Yes.

We had the legendary charruas that won everything in the 20´s, La Grande Italia of the 1930´s , the Magic Hungary in the 50´s (Higdekuti,Kubala,Kocsis,Puskas and Czibor IN THE SAME ATTACK), the amazing Brazil of the 60´s ( Garrincha,Didi,Vava,Pele and Zagalo IN THE SAME ATTACK and then Jairzinho,Pele,Tostao,Gerson and Rivelinho).

At clubs level, the great Real Madrid, the excellent Benfica,Man Utd and Inter and, in Southamerica, Santos,Peñarol and Independiente, the traditionally three best clubs emerged from that continent.

The 80´s were also excellent, with those mighty teams from Germany and Italy, the 1982 Champagne France (Platini,Fernandez,Giresse and Tigana), the surprising Argentina led by Maradona and, of course, the 1982 Samba team (Zico,Falcao,Socrates,Cerezo,Oscar,Junior) and the second great Holland generation led by Gullit,Van Basten , Koeman and Rijkaard ( and, again, Mr Michels in the bench). They were the basis of the most dominating club of the late 80´s-early 90´s: Milan AC.

In the 90,s Figo,Paulo Sousa and Ricardo Costa gave Portugal its best ever generation, Brazil had also extremely good teams led by Romario and Ronaldo and, of course, there was the 1998 French team of Zidane,Barthez,Deschamps,Henry,Blanc,Thuram,Anelka and Desailly. We didn´t have, however, a dominating club even if Cruijff´s led Barcelona seemed the most appealing of all.

Over the last decade and a half, two teams have clearly been the best: Tiki Taka Spain and current Wunderkids Germany with Messi´s led Argentina as the major disappointment. We have also had a great club at Barcelona and the reemergence of Real Madrid,Milan,Man Utd and Bayern Munchen as well.

But none comes close to the 1970´s in the mixture of deepth and competitiveness. Also in the personality of teams expressed in their style.

At club level, the best ever Ajax ( and Feyenoord), best ever Liverpool ( and Celtic and Forest) and best ever Bayern (and Hamburg and Gladbach follen¡¡) were seen during those years. The best ever italian team, IMO, has been the 1970´s Juve, with 8 players starting also for their national team.Independiente, in Argentina, won a lot over those ten years too.

And the NASL¡¡¡

It marked the end of Pele´s reign and the begin of Maradona´s kingdom with , in the interim, the two greatest european footballers leading the way and the revolution in football with TotalVoetball or TotalFussball: yes, Sir Johan Cruyff and Sir Franz Beckenbauer.

And Riva,Mazzola,Rossi,Rivera,Deyna,Muller,Neeskens,Lato,Resenbrink,Krol,Netzer,Rummenige,Maier,Muller,Zico,Rivelinho,Carlos Alberto,Pasarella,Kempes,Best,Dalglish,Keegan..and even Bobby Moore¡¡¡

At coach level, best ever, with the likes of Herrera,Michels,Lattek.Happel;Revie,Clough,Weisweiler,Goetthals,Juan Carlos Lorenzo,Bearzot,Zebec,Paisley and Bobby Robson.

And at national level, the amazing Orange Wave in 1974-1978 and the amazing Bundesteam in 1972-1976.We can include also 1970 Brazil and the 1979 Argentina team ( including the best junior player of the world, Diego Maradona)...and if we stretch it a bit...what about the 1980 German team led by Schuster and Rummenige?

Oh my God..oh My God¡¡¡ is there any doubt, after reading those lines, that football has never been better?

60´s and 80´s were almost as good.Lets not forget Charlton,Rivera,Eusebio Mazzola,Suarez and those brazilians as well.

West Ham:

Bobby Moore
Geoff Hurst

Manchester United:

Dennis Law
George Best
Brian Kidd
Dennis Viollet
Bobby Charlton

R. Madrid

Alfredi Di Stefano
Ferenc Puskas

AC Milan

Cesare Maldini
Gianni Rivera

Ferencvaros (spelling), virtually half the Hungarian national squad from the 60's was created there.

Then we throw in Brazil, the Soviet Union and a little club some may have heard of:

Ajax

Piet Keizer
Johan Cruijff
Rinus Michels

Yeah the 60's were a good time for football.

And Benfica led by Torres,Colunna and Eusebio. They were devastating all around that period and only a team as good as Inter or Manchester could beat them.

Manchester were a little lucky to beat them, and I say this as a Red. They just didn't have this 90 minute performance in Europe that they had domestically. It has remained so to this day.

Benfica wasn´t also the same team of the early 60´s.And Manchester won 4-1 so...no excuses for the portuguese team

That said, never forget Norbert Stiles and Mike Stepney contribution.Who led Utd deffense? I guess no international did in those years.

Late 90's - Early 2000's

Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Zidane, Henry, Figo, Giggs, Khan, Beckham, Totti, Del Piero, Pirlo, Ronaldinho, Hagi, Maldini, Nesta, Carlos, Cafu, Schmeichel, Cantona, Davids, Raul, Cannavaro, Shevchenko, Bergkamp, Van Der Sar, Davids, Buffon, Gerrard, Van Nistelrooy off the top of my head

Uruguay in the 20´s and Italy in the 30´s and 40´s are the greatest pre Second World War national sides.Football began to professionalize, although through different echelons, at the begin of the 50´s with the English pros,Italian big clubs and, of course, Real Madrid ( and Barcelona too).

