I wanted to make a video on this topic with a Go-Pro camera to show you how I hit it but its pretty similar to this. Mine is a little more compact. So anybody thinking too much about pat the dog and stuff just should try this motion.

It gives you more power, more spin, more fluidity!! (thats important) but you will need more time to prepare - that does not mean you will lose control like he said in the video. No - you will just need to prepare a little earlier - and if you do - you will even have more control. If you will train it a lot it will become your second nature and it will feel very good. And after all we are not PRO-s and have a mostly a lot more time to prepare - so this prepare stuff doesnt relate to us so much. Try it and let me know - or if anyone is hitting like this let me know - im kinda curious. :) this is the new wave -- Medvedev, Kachanov, Tiafoe etc. - all use that elbow to accelerate.

like one user said.. i feel the same:

I love Thiem fh. I have used it a lot it has helped me as you said to add power depth and spin. But yes you have to be early if not you risk to miss hit! It is demanding physically. But once you get used to it it’s so powerful! It creates tons of leverage and acceleration. I just love it! I am 62 but his fh helps me rip the ball. I don’t know if I will be able to keep up with it as it is very demanding physically but I will use it as long as I can. If the ball comes fast at me I minimise the head pointing towards my opponent and prepare with head more up to gain time but on shorter balls or slower balls and when I have time: Boom Banga!

Key to hit heavy shots is the initial acceleration in the backswing and proper rythm on the forward swing - not arming the ball. At least not too much arming. To some extent you may get a touch more pace, but it is like negotiating with the devil to put more juice from the hand into a shot. Using arm muscles to speed up the arm will change the path and you hit the ball mostly too flat doing so.

If you have the flip-start in the take-back, you get free initial pace, even, if you don't use that much shoulder turn. Ofcourse the full power requires the body turn and pushing from the ground, but you get decent pace with even by less effort compared to unit turn and re-coil with a stiff arm.

It is still a pretty compact backswing compared to taking it way behind the back like WTA style.

Do you like that that elbow move on the backswing by Thiem? It is similar to Sampras.
