt try. Are they better than classic Fischer?

Thank you very much for such an interesting review! Will read this thread! And Kafelnikov...was a huge sports person at the end of XX century - beginning XXI century here in Russia!

Great post and collection @Kalugin, that's the type of content I'm here for! Kafelnikov was also my favourite player growing up. I got a pro 1 98 off of the bay about a decade ago to satisfy the itch, but couldn't really do much with it. Great looking racquet though :)

Thats the situation where satsfying the itch is more important than potentially winning Grand Slam))
Thank you very much!
By the way, you ve got 330 grams version or 320? Kafelnikov used 330, i prefered 320

Re the weight, I had the 320g. Didn't even know there was a 330! To be honest, I'm glad I didn't otherwise I would've bought that one and had an even worse experience, lol.

Thank you for sharing your story and photos of your excellent collection!

It’s amazing, and makes me very happy, that some special people are able to exercise their passion for sport, and even if not a professional athlete, earn a living in other ways within that sport.

Keep up the good work and keep the passion!

(P.S. I also love the classic Fischer racquets and have a large collection of them)

Thanks a lot! Before joined TT, i read a lot of you about Fischer rackets, and i have a huge respect for you as a racket lover, Fischer fan and overall tennis enthusiast. I saw photos of your Fischer collection - a lot of Twin Tec rackets, i also have several - first edition (that was used by Gustafsson), both Twin Tec Pro marble (Mid and Mid Plus, aka Steeb model). And from other Fischers i have Stichs Wimby-1997 model, Stichs 1993 and 1995 Vacuum Mid Pro, and brand new personal Kafelnikov stick from the very first batch that Fischer made for Kafelnikov. That racket came from personal collection of his coach, Lepeshin.
So, thanks once more, was very glad to read a review from you!

Fischer looked cool on Baghdatis. Too flexible, I could never.
Thats a shame that Baghdatis was the last bright Fischer frontman in ATP. After golden Era, when Fischer rackets were used by superstars like Kafelnikov, Stich, Mcenroe, Cash, Medvedev, now young generation of tennis fans highly likely never heard of this great brand

It's true unfortunately. Never quite understood why they (Fischer) never tried harder at the time. I'm sure they could've done better if they wanted. Such great rackets.

Such a great story (and collection) from a Fellow Fischer Friend! About the Pacific frames (like Pro No. 1)... I would say that they are good, but different. (Usally a bit lighter, that suits well for my aging body) This morning, as usual, Pacific Pro No 1 was my racket of choice. (Yet I did some warm-up with sweet 87' Vacuum Pro 14x18).

Well, they always had that first selection - i mean ski department. As an avid ski fan (during beautiful russian winters) i can confirm: Fischer has the most loud and huge name in cross-country skiing! It looked like they caught their wave in tennis with perfect rackets that were produced in the second half of 80s - first half of 90s. Yes, the rackets were pure masterpieces, but in reality they had only two top-players (that were trully Fischers guys, not like Mcenroe, Cash, Wilander, who just tried Fischer) - Kafelnikov and Stich. Once they were done, Fischer had found itself almost nowhere...yeah, Zvonareva, Baghdatis...but few players, even great players - is not a conveyor, that should be at this level.

Thank you so much for your attention! And thank your for some info about Pacific rackets - never used them, and after your words i understand once more time: the original product (Fischer in our case and Vacuum Pro molds) anyway will be better than something new, even if this new is more "technological"

Remember Filip Dewulf? He reached the semis at the French I think it was in 1997. He also played with the venerable Pro Nr1, and I do recall that he used the Luxilon strings which Guga used that same year when he won the French.

I came to Fischer because Mats (Wilander) used it at some point. I tried the Vacuum Plus Pro almost by accident some years later and the moment I hit my first ball with it, I knew that I wouldn't come back to anything else.

They had no money and winter sports are more important here in Austria. Also the newer yellow models were ****.

For sure! How we can forget about the man of ridiculous occasions! Dewulf had no so many highlights in his career, but those that he had - were huge! SF and QF at RG (using Vacuum Pro 98 mold, no 3 and no 4 in my collection above), beating Muster in Vienna final, and losing to Ivanisevic in 41 minutes!!! Also my favorite red VT Pro 98 was used by Ulihrach, and no 3 model from my collection was used by Marcelo Charpentier. Another model, with constant beam - Pro Classic 98, was used by a man who leads Federer in their H2H. His name is Christophe Van Garsse. So, yeah, Fischer had some players in his roster, but, still, it was not level of Head, Wilson, Babolat...and being no 4-5 in the world - its not the aim for such a giant as Fischer is. Also Fischer rackets were used by russian top players nightmare Dominik Hrbaty (who also leads Federer in their H2H) and ATP CEO Andrea Gaudenzi.

@Kalugin : do you still play with the same 330g Pro Nr1 today?
I never used 330 grams version, i loved 320 version of red and silver/red! My perfect weight for a strung racket is 346 grams. Few years ago i started having some light issues in my elbow. Top russian stringer, Victor Gromov, told me that Fischer rackets are famous for hurting elbows sometimes. I was very surprised, cause 20 years i felt perfectly with my Fischers - soft, plush feel. But after that i was trying to open maybe something new - thats how i met Head Pro Tour 630. But thats another story) But i have to say that this weekend im looking forward to give my Fischers one more chance - i was missing them)

Fischer rackets causing shoulder (or elbow) pain..? Never heard this before anywhere but I can't say for sure it's not true either... Personally, the only issues that I have ever had were with non-Fischer rackets.

The Head Pro Tour is another classic but I hope that you can give your Fischers at least one more go :)

And also Andrei Medvedev who reached the 1999 RG final playing with a Pro Classic 98 with a Volkl logo on the strings lol.
By the way one of my favs - red/silver Pro 1 - was used by another Russian guy - Andrei Stoliarov, who was in the squad when Russia won our first Davis Cup!

Yeah, thats how he said - Fischer rackets can be the cause of elbow issues. My experience was completely different...For sure, Fischer rackets are forever in my heart. For me its already a pleasure to have them at home, just look at them) But our business with Fischer rackets is not end yet)