Germany and Holland didn´t follow until the 60´s when their modern leagues were created.France didn´t have a really pro structure until the 70´s.

The same happened in Latin America.Millonarios ( possibly the richest club at the time) may be the clearest example, but River was already a very professional club by 1950.

well, no british club has reached Liverpool late 70-early 80 level of play

Except for some inconsistent flashes late 60´s-early 70´s United.

And for a couple of years, Forest

I forgot about the great Poland ( and the very solid Czeckoslovakia and USSR ).Poland deserved to play the WC finals in 1974.It wouldn´t have surprised me if they beat the host nation in their second round clash.

oh¡ and Scottish could be impressive for a game or two.2 WC presences vs one for England.

I'd argue that the late 50's Manchester United was the absolute peak for British club football.

True, and sadly lost.Like Torino in the 1940´s after the air crash.

OTOH, while Charlton has been considered the best player to play for Man Utd, I think George Best was the most charismatic one.He was the Keegan of Old Trafford.

OTOH, I always had such a crunch on Kenny Dalglish, who was the Charlton of Anfield during their heydays

Now, Charlton and Best vs Keegan and Dalglish...make your articulated choice.Isn´t it extremely hard to choose?

While Sacchi ( and Rocco) Milan and Herrera ( and Mou) Inter are considered to be the peak of italian clubs, I think Juventus has been the real king throughtout the modern years .They had a rock solid team in the 1990´s and 2010´s and a very brilliant team in the 1980´s.

But, to me, the best team is that of the 70´s.They managed to have some of the 1980´s team brilliance and the steadiness of the 1990´s and 2010´s team. And that, with a 100% italian team, with no foreigners.

67/82;British clubs golden era. From Celtic to Villa and through Rangers,Man Utd,Aberdeen,Arsenal,Chelsea,Ipswich,Derby,Liverpool,Forest,Leeds all played or won european titles in those years.

Their managers were quite gigantic.

Curiously, by far the worse national team´s era.Scotland had the best national team in the isles.

Oh¡ Hotspurs and Everton becoming their only miserable fails.

AND NO CONTINENTALS¡¡¡ YEAH¡¡ NOT ONE SINGLE CONTINENTAL¡¡

You are asking me to choose between a Rolls and a Bentley and 2 beat up MGs.

I am too young to have watched him live but from everything I have read, and from the accounts of those who have watched him, Best could only be compared to the greatest players ever. He chose to throw it all away. Just another tragedy to add to the sentimental pull of the club.

One very intringuing question about the ideology of the FA clubs

Chelsea always took pride in their pro establishment snobbism
Liverpool always took pride in representing the working class
Arsenal and Tottenham took pride in representing the old middle class

but what about United?
Should they go through history as " the snobbish working class"?
Why that insecurity in taking a flag and shake it in front of the world much alike the Cop´s club did?

If anything United's link with it's community is stronger than that of any of the teams you chose to use as comparison. This is true even today as you see players being recruited and groomed for 1st team action with much greater success than at practically any other of the "elite" clubs.

Manchester United will always be known for the Tragedy and for the fact that they buried their dead and got on with it.

Tragedy is a Tragedy, specially when affecting young men.

But it is their blattant ambiguity what has me intringued.

Is it for commercial reasons...or simply is it their own choice?

I always felt, looking at their ( excellent and knowledegeable ) fans that they always were very envious of the " in your face" Chelsea´s snobbism or Liverpool´s Cop.

Maybe they should have been given an ideology?

When you're talking about Chelsea, you must realize they have zero relevance to the development of Manchester United. They were nothing domestically, internationally, in every sense. The important clubs United measured themselves against were always City, Leeds, Forest, West Ham, Arsenal and Liverpool (secretly Real Madrid above all I suspect though).

Spurs were also elite with Greaves...

Now, if we count on the Africans, well, the 70´s have a black hole here.It was the first time in a WC for black dominated countries such as Zaire an Haiti and they got blasted away in Federal Germany 1974

The skill of the Dutch team anno 74 and the Germans same year was awesome. 1970 Brazilian team was very godlike. Italians too.
1978 Argentina with Kempes Luque Ardiles Villa were awesome.
The Dynamo Kiev with Blochin quite good too.
Led Zeppelin were horrible though.

Robert PLant bought the Wanderers, isn´t it?

Villa meant nothing to Argentina.

Germany was better in 72 ( also good in 74 but didn´t play well because of home pressure)

Charlie George and all... George Best was in his prime and Leeds United as well. But Led Zep had already peaked in the late 60s.
70s belonged to Glam rock early on and Punkrock later on

Physical Graffiti, Houses of the Holy and Led Zep IV are all classics and were released in the 70s.

Haan was ridiculous. That goal against Zoff in 1978 seemed to defy the laws of physics. 1970s Holland is probably my favorite all time national squad.
So many great players, some of whom were criminally underrated because they ended up playing with Cruyff and Neeskens. Haan, Krol, Suurbier, Hulshoff, van Hanegem, Rensenbrink and Rep were all legends in their own right.
