Pierre Paganini, the longtime fitness trainer of 17-time Grand Slam champion, spoke to Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger about the work they are doing in training before his eagerly-awaited come-back at the Hopman Cup next January. Federer has not played since the Wimbledon semifinal he lost against Milos Raonic last July.

The Swiss trainer admitted that he was not used to such a long break from playing on the tour.

“It is a little bit strange not seeing him on court and on ATP Tour. Now we are going through an interesting process characterized by an intense work. So far everything has gone as planned. We are satisfied but careful too. We don’t need to forget he has been playing for many years, and there are sgns of tiredness. In early December we will do the last block in Dubai. So far there are many positive aspects but it’s like a football match. We had been playing for 70 minutes but the match is not finished yet. Sometimes the last minutes are very important. The last five weeks of the year are the most important ones of this journey started on 27th August four weeks after the decision of shutting down the season”, said Paganini.

Paganini said that the key for Federer’s come-back is his great passion for tennis.

“He is simply unique. He doesn’t have to show anything to anybody but works every day as if he owes something to someone. I can guarantee you one thing. His passion for practice and tennis is big. How can’t a person who smiles every day before practicing have passion ? If he wasn’t willing, he wouldn’t play. He feels like he is 25”, continued Paganini.

Heh, that picture of Fed reminds me of my dad's pictures when he was young, really quite similar. :)

GOATerer as passionate as ever, in love with tennis

feck da haters, let's make this an appreciation thread guys, there are enough fighting threads around :(

ps. peak fedr for #1 in 2017, amirite?

Why not? We all get old, but feeling younger actually is a good thing. Well, Fed didn't say this but still I like it.

My mom, who is almost 70 yo, just got some Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses. She looks great. LIke a bit an older movie star.

Fed is not old. I have a problem with this society defining how you should look like or when it's time to do this or that. It is silly. So, go Fed. He is passionate.

Too many shrinks on this and other forums. As if Fed needs more money or whatever.

I'd like to see him back and play a tournament of his life.

Enjoy your life and be happy.

I agree, well said! Unfortunately what everyone is trying to say is we're going to get some trolls such at @RF-18 who thinks fed is playing as good as he's ever played, and with statements like this it only fuels his trollism.

LOL we have a whole article here where there is only praise for Federer and his committment to the sport and yall fans decide to get hooked up on one small bit where the fitness trainer says Fed feels like he is 25 instead of talking about how federer just keeps on going and keeps training to be a top dog. I thought people would be happy to hear something like that, guess not.

Breathtaking stuff.

So then all those Federer fans who claimed Federer is past his peak/prime were blatantly lying !

If Fedr is feeling 25, Nadal must be feeling like 18 ! So Djoker is beating them both at their primes while himself being like 30 or so. Right ?
Right, bang on the money :D:eek:

Good to hear that Fed is still young, eager and passionate. Wimbledon 17 here we come!

And that dense ABCD guy who takes Federer's word as gospel when he said in 2015 he was playing as well as ever.

Buy more Wilson and NIKE cause he's gonna milk that cow as long as possible and "he's going to feel 25 at43"!

Although i'd love it if Fed started in 2017 in peak fed form they're mostly statements to keep the hype up. That's not saying he won't be in great form though

The delusions of the rich. Amazing how when people get a ton of money their heads go off to la la land and delusions of grandeur take over. What planet do rich people think they are living on

Federer most definitely does not feel like 25. I read the original article and the translation ist simply wrong. Paganini says the work ethic and motivation is the same as it was with 25. He also says he has the data to compare the current physical performance to previous years. Of course he does not disclose it.

Here is the original interview with Pierre Paganini: http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/sport/tennis/als-ob-er-allen-etwas-schuldig-waere/story/15393348

"The point is that to root for Federer is to root for a Platonic ideal. It is like rooting for truth.
For a few years, he won so frequently and dependably, and with such panache, that it seemed possible that perfection could exist on a tennis court.
He wasn’t merely a favorite tennis player; he was a manifestation of superhumanity, transcendence, purity.
Detractors who said, “Don’t you get tired of him winning all the time?” were missing the point. Every victory was a validation.
No one gets bored by the sun coming up in the morning.

Sampras isn't rich anymore. He had to downgrade his homes to smaller middle class like homes just to get some money

Sampras isn't rich? He always struck me as someone who was very clever with his finances. And he also married someone with considerable wealth.

Was he downsizing for a lower profile? He doesn't seem like a showy guy, and the downsizing may have been for other non-financial reasons?

Hasnt taken a break from the tour in like 15 years, I expect very good results.

Wow, so many people are pre-butthurt that Fed is coming back to kick arse. Nadal is nursing his new hair, Novak is in la-la land and Sir Andy '3.5 hours best-of-3 match master' Murray is all that stands between Roger and the No.1 spot, the CYGS, the WTF, the WTA, the NBA and the NFL Pre-season. I say, give the man the trophies already!

Or, maybe, Joker is right now being planned and conceived !

By any reasonable measure Sampras is rich.

The guy you are responding to doesn't know anything.

He is just making up things as he goes along and as his agenda to hate dictates him.

Besides, he never knew Sampras's situation as he is not into tennis really.

Fed will come back and have a great 2017 imo. Especially on hard courts. For some reason, despite reaching 2 finals he always looks weak and vulnerable at Wimbledon vs Djokovic recently. So much running around, shanking balls, chasing, short forehands, non existent backhand apart from the occasional winner. He looks a lot stronger on hard courts, and think he has a great shot at both slams.

have fun with young girls in college,, that is what Life is all about. do this before it is too late. you only live this life once. that is what great Chinese philosopher said.

The meaning behind what he said clearly relates to Federer's passion for playing the game -- not, as people are assuming, how his body feels.
